Community Tasting Notes (average 88.7 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 332 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by djs on 3/10/2024 flawed bottle: OTH. Oxidized. (284 views)
Tasted by Gary on 1/15/2023 & rated 91 points: Outstanding. Very much alive: tannins well integrated , fruit very present. Roses, tar. Traditional old school Barolo (1072 views)
Tasted by Thek on 2/19/2022 & rated 88 points: pnp from coravin.

Rusty amber color, moderate bricking, lots of sediment. Aromatic nose of sweet caramel, apple, wet leather, hints of eucalyptus. Medium-full bodied palate, some sweetness on the front, most of the fruit profile is gone other than some red apple. leather, acidity on the front turns into bitterness in the mid-palate. tannins have a dusty texture but are mouth-coating.

Bottle is in good condition (bought in La Morra) but as others have said this is drinkable but not great. (1544 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 8/25/2021: Potable but definitely OTH. (1930 views)
Tasted by RightBankKane on 2/27/2021: Orange hue to the color. Mintyness among the roses and saddle in the bouquet. Fine on the palate with some brown sugar sweetness and otherwise very leathery with a slight medicinal bite. Good acidity, fine tannins support the finish. Fully mature. Good drinking. (2199 views)
Tasted by LCHammer on 1/9/2021: Shot - waited too long. No rating (2136 views)
Tasted by Squirreljam on 6/7/2020: Really good, this may be the bargain of 01 Barolo, iirc it was under $30 on release. Drinking super well, tannins resolved but (this bottle) still had primary energy, though earth and loam were a little more than a few years ago; lapsang souchong tea still there (apparently that was in a note of mine from 07😆). Juicy and fresh while soft at the same time. In a good place; drink or hold depending on your aging preferences...

Edit - these were $23 in 05!! and it was earl grey in 07 but I stand by lapsang souchong now (2156 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 5/26/2020 & rated 88 points: Solid, though somewhat basic, classically styled Barolo. Still young for my preference. (1768 views)
Tasted by Badfish on 10/18/2019: Solid little wine that is great with food if a bit foursquare overall. Definite bricking throughout with a dark ruby core. The aromas are earthy and bright with notes of red berries, tar, smoked meat, and licorice. The palate is lean and expressive with crunchy red fruit, floral complications, and approachable tannins. Definitely could use more density but this is a good value if you like the style. (2300 views)
Tasted by cabinbor on 3/25/2019 & rated 85 points: past its prime (2272 views)
Tasted by efeldhake@yahoo.com on 2/27/2019 & rated 92 points: Dark garnet in color with slight bricking edge. Nose of plums and espresso. Tastes of cherries, plums, tobacco, and hint of shiitake mushrooms. Resolved tannins, lovely fruit, and in a good drinking window. Drink over the ext 5 to 7 years. (2076 views)
Tasted by xtype on 8/10/2018 & rated 89 points: This was much better after decanting, even better the second day. Opened up to reveal lots of fruit, cherris, leathery finish. (2549 views)
Tasted by mikemboutiquewines on 1/30/2018 flawed bottle: Completely oxidized! Couldn't even look at it, never mind drink it. Maybe I will finally learn to NEVER buy wine retail from a store that you don't know or trust implicitly!! (2989 views)
Tasted by rojoloco on 11/11/2017: missing (2695 views)
Tasted by Montecalvo on 9/29/2017 & rated 90 points: Initially had some off odors but these resolved with decanting. The wine is medium aged and hitting it's apex of fruit vs maturity. No signs of being too old. (2760 views)
Tasted by chitowncdpguy on 7/26/2017: Needed about half an hour of air to start tasting good. Fruity which was kind of surprising to me, a little bit floral with some black pepper too. It was a little flabby I thought but otherwise pretty nice. (3056 views)
Tasted by egaible on 7/20/2017 & rated 89 points: Showing a little flaccidity at this point, but not horrid. Fruit still present and tannins softened as appropriate, a bit too much taste of alcohol (2487 views)
Tasted by doggman on 3/18/2017 flawed bottle: Tightest cork I ever pulled. But, completely oxidized. Too old? Bummer! (2607 views)
Tasted by Grapeman75 on 2/12/2017 & rated 89 points: A good simple Barolo, needs a decant of at least an hour, will show better. Color light garnet with orange. Medium bodied dusty exotic spices and red fruit. Tannins push back against palette but not worth aging further. Enjoyed w Brussel sprout pancetta and rosemary penne. (2551 views)
Tasted by bordeauxman777 on 11/27/2016 & rated 92 points: Fully mature now, but will drink for many years to come. After 20 minutes the bottle blossomed. Charming nose showed notes of roast meat, white flowers and mature dark berry, this is wonderful balanced wine of a great elegance and Nebbiolo character. (2536 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 9/7/2016 & rated 91 points: mature color. roses and red berries. mid touch plush with cherry and strong structure. tannins rather rustic. this showed good nebb. character to me and was very good with food but lacked the fruit and pleasure component to take it further. (2884 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 8/27/2016: At Marta. More tannic and fruited than expected. Rather good if not classically styled. Not surprising, best with the pizza funghi. (2645 views)
Tasted by MS92 on 5/8/2016: Sadly, past its prime. It was perfect for a Barolo marinade and reduction for a leg of lamb. (3059 views)
Tasted by duchamp on 2/8/2016 & rated 86 points: Light ruby with slight bricking, very sherry like and oxidized nose with hints mushroom and plum, tasteless palate with hints of red and black berry fruit, picks up a little on the finish with bright red fruit, earth, spice and juicy acidity

Note: borderline "flawed" (3322 views)
Tasted by aChave on 11/13/2015 & rated 90 points: Opened slowly; should have been decanted well ahead. Nice fruit aromas with hints of violets & lavender, lighter and more delicate at the finish. Well integrated and attractive. Consistent with previous. Enjoyable Barolo. Does need some decanter time to flesh out. (3432 views)

Damilano

Producer Website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

The origins of the Damilano farming company date back to over a century ago, when Giuseppe Borgogno, the great-grandfather of the current owners, started to grow and make wine from his own grapes. This tradition was kept up by Giacomo Damilano, the founder's son-in-law, together with his children until it passed on to his four grandchildren: Guido, Margherita, Paolo and Mario, who very attentively manage their forefathers' land today. The wines produced are renowned for their upright style and the estate is widely appreciated thanks to the strictness and passion that accompany all of the company's activities.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
