Tasted by klezman on 4/11/2020: Wow, fresh as a daisy! Earthy purple fruit, ample acidity, and just a lovely texture. Turley's winemaking and style also sing when the alcohols are lower, like in this 13.9% bottle. (2001 views)
Tasted by VU83 on 3/7/2015 & rated 85 points: Still plenty of structure, despite CT drinkability window. But an uninteresting wine at this price point. (2228 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 10/27/2014 & rated 88 points: dark ruby, in color. blueberry, cherry, earth, on the nose. oak, vanilla, spice, blackberry, cherry, espresso, chocolate, on the palate. high acid, medium tannins, on the finish. (2138 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 3/12/2010 & rated 88 points: Black raspberry fruit, ample tannins, fruit still very tight, harsh, woody flavors, short finish, good structure and texture (3721 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 1/9/2010 & rated 86 points: Perhaps it needed to open more but tasted a bit off from what I expected.... (3645 views)
Tasted by ProfessorHTF on 5/31/2009 & rated 88 points: Hmmmm, another winning charbono from Turley, perhaps a tad too early. Took some time to open up, but there was that trademark candied bing cherries, some smoke and leather, a touch of grilled meat. Fabulous. Not as stellar as the 2001 blockbuster, but a massively enjoyable wine nonetheless. (3188 views)
Tasted by ProfessorHTF on 3/12/2009 & rated 88 points: Wine was sacrificed during an impromptu dinner that just sort of occurred. I was eager to open this, having had an awful experience with it previously. Mixed reviews among tasters; Kenneth seemed unimpressed. Chris seemed quite impressed and revealed it as a closet favorite. Neither provided notes, so allow me. Nose began quite hot, as Kenneth observed, but over time evolved into a rich spicy blackberry explosion. Fantastic. Blackberries, concord grapes, and lots of spice on the palate...nice long finish. This was a "low alcohol" wine for Turley at 13.9%. I found it excellent, and will seek out again despite its alleged rarity. My guess is this is literally as good as charbono is capable of being.  Tasted by buckeye76 on 5/30/2008 & rated 90 points: JAMMY FRUIT WITH MINT AND HERBAL NOTES IN THE NOSE. BLACKBERRIES AND BLACK CHERRIES IN THE FLAVOR. MEDIUM LENGTH FINISH. (240 views)
Tasted by MarkDaSpark on 5/23/2008 & rated 89 points: First Charbono and first Turley. Nice Deep dark purple color. Good nose. Berries. Seems more than the 13.9% alcohol on the nose and tongue. Opened nicely after 3 hours decanting. Will save remainder for another night. (3036 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 11/11/2007 & rated 90 points: delish (2202 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 8/5/2007 & rated 90 points: Like a petite syrah, black purple color, medium flavors of plum and blueberry, with a touch of oak, medium finish. Actually, this wine had great balance and was delicious to drink all night long. It seems like this can age another 5-10 years with no problem, but it is tasty now. A fine mid-range Turley. (2234 views)
Tasted by LC17SMP on 2/16/2007 & rated 85 points: It seemed that this wine was almost great all night. The nose was good and there is nice fruit but it shows way too much acid for me. Maybe I should have tried it with Italian food. (2660 views)
Tasted by madeiradog on 2/4/2007: My first charbono - and not too impressed. It has a deep purple color but no depth of fruit and no finish. Slightly alcoholic nose as well. Maybe it was slightly corked??? If not corked, I would rate this wine 82. (2512 views)
Tasted by MarkC on 9/3/2006 & rated 85 points: Intensely purple in the glass, bordering on blue. Nose was surprisingly hot (alcohol is 13.9%), but also showed coffee and blue fruits. On the palate the attack was great - lots of boysenberry and purple fruit. The mid-palate was a bit bland, and the finish was lacking in fruit. Good structure, but I doubt the fruit will ever come into balance. All this said, it was a good food wine - went well with cheddar/BBQ and blue cheese/onion burgers. (2758 views)
Tasted by decaturwinedude on 1/1/2006 & rated 87 points: My first Turley Charbono and I'm not exactly going to run crazy to track down more. I found this to be rather grapey and one dimensional. Slight aromas of earth and blueberries are followed by an uninspiring palate and a seriously dry finish. There really isn't much to talk about here. Everything appears to be in place, the wine is smooth and drinkable, but there is little worth talking about.
Didn't change much with air time. Reminds me of a lightweight CdR. If this cost $10, I wouldn't complain. But, at $25-$30...yikes! (3035 views)

Charbono

Varietal character (Appellation America)

From Wikipedia:

"Charbono is a grape variety found in California. It is not very common in California, but is the second most commonly grown variety in Argentina, where it is known as Bonarda (which is not the same as the Bonarda Piemontese varietal). The wine made from charbono tends to be dark, with medium to high tannins and acidity.

After genetic testing conducted by Carole Meredith, it was determined to be the same grape as the grape known as Corbeau, Douce Noire, or Charbonneau in the Savoie region of France; but in spite of repeated references, it is probably not related to Dolcetto of the Piedmont. Both varieties produce prodigious quantities of large clusters of very dark grapes, but Dolcetto ripens early and produces light, fruity wines with limited aging potential. Charbono ripens quite late and produces wines of great substance, with significant aging potential. It is likely that this confusion arose because an Italian synonym for Dolcetto is "Dulce Nero" which translates to "sweet black," as does the french name "Douce Noir" for Charbono."

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
