Community Tasting Notes (average 94.5 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by George C ATLANTA on 10/1/2023 & rated 97 points: Likely the best CDP that I and my wine dinner / aficionado friend have ever had! From their likeliy best vintage and stored absolutely perfectly. The cork was like new, zero seepage. Wow!! Leather, dried figs, prunes... absolutely delicious and continuously evolving in the glass. Worth the $500 at retail of admission? Pricing at this level of wine is utterly subjective, not cost based -- as in other fine things. (540 views)
Sabon? 93 pts (1007 views)
95 vvPunkte www.vvwine.ch (1071 views)
Tasted by P&F on 1/4/2023 & rated 80 points: This might have been great at some point but it's faded. Starting to taste aged, maybe a little port-like, and looks "bricked." We corked it up and opened something else. This is the second bottle with the same impression. (859 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/6/2022: Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Fall 2022 Kick-off (Claud): From a magnum and towards the end of the night and yet this was drinking quite smooth - a bit like drinking velvet. Some nice fruit. I expected it to be much more intense, but it was indeed nice. (1615 views)
Tasted by sdr on 11/5/2021 & rated 87 points: A weak bottle, showing more alcohol and less fruit than previously. Are many of the exuberant ‘07s exsanguinating like this one? (1639 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 6/12/2021 & rated 92 points: The Columbia Group - Back Together Again (Our Place): The second of four Rhone Blends tasted blind with a dinner of Lamb Tagine. Notes were taken and the four wines were revealed after dinner. Group rank #4.

Decanted this bottle (with some sediment) for 2 hours - longer than our previous bottle in Feb. Although both bottles were part of the same auction lot, this bottle showed differently than that previous one.
The color was a medium violet to a faded rim. On the nose there was a flood of red fruit (mostly cherry) -- no surprise given the 95% Grenache in the blend. The medium to plus bodied palate showed this red fruit in abundance, along with some earth, some spice, and a touch of tannin. The acidity was juicy and was relatively balanced with the fruit, and there was no hint of the 15.5% abv.
Not certain why this bottle showed "lighter" - in color, fruit profile, and even body - than the previous one, as they were stored identically (by me). Still, a really nice wine that should hold for several years. (1682 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 2/8/2021 & rated 94 points: Am absolutely not a fan of 07 C9dP but this is a really well made wine avoiding the overripe fruit with often bitter tar or by now already oxidative notes that haunts many other wines in this hot vintage. Medium to dark garnet in the glass. Not the most expressive nose with some dark fruit and some spices. On the palate still impressive fruit concentration, still full bodied and very rich but not overripe with excellent acidity providing the required balance, layered dark fruit with some spices, not overly sweet, the indicated 15.5% (!) alc are not showing as heat, integrated tannins, medium length.
Very, very well done by Sabon in this tough vintage. Chapeau! 93-94 (1936 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 2/7/2021 & rated 94 points: Decanted (with some sediment) for 60 minutes, but the wine could have used an additional 30 minutes of air before enjoying. The color was a deep purple to a faded rim. There was a combination of red and dark red fruits on the nose. The medium to plus bodied silky palate showed red, dark red, and a touch of blue fruit, some earth, lots of spice, and a juicy acidity that nicely balanced all the fruit.
This wine seems to have held up very well over the 13+ years since its difficult vintage, and probably has a few more years in the tank. Glad to have one more bottle in the cellar. (1592 views)
Tasted by Kevnzworld on 10/22/2020 & rated 92 points: Ripe and almost medicinal. Not my style of CDP. (1724 views)
Tasted by Kim Gerner on 10/2/2020 & rated 85 points: CH9 semi blind vertical tasting of Pegau, Beaucastel and Salon 1990-2009 (Nordsjaelland): Unfortunately heavily influenced by tertiary caramel - that wine was tired.
The 2003 was on the other hand at the top. The best wine of the night. More delicate and less rich (less extraction, alcohol and body) than the other CH9 domaines we tasted. Perfect balance. Not a typical CH9 to be honest. Extremely nice and well balanced tertiary aroma of caramel on both the nose and palate. (1596 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 7/3/2020: Count me pleasantly surprised as, despite the heft and the vintage, this currently has its mass in check. Undoubtably modern, copious black and dark red fruits and a large body, it none the less manages to charm with lots of spice, pepper, and some licorice and floral elements. Enough acidity to keep it from feeling overly heavy. Not my style, but certainly a good bottle. (1549 views)
Tasted by ledwards on 12/29/2018 & rated 94 points: Dark ruby red. Medium body with sweet- almost candied fruit. Strawberry, red currant and blackberry. A touch of stone. An elegant wine. (2479 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 6/14/2018 & rated 94 points: On the nose: Sweet fruit, licorice, fudge and some alcohol
On the palate: Sweet fruit, licorice, black lead. Very fine balance
Medium + finish (2859 views)
Tasted by sdr on 3/10/2018 & rated 94 points: While I could not pick up a trace of Chateauneuf character, the wine was amazingly delicious. Clearly in the modern style, with oak and lavish fruit. But not at all overdone, at least for me, so I am rating it highly. No change in the glass over a couple of hours. Perhaps more typicity will emerge in a few years. (2905 views)
Tasted by mattiasjansson on 2/20/2018 & rated 97 points: Rhone dinner in Boston (Boston): So beautiful. Big and fruit-forward but simultaneously balanced and layered. (3403 views)
Tasted by FransS on 10/26/2017 & rated 92 points: I think this was the only wine my friend Loek served during the weekend I didn't understand. Normally a grenache ChdP showes for me a deep and 'dark' taste, often with cocoa, but this wine had only a medium deep colour, lots of nice fruit and 'only' a medium body and aftertaste. Although decanted this wine could still be to young. If there is a change of retasting this wine, I will be very attentive. (3322 views)
Tasted by Munch on 10/25/2017 & rated 97 points: Chateauneuf-Du Pape, The 2007 Vintage, A 10 Year Retrospective: Wine number 8 of 18 in a 2007 CdPape retrospective. First word in TN is "wow". In the middle of a lot of great wines this one stood out as one of the best. Great balance and smooth plush silky flavors of red and black fruits with a great nose and finish. Great now or in 10 years. (3356 views)
Tasted by wineappellation on 10/16/2017 & rated 97 points: It is young but approachable with a few hours of slow ox. Intense and attractive ripe mixed black and red berries and sweet dried fruits, some floral, leather, hint of game. On palate it is ultra pure and extremely focus, very big but so light. Supreme balance with such high alcohol 15.5abv and concentration. Elegant. Pure expression of this old vine Grenache. (1976 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 5/1/2016 & rated 98 points: Such a beautiful sense of purity here in the fruit, it is impossible not to be drawn in to take another sniff and sip. Sweet, fresh, ripe and juicy, with loads of peppery fruit and silky, elegant, refined and polished textures that just do not want to quit. Still young, it is impossible not to see this is simply a stunning wine. (5163 views)
Tasted by bambam on 3/16/2016 & rated 99 points: OMG, drinking beautiful right now. The nose explodes from the glass. Lavender and ripe red fruits soar from the glass. Silky smooth going down, kirsch, lavender and a hint of beef blood. Lots of youth, absolutely no heat. I'm a fan! (4502 views)
Tasted by johnbhamrick on 1/24/2016 & rated 97 points: Should have checked what I paid before guzzling this one. Very good but what a mistake. (4321 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/4/2015 & rated 99 points: Packed and stacked with layer after layer of perfectly ripe, extremely ripe and over ripe, fresh, sweet, pure fruits. The wine is liqueur of Chateuaneuf du Pape. It feels great on your palate and it really lingers, leaving you remembering how great this was, and wanting another sniff, swirl and sip. (6449 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 8/31/2014 & rated 92 points: inte stenkoll på detta betyg men det stod 92 i mina anteckningar. Dock var jag aningen onykter när detta vin serverades. (6516 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 8/25/2014 & rated 97 points: Opened up to breath in bottle for 6 hour before transferring to a decanter for 2 hour. A little alcoholic but processes a flavorful concentration of candied cherry, sweet tobacco, anise, and a touch of smoked meat. In an excellent place. (4646 views)

Roger Sabon

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape. Quote from the homepage of the domain: "One of the oldest documented landholders in Chateauneuf du Pape, the Sabon family has controlled vineyards in the zone since 1540".
Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today Jean-Jacques, Denis and Gilbert Sabon.
The vinification is since 2001 in the care of Didier Négron, son-in-law of Jean- Jacques Sabon.
Denis and his son Julien take care of the fields. Delphine, daughter of Denis is often in the reception.

Today the property has 15 ha. in AOC Chateauneuf du Pape and owns 17 ha. of vineyards in Roquemaure from where Lirac and Cotes du Rhone are made.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
