Tasted by MasterWis on 1/27/2024 & rated 95 points: This is Las Cases esque. Great intensity. Superb wine. Ages beautifully (192 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 11/12/2023 & rated 92 points: A magnificent Mas de Daumas Gassac vertical from the private cellars of Allard Jakobs (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Single bottle. Light and elegant, Burgundian like the 1993, but with better maturity (even if there is vegetal note), floral and flowing, mild tannins, elegant body with enough weight, good but not great length. (1637 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 6/21/2022 & rated 91 points: Beautiful, somewhat rustic bouquet with cherries and red as well as black berries. On the palate juicy red and dark berries and cherries, herbs and spices, tobacco, minerals, chocolate and some bell pepper. Good acidity and the tannin still has a bite. Good length. (988 views)
Tasted by partymonk on 1/27/2022 & rated 94 points: fading red/purple, bit brown in color. nose- shy nose, dark fruit, pencil shaving, dried fruit. palate- rich fruit, light tannins, earthy, barnyard (998 views)
 Tasted by François1986 on 5/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Robe vermillon d'intensité moyenne -

(1463 views)
Tasted by Lype on 9/8/2020: Fresh and youthful, fully open and at peak, cassis flavours, cigar/tobacco and leafy bank features, clean, elegant and pure, beautifly balanced and harmonious, clearly one of the best vintages in the vertical, in a perfect place right now. (1434 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 9/8/2020 & rated 94 points: A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70,2%), Syrah (7,8%), Merlot (7,2%), Malbec (5,8%), Cabernet Franc (4,5%), Pinot Noir (2,1%), Tannat (1,4%) and the remaining 1% rounded out by a blend of Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo from Italy. Fermented and macerated for 20 days in stainless steel tanks, aged for 12-15 months in oak barrels ranging from new to 7 years old. 12,55% alcohol, 5,5 g/l acidity and pH 3,76. Total production 92,000 bottles and 2,000 magnums. Decanted for 3,5 hours, tasted in a Mas de Daumas Gassac 2017-1989 vertical.

Evolved, quite deep and slightly translucent blackish red with a tertiary brick-orange hue. Brooding, velvety and somewhat restrained nose with slightly sweet-toned aromas of wizened plums, some woody notes of pencil shavings, a little bit of lifted VA, light autumnal notes of damp leaves and sous-bois, a hint of smoke and a touch of ripe blackcurrant. The wine is ripe, textural and silky on the palate with a rather full body and intense flavors of fresh blackcurrants, some autumnal leaves, light sweet notes of wizened figs, a little bit of ferrous blood, a hint of gamey meat and a touch of juicy dark plum. The acidity feels moderately high, and while the tannins feel quite ample, the come across as fully resolved, contributing more to the texture than to the lightly grippy structure. The finish is rich, juicy and textural with a gentle tannic grip and lengthy flavors of ripe redcurrants, some meaty umami, a little bit of blood, light figgy tones, an oxidative hint of beef jerky and a rich touch of dried tertiary fruit.

A rich, textural and very harmonious vintage of Mas de Daumas Gassac that feels like it is on its plateau of maturity or very near to it. There's some obvious sense of ripeness that contributes to the sweeter-toned fruit flavors and silky texture to the wine, yet it never loses its sense of focus and freshness due to its quite high acidity. The tannins feel noticeably less grippy here than in any other 1990's vintage we had, but they still lend good sense of firmness to the mouthfeel. All in all, a wonderful and balanced vintage right in the middle of its drinking window. Compared to the other vintages, this doesn't seem to be that distinctive or characterful, just a perfect middle-of-the-road MdDG with some age. Drink now or in the near future. Highly recommended.  Tasted by KCC320 on 9/27/2017 & rated 92 points: Nose: very Bdx like with tobacco, a bit gamey and earthy.
Palate: smooth and matured, tobacco, herbs, gamey came later, with a bit tannic finish, very classic , reminded me of the southern France origin. Nice to drink now and can still age for a few years! (2127 views)
Tasted by tendring on 11/19/2015 & rated 88 points: Wine Education Service - Mas de Daumas Gassac (LSE): Orange rather than brown.
Mature nose, meaty and savoury.
Fruity, reasonable acid/tannin balance, good length. (3201 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/17/2015 & rated 92 points: Monthly Tuesday group #003: Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l'Hérault vertical of 16 vintages (by DJ): Beautiful and complex bouquet with dark berries, cigar box, cedar, some forest floor and barnyard impressions. On the palate a bit rustic, dark and red berries, earth, tobacco, leather, cedar, juicy acidity and round tannin. Good length. Really showed beautifully and complex tonight. Can last some more years. (4026 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 8/25/2014 & rated 90 points: Weekly tasting group #132; Mas de Daumas red 9 vintages plus some extra's. (@ DJ): The bouquet is not really expressive, but there is some mint and eucalyptus. On the palate a bit dusty, sweet spices and dark fruits like plums. Because of the fresh acidity some red fruits as well. Good acidity and tannin with a good bite. Harmonious, full bodied and round wine. Ready now, but can last until 2017+ as well. (3729 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 6/23/2014 & rated 90 points: Mas de Daumas Gassac Vertical (Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam / Bridges (*)): Much better than the '93. Black fruit on the nose. Nice balance on the palate. Very good wine. (4252 views)
Tasted by WilD on 6/7/2013 & rated 90 points: P&p, not good, flat. after some time...... Nice experience drinking a 21 yr old Daumas. Still decent acid, showing tertiar aromas and still some nice fruit. Leather, blood, iron. Still performing with some air. Great wine. (3490 views)
Tasted by lockestep on 2/8/2013 & rated 88 points: Pleasant, but not as complex as some of the earlier reviews indicated. Rim darkened but no elements of brick or brown present. Cassis the dominant note on the palate, but fairly short, Tannins take over and the finish is dry, of medium to long presence. Paired much better with beef at dinner than as a sipper afterwards. (2448 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/11/2012 & rated 91 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS #068; Mas de Daumas: Vertical of 6 vintages white and 13 vintages red. (By DJ): Beautiful bouquet with barnyard, herbs and spices, dark cherries and raspberries as well as some earthiness and bell peppers. On the palate full bodied and juicy, with cherries, spiciness, good acidity and soft, still a bit sticky tannin. The wine is fully mature and maybe at its peak now. But no real hurry. The 1992 is more exciting than the 1993. (2413 views)
Tasted by hadwin on 3/29/2012 & rated 92 points: WES - Mas de Daumas Gassac (South Hampstead High School): Deep Intensity. Very little sign of age. Perfumed, sweet with more fruity cassis showing. Soft rich and quite powerful. Long, good cassis following through on the palate and balanced. (2860 views)
Tasted by tendring on 3/29/2012 & rated 91 points: Wine Education Service - Mas de Daumas Gassac (South Hampstead High School): Orange with age.
A nose full of very sweet blackcurrant.
Fruity, soft but obvious tannins, very attractive, smooth fruity mid palate, very long. (2434 views)
Tasted by salil on 8/18/2011 & rated 87 points: Poured alongside the '89 and shows much more development with a nice scent of cedar, leather and a faint iodine element, and a palate full of polished red and dark fruited flavours. With time it fades a little as the fruit takes a step back and a balsamic/VA element emerges, but initially it's very enjoyable. (2069 views)
Tasted by french16 on 2/23/2011: Languedoc Blind Tasting (My Home): Mature Bordeaux like nose. Smoky, cedar and cassis. Developping in the glass and showing more tobacco and a hint of redcurrant. Med body at best, the finish kicks back and is long.
A light and somewhat austere version of Gassac, very good with food and still very much alive. (2590 views)
Tasted by gordoyflaca on 11/6/2010 & rated 94 points: Really good stuff; drinkable now but can also hold longer. Eating a dark fruit mash in the basement of a forest dwelling. (2120 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/23/2009 & rated 90 points: Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2009-05; Mas de Daumas: Vertical of 12 vintages (by DJ): Beautiful mature bouquet with smoky and coffee scents. Ripe red fruits. Spicy. The tannin is soft and a bit drying. (2575 views)
Tasted by JimVan on 3/25/2009 & rated 90 points: After about 30 to 45 minutes of air on the open glass, this wine blossomed. It was a lovely, herbal, black olive tinged cabernet with a medium body, cassis, olive, and integrated wood flavors, seamless, decent acidity, and long finish. Quite nice. It was a bit shaky at its opening, but gained weight and flavor with aeration. Very nice wine with dinner. (2459 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 6/20/2008 & rated 90 points: Beautiful developed and mature bouquet. In the smell as well as the taste a little barnyard. Soft and ripe tannin, but certainly not too old yet. Good bitterness. Beautiful wine. (2441 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/1/2007 & rated 87 points: Private dinner with friends. (@ PVa): Mature and rich bouquet with forest fruits. The taste is mature as well, but still juicy. Cassis. Soft, but firm bitterness. Full bodied. The wine is now at its peak (or at the end of it.) (2814 views)
Tasted by tendring on 11/23/2006 & rated 92 points: Wine Education Service - Mas de Daumas Gassac: Wnderful complex nose still showing some fruit.
Fruity, beautifully balanced, soft, very full, drinking well, excellent length. (2499 views)

Mas de Daumas Gassac

Producer Website

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)

What wine wine with no appellation is being considered by the expert and wine connaisseurs as «The only Grand Cru of the Midi» (Hugh Johnson), «A Lafite in Languedoc» (Gault & Millau); « One of the 10 best wines in the world» (Michael Broadbent) or simply «Exceptional» (Robert Parker)?

Within 40 years the Mas de Daumas Gassac wines have reached the rare status of «cult wine» that is only given to a limited number of exceptional estates in the world.

The estate has been farmed in the traditional and natural way for hundreds of years before the Guibert family established the Grand Crus vineyard of the Gassac valley. The terroir and microclimate of Mas de Daumas Gassac was rediscovered in 1971 by Henri Enjalbert, Professor of Geology at Bordeaux University. He considered the Gassac valley to be “the ideal and unique terroir to produce a Grand Cru wine.” The estate benefits from a rare and still unexplained red, powder-fine glacial soil strikingly similar to that of the best parts of Burgundy and a cool microclimate derived from the Gassac river, several natural springs, and the influence of the nearby mountains and sea. These characteristics are extremely rare in the South of France.

Divided into 63 small vineyard plots among 3.000 hectares of protected forest cultivated without any chemicals or pesticides, Mas de Daumas Gassac remains a virgin land farmed with total respect of mother Nature to preserve its balance.

With the specific soil of the Gassac valley, a very cool microclimate, dozens of different grape varieties and winemaking, ageing «savoir-faire» inspired by the great Emile Peynaud, the wines form Mas de Daumas Gassac are incomparable to any other and have established a style of their own. There are few wineries on earth that one can point to as being responsible for creating revolutions, let alone in one in a country with as esteemed a wine tradition as France. Yet this is precisely what Mas de Daumas Gassac has done for the past forty years!

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
