Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 48 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Topper on 3/17/2024 & rated 94 points: Finally got to drink this and thought it was very pretty. Interesting contrast to the La las in that it was less extracted, with more balanced fruit and none of the peculiar (though delicious) bacon fat quality found in the Guigal wines. This was pure, sweet Syrah and a treat to drink (185 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 8/6/2022 & rated 94 points: Dark blood red, shows a little development.
Crushed herbs, salty, dark spice, fine oak spice, plums and cassis.
Dark fruits, good intensity, licorice and tar spice, sweet leather, creamy tannins, fine acidity. Ripe dark fruits, a little more than usual, pushes the secondary flavours a little back. Delicious drinking. (1427 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 7/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Rhône Tasting-cum-Lunch (Restaurant Rijsel, Amsterdam, NL): Quite a success for this vintage, deep and warm but vibrant and fresh, with firm but ripe tannins, powerful and concentrated but without excess or errors, relatively little terroir expression as the vintage dominates, has matured very well. (2217 views)
Tasted by dannyg on 9/28/2021 & rated 94 points: This was a tasting with Northern and Southern Rhone wines. 6 bottles and I had ranked it 2, beaten by Hermitage Le Chapelle, of course.
If you still have this bottle. Keep. Still rich in fruits, very rich, good structure in tannins to keep the fruits together. Just luscious. (1754 views)
Tasted by Ksquare on 1/29/2021 & rated 93 points: Also much better than the previous bottle. Drank alongside the Torbreck Factor 2003. Completely different. This has a meaty, sauvage character with a mineral undertone. Secondary notes of leather. Evolving in glass and going strong. Can easily last another 5 years. (2082 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 9/26/2020 & rated 91 points: Ripe vintage, heat, touch of green woody notes, overall balanced. 91-92 (2079 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 3/8/2020 & rated 93 points: Acker Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie Retrospective (1978 - 2005) (NY): The heat of the vintage showing through, but so does the winemaker's deft in keeping it non-jammy and balanced. Rusty dark fruit. Long finish with some earthy notes. High acidity and still youthful with some secondary notes. I really enjoyed this, some others thought too sweet for the style. 93 (2224 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 8/10/2019: Smokin Meat and Serious Syrah 2.0 (Westport, CT): Also a bit on the young side, but a wine that I quite enjoyed. '03 was obviously a very hot year, but this was meant to be more in the balanced style. So it's darker berry jam but not quite as sweet and then just a hint of maybe bark that seems to be a touch more savory and less fruity. (2432 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/13/2019 & rated 92 points: Reduction notes, big, gooey, raspberry. A very good mouthful. Dirty Dozen N. Rhone at Taylors. (2053 views)
Tasted by Deepdrop on 11/24/2018 & rated 93 points: Same note as before. This wine is in a good place. Fruit and secondary flavors are in balance. Drink over the next few years. (1857 views)
Tasted by rlove on 3/24/2018 flawed bottle: Mercaptans. (2311 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 12/29/2017 & rated 93 points: Medium bodied. Black olive, roasted meat, herbal notes. Cranberry and wild cherry fruits. There’s still a lot going here, making for a nicely contemplative glass- but probably starting on its evolutionary downside. (2160 views)
Tasted by Deepdrop on 4/28/2017 & rated 94 points: 2 hour decant. Musky and sweet fruit on the nose. Opulent burst of sweet dark cherry coupled with some minerality on the back end. Really nice layers throughout. I like where this wine is today. (2623 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 10/9/2016 & rated 96 points: At close to 14 years of age, this is really coming of age. The nose explodes with black cherry liqueur, charcoal, smoke, herbs, licorice, earth and gun flint aromas. The texture takes it to the next level with its opulent, sensuous mouth feel. The wild cherry in the finish shows a beautiful sense of purity. No decanting needed here. Pop and pour delivers the magic. Not quite as concentrated as previous bottles, but the wine has really added a lot of sensuality on the palate. (4063 views)
Tasted by LambertsCellar on 10/17/2015 & rated 87 points: This was disappointing. The blueberry nose overwhelmed. Some faint hints of animal fat, metal, blood and minerals, but the techne and apparent influence of oak overpowered everything. Too bad. (3615 views)
95 pts (3889 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/30/2013 & rated 97 points: What a super wine! Poured into a decanter and a glass. From the first sip, this wine rocked. Lush, rich, sweet, fat, clean fruit, a fragrance that grew as the wine enjoyed air with ample structure and ripe tannins to age, what more can you ask for? Very stylish wine that will only get better with time. (5355 views)
94 (4321 views)
Tasted by cardsandwine on 6/30/2013: Not a whole lot going on here. Previous review about the wine being a bit light is accurate. (3966 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 11/24/2012: Surprisingly light for the vintage, but also not very interesting - generic Syrah-ish. (3855 views)
Tasted by roquenroell on 11/17/2010 & rated 90 points: Tasted at Goedhuis & Co 2009 Rhone tasting 16/11/10, London.
Rene and Pierre Rostaing were showing their Classique, La Landonne and Cote Blonde 2009 with a flight of 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 La Landonne.

Big Structure and not ready yet - would need a year or two to mature. Has the potential of a 92 but a 90 now. 2001 showing better now. (4899 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/16/2010 & rated 90 points: Goedhuis & Co, Rhone & The Midi (Saatchi Gallery, London): Still very young. Similar to the 05, lots of roast meat and bacon on the nose. Not as complete as the 05. Unfortunately scarred a bit by the very hot 03. (4534 views)
Tasted by Whistler on 9/16/2010: Followed the advice of Mr P on the drinking window which states 2006 onwards but this seems way too young right now and I will not approach for another 5 years. There is fruit and tannin but not melded together yet. Sent it back to off site storage to allow for other ready to go wines to step up. (3422 views)
Tasted by Lipsman on 8/11/2010 & rated 89 points: Big, smooth, fully resolved tannins. Tastes of dark fruits, plums, richness of prunes but balanced acidity keeps it lively. Full bodied with a long taste but not very complex. Perhaps this will open with additional aging? Loads of fruit, but not enough acid or tannin for the long haul. -JBL (3656 views)
Tasted by King Cab on 8/11/2010: What a expressive and elegant Côte-Rôtie. It started with some wonderful spring flowers, black fruits, and cherry and evolved to add some sage, tar and rubbed leather. More black than blue this always kept its feminine side in show. This was long and precise with a nice balance, focus and purity. A long finish kept it all alive for a minute plus. Beautiful. (4467 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

La Landonne

COTE ROTIE
"The Landone"
Côte-Rôtie “La Landonne” completes this famous trilogy. An immense and pure wine with intense flavors and deep colour, this is the perfect wine for ageing.

“The treasures are born in the very heart of the most legendary of the illustrious plots of the Maison Guigal. These precious bottles are as coveted as they are rare and have benefited from extreme care at every stage of the process, from the vine to the cellars. They are the sole embodiment of the inspiration and inheritance of centuries of viticulture in an exceptional terroir”

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
