Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 82 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jerrywine on 12/8/2023 & rated 92 points: Tasted a bit restrained at first, decanted in a travel bottle. Really started to open at dinner about a hour later and seemed to continue to open throughout the meal. It showed cherries, other fruits some dried and slight bit of tar. The finish was long and smooth to the end. Out to dinner with a group of wine friends so very busy and a lot of wines to taste but this one stood out. (635 views)
Tasted by nschmidt on 11/22/2023 & rated 94 points: Right in its window. (716 views)
Tasted by Eric Wright on 10/23/2021 & rated 89 points: Garnet, almost rusty color. On opening, nose is leather, oak, and olive. Body is medium. Tannins are surprisingly strong.
With food after one hour decant, leather notes more subtle. Mushroom notes are strong. Fruit is muted. Clearly high quality, but not extraordinary (2164 views)
Tasted by decaturwinedude on 9/15/2021: A Good Tuesday, Vol. VI: Italians (Benanti, Calafe, Produttori, Cornelissen, D&R, Quintarelli...: 2nd not great bottle of this in the last 2 years. I don't think these bottles were sound before they got to me. Muted. Tired. Non-desript, not showing Nebbiolo at all. (2679 views)
Tasted by ersmith on 10/20/2020 & rated 90 points: A little light - could spend some time time in the cellar. (2871 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 7/19/2020: Double blind; was in Rousillon or N. Spain. Served under less than ideal temperature conditions, this was at first too cool, then as the temp came in the zone, it showed a bit sappy, the fruits much more dark red than red. It struggled to show structure, elegance, and was instead just full-on drinkable, and perfect for a casual summer dinner. That said, I've little doubt this was anything other than a victim(?) of its circumstance - a hot Denver summer night. Having said all this, now I can lean on the owner of the bottle to open additional bottles in the name of proper research. NR

Tasted by HowardNZ on 6/28/2020: The 2004 Produttori Riservas: Asili wins by a nose (Magnum Society, Wellington, New Zealand): Served single blind, confused with the Montefico. I did not find the vegetal earthiness that I expect from a Produttori Ovello. My original pour was from a corked bottle but a later small sample from a clean bottle was very impressive (so it is reviewed accordingly). Ruby and some garnet colour. An attractive spicy red fruited and earthy bouquet. Rich, brambly fruit on palate. Plenty of rich, primary red fruit, red currant and raspberry. Brooding tannins. Well balanced. Excellent length. In its early drinking window. Impressive! My rating 5/7, group rating 3/7. (3719 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 3/17/2020 & rated 92 points: decanted one hour, consumed over three. air is your friend; taut, but delicious, savory, mint/cedar, core of redcurrant & plum; long lingering tangy finish; third hour best aromatically.

osso buco, risotto milanese (2612 views)
Tasted by decaturwinedude on 12/26/2019: Listen, people, don't open this wine right now. it needs time. There are glimpses of beauty and red fruit and floral elements. There is an interesting dark anise, licorice element and it is very regal. It is just very tight and cloaked up right now. Wait. And the wait some more. (2848 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 9/13/2019 & rated 90 points: Velbalansert flott frukt med svakt modning, fin pipetobakk, elegant (2289 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 8/9/2019 & rated 93 points: 2004 Barbarescos, like this one, are presently drinking very well. Also, reflecting the vintage, they are often, as again here, drinking in a style I like very much. Classical, cooler, savoury and showing a little tobacco. Largely red fruited, with some of it dried or preserved red berries. Both fresh and dried herbs and plenty of Ovello signature earthiness. Slightly green and vegetal, but meant as a positive descriptor. Now on its drinking plateau. (2527 views)
Tasted by laralh on 5/25/2019 & rated 89 points: Kirsebær, moreller, lakk, rose, litt rosin. Intens og lang. (2362 views)
Tasted by rwstorer on 4/8/2019 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured. Came alive after 30 minutes. Drinking beautifully (2327 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 11/21/2018: Overall still rather tight and tannic, but the aromatics are beautiful, so maybe only a little more patience is required. Will wait another five years or so before opening another. (2550 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 11/19/2018 & rated 93 points: Decanted. Dense medium brick-garnet color. Tertiary/umami notes on the nose - savory broth and mushrooms, leather, soil, dried rose hips, balsamic and a little port-like berry fruit that grows more subtle in the glass. Vivid cherry and red plum fruit on the palate evenly matched with floral and earthy secondary integration. Lithe and elegant density in the palate, rounded broad tannins, finishing with lengthy elegant depth. Showing beautifully. Give it some air to integrate the savory aromatics. This bottle was more mature than I expected - especially aromatically - likely some bottle variation from the norm based on feedback from Wineberserkers.com. (2292 views)
Tasted by jwsmith on 10/31/2018 & rated 93 points: This wine is singing right now gorgeous color... Long finish excellent (2129 views)
Tasted by laralh on 9/29/2018 & rated 88 points: Roser, lakris, nyper, tjære. Litt lite frukt. Lang og fyldig. (2071 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 9/8/2018: 2018 Visit to Produttori del Barbaresco with Aldo and David: An exquisite but very different, “cooler” nose than the 2005. Largely red berries and cherries, spices, citrus, tar and cut, fresh herbs on bouquet. On palate, a classical Barbaresco. “A lot of dry extract but slightly vegetal”, as Aldo noted. Well integrated tannins. Red cherries, red currants, earth and slightly salty minerals. Aldo suggested either drinking the 2004 now or holding for 4-5 years. Very good, for me, not far behind the 2005 in quality, for me. (3170 views)
Tasted by laralh on 8/4/2018 & rated 89 points: Moreller, krydder, salvie, litt kirsebær, lakk. Lang, fyldig. (1944 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 6/13/2018 & rated 91 points: A nice wine. Black cherry in color. Red berries, roses and a little tar on the nose. Sweet and sour cherry, earth, tar and cedar on the palate. No tannin and ready to drink. (2079 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 4/2/2018 & rated 91 points: P&P. Relativt fruktdrevt, men meget pen om temperaturen holdes på 15 grader. Enda bedre etter pumping og 3 dager i kjøleskap. Altså drikk eller vent. (2313 views)
Tasted by tewino on 11/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Very open nose right from the pop. Hardly any sediment on decant. Strong nose of an orchard garden in full bloom. Deep earthy semi bitter and very open nasally. I love it. (2588 views)
Tasted by laralh on 10/7/2017 & rated 86 points: Kirsebær, moreller, litt sitrus og krydder. Lang, medium fylde. Ikke optimal flaske. (2558 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 8/18/2017 & rated 93 points: Violets, cherries, red berries, and asphalt on the nose. Medium-high tannins that have integrated well with notes of cherries, red fruit, and spices on the palate. Long, lingering finish. (2620 views)
Tasted by Hecht_Pede on 7/2/2017 & rated 90 points: Long decant. Kind of borring and not as open as i would have thought, felt tired this time. Hmm not sure about what to do with the rest

Produttori del Barbaresco

O ok just

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
