Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rmcnees on 11/6/2020 & rated 91 points: Fortunately, tonight's tasting experience was far better than back in 2014 when I wrote, "This was medium bodied, dark ruby colored, it comes off a bit 'hot' initially and shows bright vibrant sweet, dusty, complex ripe cherry notes with a slightly firm backbone and layer of slightly earthy, red and black berry, with hints of smoke, cedar and anise on a short slightly edgy tannin finish." At that time I gave it 88 points.

Tonight, this was very pleasant and showed none of the adverse conditions reported earlier. It was dark garnet colored, medium bodied and was consistent with the tasting profile from earlier. It improved as the evening progressed revealing more depth, complexity, supple roundness and smooth elegance with hints of sweet mocha. Clearly this wine needed a dozen or more years to settle, integrate and balance to reveal its true potential. I don't believe the improvement or change was due to bottle variation, rather, credit the graceful cellar aging of the vintage release. Tonight, I give this 91 points. Regretably, this is our last bottle of this label and likely the end of the line for this brand as all indications are it no longer exists.

Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 11/27/2011 & rated 93 points: Opaque red violet color; plush berry, mulberry, dark chocolate nose; tasty, plush, balanced, tart berry, tart black fruit palate; medium-plus finish (980 views)
Tasted by pcarpe41 on 9/20/2011: Solid garnet. Sweet cassis, chocolate cherry, some slight vanilla oak. Completely consistent palate with a touch of gravel and acid. Velvety tannin and structure. Love these wines... (3478 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/14/2011 & rated 92 points: Sous Vide BBQ at the Beerlings' (Chez Tim and Sharon, San Francisco, CA): Dark red violet color; ripe cassis, menthol, red berry nose; tasty, plush, youthful, poised, ripe cassis, red berry, menthol palate; medium-plus finish (2355 views)
Tasted by BonnieM on 8/13/2010: Some tannic overlay at the outset. Lots of ripe dark fruit. This was a very nice foil to the grilled steak. We might have opened this a tad early. If I had one more bottle I would hold it for another year. (4035 views)
Tasted by cns on 2/28/2010 & rated 87 points: Basic califonia Cab. Thankfully restrained on the oak, tannins are still a bit high -- wait if you can. Modest fruit. So-so. Although, for $36, one can find better wines. (3776 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 10/25/2009 & rated 89 points: Good solid cab. may need a bit more time to achieve better balance (2739 views)
Tasted by CBurbank on 8/23/2009 & rated 90 points: Cassis, mocha with a nice herbal note. Nice texture to the wine. Certainly a lot of oak, but well integrated. Excellent with steak. (2610 views)
Tasted by cns on 5/25/2009 & rated 87 points: Way too much oak on this wine for my taste. (2507 views)
Tasted by karpos on 4/4/2009 & rated 90 points: Drank at a brazilian bbq place. Great with the food. Good fruit, acid balance. I was quite impressed. Glad I have more and excited to try the higher end stuff from Erich. (2667 views)
Tasted by moonmanvegas on 2/22/2009 & rated 91 points: When I first opened this bottle wow it knocked me on my ass... What a fruit bomb, Big chocolate to start that mellowed into fruit. The color is black ink very dark wine. Nose of big black cherry, Vanilla, heavy oak, light blueberry, cola, and heavy concentrate of fruit.

This wine is a little hot from the alcohol and has big ripe tannins. This is over the top cab from California. The finish is medium. This is a big new world wine that could use just a little more time to mellow out drink now through 2015. (2642 views)
Tasted by skm95t on 2/6/2009 & rated 88 points: This wine still needs 30 minutes to an hour of decanting to really open up and give its all. This wine features red fruits including raspberries and bright cherries that give it a little tartness. Tart fruit and carmelized sugar on the palate is supported by integrated fine tannins. A solid everyday red, and I would drink this by 2011. (2826 views)
Tasted by collin on 11/16/2008: Chocolate and cassis, with a slight herbal note. Very bright on the palate, especially in the middle. The whole thing is somewhat lifted and somewhat harsh. I think this needs some time to settle down (1-3 years?). (2836 views)
Tasted by skm95t on 9/6/2008 & rated 88 points: Nice full bodied red, got better with a little air in the glass, red fruit notes, molasses, nice vanilla tones, easy to drink with a nice steak, might improve a little with time (2711 views)
Tasted by assaf on 9/5/2008 & rated 92 points: No tasting note taken, but was very good. (2915 views)
Tasted by Tubbs on 8/3/2008: wait 5 years (2882 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
