Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Sotto325 on 12/24/2023 & rated 89 points: Well, the note 3 years ago came to mind: Acker provenance. This can be a perfectly blended Hermitage of soft tones yet full forest complexity and sinew. This bottle was not corked but rather tired and tasting of poor storage. (318 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 8/4/2022 & rated 93 points: A wonderfully poignant Hermitage, displaying the essence of Northern Rhône structure and elegance and the rich base of briary, mildly velvet dark purple/red tones. Lots of moist earth, some black pepper, and lots of dark red fruit and old vine flavors. Nice acid balance and not displaying the Parker-like 2007 vintage fruit forwardness or alcohol. (1173 views)
Tasted by Julie Lampe on 1/31/2021: Medium to deep garnet in color, visible sediment, thick slow legs.

Aromas of petrol, earth, spice, aged Parmesan, brown sugar bacon, and a little honey at the very end of the bouquet.

Meaty and beefy with smokiness on the palette with a little menthol on the finish.

Very smooth, soft tannins. Just a really, really beautiful and complex wine. I was so lucky to get a gift certificate and get this bottle! One of the best I’ve ever had and I’ll never forget it! (2083 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 10/11/2020: I love Hermitage and could not wait to open the first of these four bottles. Chapoutier really captures elegance, terroir, and sophistication that makes the feminine side of Hermitage the Queen of the Rhône. I am hoping it is not Acker provenance and rather youth.A wonderful color approaching Garnet/black red cherry skin with elegance but not fruit. The flavors are muted, the acid,– – even beyond tannins-- overwhelms the warmth that should be evident. Let us hope this is time and nothing more.

2nd half of Coravin'd bottle:Two weeks later, a very nice showing. Deep purple fruit, elegance of Hermitage dark red fruit much more delineation of Syrah typicality. But not yet the force of nature that great Hermitage can be. I suggest 2 years. (2250 views)
Tasted by LARich on 7/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Spectacular and elegant. Rich and wan full-bodied Syrah that’s just now showing it’s greatness. Give it a few more years or enjoy now (2245 views)
Tasted by Hazeo on 12/27/2018: A very smooth and elegant Syrah, which from ones I've had for northern Rhone are generally dense and very meaty, but this bottle manages quite supple and subtle. However, it felt a little tart, thin and perhaps a hint of stewed on the finish, and overall light to medium bodied which runs against previous comments of the wine being 'masculine'. This bottle was stored in a fridge that broke during a heatwave so I can't rule out that the heat had altered it's development. 87 as tasted. (2577 views)
Tasted by Cooky474 on 8/9/2018 & rated 92 points: Drunk at 67PM alongside an '06 Ermitage Pavillon which was an interesting way to drink them.

The Le Meal was a more masculine rendition of Syrah, with an abundance of black fruits and a touch of beef and leather. Silky tannins and good finish. Very well made wine and all too drinkable even if it has much more potential.

Split decision in the end as to which was the better wine, although the consensus was that this one needed more time to hit its peak than the Pavillon... (2196 views)
Tasted by PC73 on 2/1/2016: sweet, pretty on the nose.
sort of approachable.
relative highlight against many of the other 2006/07s (2441 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 4/10/2015 & rated 86 points: S&E Wine Club - Blind Northern Rhone/Syrah Tasting Dinner (Our home): Clinical clean nose. Light tannins 5.5/10 with tobacco on the nose too. A light refined finish. Clearly French. (2676 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 4/10/2015 & rated 90 points: S&E Wine Society - Northern Rhone Style (S&E): hospital smell in nose, so so on the tannins (2743 views)
Tasted by dchain on 8/28/2014 & rated 93 points: Thought it was the white when pulled the bottle but it was the red! Almost identical packaging! Very glossy red, nose of finest Syrah, blackberry, touch of beef and leather, complex Rhone spice with some clove and five spice. Had it chilled and think it benefited the wine immensely, lovely rounded mouthful of primary fruit, lots of glycerin and body. Impressive wine making with lovely length and balance. Thanks to AWC for the gift of the bottle after yum cha last year when we didn't finish it! A wonderful surprise and I would recommend it if you can pick it up sub-$100 at auction or from a good merchant as there is no one chasing these wines! (2232 views)
Tasted by ihavezinned on 2/18/2012 & rated 93 points: tasted at the napacabs.com Chapoutier Hermitage Tasting held at Pizziaoli's Restaurant in Chino, CA.
on the nose ripe red fruit and smoke. on the palate lots of blackberry, with big tannins. (3375 views)
Tasted by Biggsy on 11/6/2010 & rated 93 points: Dark ruby with a jammy, red fruit laden nose, a little hint of graphite and cooked meat. Full with grippy tannins and blackberry jam flavours. Although the fruit is sweet and jammy, there is great freshness from the tannins and minerality. (2576 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
