Community Tasting Notes (average 94.4 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BHRH on 1/4/2023 & rated 90 points: Decanted one hour - fair amount of fine sediment. Good color - a bit bricky. Earthy and cassis with some vegetal/bell pepper on the nose. Medium-bodied, well integrated, complex, but that vegetal aspect continued as the wine unfolded, and was somewhat distracting. Old school style with hints of eucalyptus on the plush finish. Still an intriguing wine that was stored well but appears to be slightly on the downside. (392 views)
Tasted by seijaro on 7/12/2020 & rated 92 points: That's she 90 "old and moldy" and me 94 "fully mature, smooth as silk, plums and cranberries." I have to admit it is pretty much done, although I find these oldies interesting and fun to drink. If you still have any, drink it up. (1138 views)
Tasted by Bluethunder on 11/28/2017 & rated 96 points: 27 year old perfection. Dark purple color, tartrate crystals on cork (Wine diamonds), medium body with smooth finish. Dark sweet fruit, some spice and leather. Outstanding well balanced wine that continued to elvove through the night. Glad I have one more bottle! (1919 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/12/2017: Quite lovely, with plenty of gas still in the tank. Medium-bodied, red-fruited, and distinctly earthy (first) and fruited (second). Aromas continued to develop throughout the night, moving from mineral/soil to red currants some two hours in. The body is medium, the tannins, very fine, and resolved; still good structure here, should last another 7-10 years if well-cellared. Really pretty eucalyptus and herb notes distinguish this beauty. Cork and fill in exc. condition. Very much in an old-school style; loved it. highly recommended

double-decanted 2 hours prior to service, but in retrospect, I could have/should have decanted this for ~ 3 hours, then returned to bottle; delicate, but not fragile. (2605 views)
Tasted by drmarc61 on 7/6/2015 & rated 96 points: my last bottle of Seavey's first vintage. Remarkably well integrated bottle of wine. Anybody who says that he Napa cab cannot age gracefully needs to drink a wine like this… (2633 views)
Tasted by drmarc61 on 7/6/2015 & rated 96 points: my last bottle of this remarkable wine. Anybody who does not think that the Napa Cabernet can age well needs to drink one of these… (3141 views)
Tasted by wythes on 1/12/2015 & rated 94 points: Drank from a magnum. PnP'ed which was a mistake (you'd think I would have learned by now). Should have decanted for about an hour. The wine was closed at first but really opened up with some time.

Not much to say other than this was a really great wine. 24 years in a larger format has done this wine well. Classic Napa cab characteristics.

Everyone at the table was asking "so who is Seavey?". Now they know. (2352 views)
Tasted by AtoZ on 6/21/2014 & rated 93 points: Atrong celery salt component. Great with steak. No danger of going oth. (2303 views)
Tasted by Curt11 on 1/10/2014 & rated 96 points: The most intriguing Cali Cab I've ever had, even if only for the fact that it's the oldest I've tried. It's aged extremely well (note that this was purchased at the winery and presumably stored in an ideal cellar). Not as brick red as you might expect- the edges were a lighter crimson in color. Bordeaux-esque nose. Earthy but plenty of red fruit. The most remarkable part of this wine (for my palate) was how much tannin remained. I never understand the "round tannin" description, but the tannin here seemed smooth and integrated. Loved this! I don't know why you would hold this any longer... it's delicious today! (2586 views)
Tasted by Tel007 on 12/6/2013: Fantastic wine. Still quite youthful considering it's already over 20 years old! (2012 views)
Tasted by webbaker on 11/22/2013 & rated 95 points: Into the decanter at 7:20 am. Cork was slightly dry rotted at the top and broke in half, but otherwise appeared to have a good seal. Moderate amount of medium to large sediment. Initial aroma very closed. Began tasting around 5:30 pm. A slight bit rusty around the edge. Definitely an old boy wine, notes of dried leather, but not the slightest bit tawny. It has the (light) fruit intensity you'd expect from Seavey, but really nice balance between aromatics and the fruit. Tannins have not fully dropped away, could easily stay in the cellar longer. One of the most enjoyable "old" wines I've had in a while; I definitely prefer a younger, fruitier style, but this is quite excellent. No signs of quitting at age 23. (1909 views)
Tasted by drmarc61 on 9/28/2013 & rated 96 points: OMG! Who said Cal. Cab.s can't age.... Remarkable nose with alcohol that still needed some time to dissipate. This wine still had at least a decade left before it might be past it's prime. I am a BIG fan of Seavey wines. These wines stand up to the test of time. (1916 views)
Tasted by Old Vino on 12/12/2012 & rated 95 points: Very well aged California Cab. Killer nose - sweet berries, not a bit of oak at this age. Finish medium plus. Wish we had more. This could go on for a decade more. (1838 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 7/23/2011 & rated 87 points: Medium red, garnet-edged color. Aromas of cherry pie, tar, cigar box, sherry (!). Medium tannin, low acidity. Flavors echo the nose precisely and unfortunately indicate some bottle damage; previous bottles had shown as youthful, brisk, powerful (model) Napa cabernet sauvignon. But here, the small dimension of sherried aroma and flavor are troubling. Bottle #5 of six. (2120 views)
Tasted by ggkemp on 7/17/2011 & rated 97 points: Wow with youth. Drank with epicurean group. Alll loved it.. (2055 views)
Tasted by DJPremierCru on 1/28/2011 & rated 95 points: Excellent wine, but difficult to rate because I am, becoming so accustomed to the "modern" wine style. To me, this was a very classic style wine that one rarely sees these days. The tannins were soft and the body med - full. It has aged very gracefully. I drank it 11 months ago and can still "taste" it. Very special. No Decanting was necessary. (1872 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 7/4/2010 & rated 97 points: Very dark red. Ripe nose of black currants, plum, tar, hickory, black pepper. This is the model for Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon, to my taste. Beautifully built, both sturdy and in mid-life in perfect balance, having powerful flavors of ripe fruits, a touch of oak, and a tremendously satisfying finish. I call this "old California style", in that it's suffering NONE of the modern popular excesses of high alcohol, over-ripeness, or post-harvest re-concentration steps. Bottle #4 of six. Wish I had cases of this. (2123 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 7/18/2007 & rated 95 points: DEEP BLACK FRUITS IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR, BLACKBERRIES, BLACK CHERRIES AND CURRANTS. NICE COMPPLEXITY, STILL HAS PLENTY OF TIME. LONG FINISH. (528 views)
Tasted by jeffbramwell on 6/24/2007 & rated 95 points: Very youthful color with a minimum of bricking at the rim. Complex nose of cinnamon, raspberries, cherries, licorice and a touch of earth. On the palate, this wine is all about elegance. Very refined with perfectly integrated oak. Baked pie crust on the lingering finish. Soft tannins are still present, with refreshing, balanced acidity. Decanted two hours in advance, consumed over the following three hours. This wine has a long life ahead of it. (2368 views)
Tasted by bdenuyl on 9/30/2006 & rated 94 points: Excellent cab, consistent with the other Seavey’s. Big and rich in the old Cabernet styling with excellent balance. Not as good as the ’97, but excellent. May want to buy another bottle of two if the price is right. (1515 views)
Tasted by assaf on 3/2/2003 & rated 95 points: Dark dark purple, almost black. An inviting nose of dark fruit and ceder. On the palate, full bodied and chewy but very smooth and impeccably balanced with dark fruit, ceder, and sweet tannins. Extremely long finish. An amazing wine. Berg and I found this bottle at a liquidation sale for $7. (1966 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
