Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 67 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by winetastingnote on 3/30/2017 & rated 94 points: At its absolute peak. Cherry dominates the nose, with secondary notes of candied rhubarb, strawberry, earth, and a hint of root vegetable. Long finish, complex yet surprisingly accessible. Don't wait on this one. (1989 views)
Tasted by leachriscellar on 9/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Cranberry jam and garnet color, dark cherry, plum, & currant on the nose. Chocolate was there at opening but has faded a little. Wet stone, plum, cherry and mulberry flavors. Still packs a punch (2994 views)
Tasted by li2s2dbw on 8/18/2015 & rated 92 points: Solid Pinot all around. Ready to drink now, am not sure it can improve any more than it has. (3089 views)
Tasted by DNABog on 5/16/2015 & rated 92 points: Still drinking well! Plenty of strawberry fruit. Love the Keefer characters in this wine. (3188 views)
Tasted by Fraleigh on 1/10/2015 & rated 94 points: Drank very smooth, no decant needed although it did soften a bit with time. Big fruit, raspberry and some blackberry flavors. Any bottles should be drank now (3281 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 10/8/2014 & rated 91 points: Ditto my prior tasting notes. (2151 views)
Tasted by JPH104 on 10/3/2014: Big nose. Rich, smooth and spicy. Drinking very well. (1106 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 9/7/2014 & rated 91 points: Not as youthful or tasty as the last bottle I had in 2013. (1186 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 5/12/2014 & rated 90 points: Number 5 time for drinking this wine. It still has a ruby color, with reddish characteristics; yellowish-orange on the rim. Cherry, strawberry, herbs, spice and oak aromas with a hint of very light molasses. A little more mature and soft in the mouth. An elegant and fairly rich pinot noir, but not very big. A medium-long finish. Probably not a whole lot of time left for this wine; I have one more bottle left and am going to put it in the "drink fairly soon" bin. (1532 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 2/6/2014: 14.1% alcohol. Full red cherry color. Lovely bouquet of black cherry, baking spice, and that classic Keefer floral element. A richness to the nose. In the mouth, lively and well-balanced. It's got a rich character that's cut into by excellent acidity. Terrific fruit and a long finish. A- (1617 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 12/8/2013 & rated 93 points: As delicious as the previous bottle. Even paired well with Thai food! (1481 views)
Tasted by WinePT on 11/3/2012 & rated 91 points: Wonderful light-medium bodied Pinot. Tasted over 3 hours. Reddish color, just starting to show some brown. Cherry, strawberry, plum flavors with spice, herbs, and notes of tea. Smooth texture. My last bottle...not sure how much longer this wine would last. (2467 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 10/24/2012 & rated 90 points: Ruby color, with mature reddish characteristics; orange-like on the rim. Mostly cherry, some strawberry, herbs, spice and a subtle toasty oak aromas. Did not get the cola as I had in my prior tastings. Smooth and velvety in the mouth. A nice wine, but lacks the intensity of prior tastings. A fairly long and velvety finish. Paired nicely with a veal dish, prepared by my wife. The wine is at its apogee and probably in the later stage of its drinking plateau; not a long lived pinot noir (JMO). I have a couple bottles left and am putting them in my "drink fairly soon" bin. (2234 views)
Tasted by CP on 9/14/2012 & rated 93 points: One of the finest Pinots I've ever had, period. Slight brown tint to reddish color, mostly clear, lighter body. Mainly floral nose with plum and coffee undertones. Palate has everything you love about Sonoma Pinots, I would actually guess it was a Sonoma Coast rather than RRV if I tasted it blind. Very smooth mouthfeel, long fruity finish. Outstanding effort by Adam Lee. (2148 views)
Tasted by zheem on 7/2/2012 & rated 92 points: This bottle opens very tight, with little fruit or earth. Gradually after about two hours open, it began a little more in the nose, but the flavors and textures have exploded into an intense smoothness, with both acidity and velvet texture. The finish is long with plum, citrus zest and and starfruit. (1732 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 4/10/2012 & rated 91 points: Ruby color. I get cherry, raspberry, cola, not so earthy as last time, herbs, spice, a toasty aroma. Elegant and rich in the mouth. Prominent cherry flavors. A medium finish. Score again 91-92. (1682 views)
Tasted by blaine on 3/23/2012 & rated 88 points: This was good early on, faded quite quickly and had a very hard finish on the last glass. (1670 views)
Tasted by zheem on 2/25/2012: Delicious and surprizingly ready to drink with minimal open time, (1754 views)
Tasted by zheem on 12/11/2011: Lovely nose with spice and violets. Violets continue in the palate with more spice, cherry, wood and earth. Long finish that makes the tongue tingle--very pleasant! (2097 views)
Tasted by Dwey on 11/14/2011 & rated 92 points: 4 out of 5 stars, excellent, cherry, cola, earthy and spice. great color and clarity. very good feel on the palate. (2472 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 11/8/2011: Soft and fruited and just opened so a bit hard. Maybe it will open up? (2296 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 10/3/2011: Black cherry color. Fragrant nose showing a faint whiff of oak but dominated by black cherry, light baking spice, and floral notes. In the mouth, velvety and refined, with lovely balance and interplay of the black cherry, floral, and spice notes. Good acidity and a long finish. Very solid wine that is only starting to come around. A- (2289 views)
Tasted by WinePT on 9/29/2011 & rated 89 points: Cherry, herb, and tea. Some earthiness going on. (2236 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 9/13/2011 & rated 91 points: Slight yellowing on the rim; ruby color. Aromas of cherry, some raspberry, dustiness, earthy, herbs, spice. Seems a tad more developed from 10 months ago. Rich in the mouth, with a bit of tartness. Cherry spice flavors. A medium to long finish. Score 91-92. (2331 views)
Tasted by enovino on 6/19/2011: Clear, Dark red color. Nose has a trace of funky earth, with lightly sweet cherries. Taste is mix of pure sweet cherry and mildly tart raspberries. Extremely well-balanced acidity that excites the mid-palate with it's silky texture. light to medium bodied. Pure flavors. Well done. Thanks Lil, for sharing! (2959 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Keefer Ranch Vineyard

Keefer Ranch is located in the Green Valley appellation in the southwestern corner of the Russian River Valley. The 30 acre vineyard is located on gently rolling hills in an area known to have some of the coolest weather in the Russian River Valley. Morning and evening fog, gentle afternoon breezes, cool overnight temperatures and warm afternoon sun produce grapes with terrific natural acidity and a combination of elegance and intensity. Marcy Keefer and her son Craig Strehlow grow some of the best Pinot Noir grapes in Sonoma County and we are proud to have them as members of the family. The site has a superb micro-climate, offering just the right amount of warmth during the day and very cool nights, which leads to intensely focused red fruited wine with strong natural acidity.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
