Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Dave Herzig on 11/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Deep ruby in color with hints of mocha and mint. Long finish on the back of the palate, think this will cellar for a few more years. (343 views)
Tasted by JulianSkeels on 9/4/2023 & rated 94 points: Very strong and pure mocha and mint nose. Great density and richness with both Cabernet and Shiraz clearly coming through (and both are very broad and good quality). Nice long minty finish which provides freshness given the lack of acidity. Excellent and highly underrated wine. Oak is a little drying though. Improves with 30mins in the glass. No hurry here - drink to 2030 easily. 94pts (372 views)
Tasted by sgsh100 on 9/1/2022 & rated 95 points: Garnet to black in colour. No sign of browning. Mint, tobacco, black fruit, long palate. Mouth filling acid. Wonderful wine (841 views)
Tasted by maaike2 on 8/11/2022 & rated 94 points: What a joy to taste and drink this wine. Jammy, but not overdone, spicy, lots of red fruit, elegant and long lasting. Delicious. (815 views)
Tasted by Mr Laroux on 6/12/2022: Absolutely delicious. Like the review below, the cork was challenging but the wine in tact. Very strong notes of strawberry jam on the palate. I've also had the 2001 and 2002 over the past few weeks. The 2005 is definitely the stand out. (881 views)
Tasted by sjw_11 on 5/14/2022 & rated 95 points: I went looking for the specific blend of this vintage but it seems Yalumba will give you the precise % of each type of oak used but keeps secret the proportions of Cab and Shiraz. Terrible cork that crumbled away, but once the wine was out it was clear it had at least done its job and the wine itself was terrific. Rich stewed plum. Fruit pudding. Classic Barossa character. Gathers weight and intensity with air. Right in its drinking window now but might fractionally improve over a couple of years and should hold for 10 in a good cellar. (830 views)
Tasted by sswine on 3/12/2022 & rated 94 points: Vertical tasting dinner with 2005, 2006 & 2008 Yalumba Signatures (decanted 3 hours). All three drank with dinner which was lamb 3 ways (rosemary lamb chops, braised lamb breast stuffed w merguez), lobster mac & cheese & minted peas.

2005 - my word this was superb. Lovely nose of muted and lingering cherry and chocolate. On the taste this was long and smooth with perfect sweetness. No fruit bombing here - this is drinking amazingly right now; shame I dont have anymore!!

All 3 are wonderful examples of really good Aussie wines - leading the world with these cab/shiraz blends. (818 views)
Tasted by catchnrelease on 12/28/2021 & rated 93 points: Cork was shot but the wine was holding up really well, could go longer but in a great place now balancing primary and tertiary notes. (740 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 11/21/2021 & rated 93 points: Cork crumbled but wine fully intact. Plenty of black fruit still evident, with a bit of fresh redcurrant. Very full in the mouth, plenty of secondary development, some spice and herbs, this is a great package at its peak, and really good VFM. (742 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 10/2/2020 & rated 89 points: Opaque core; blast of black fruit
tremendous depth & power, saturated black fruit; unapologetic fulsome finish. This has 10 years to run. (1328 views)
Tasted by Jnihols7 on 9/1/2019 & rated 95 points: Dark purple/garnet, berry and floral nose, big and lovely blue and black fruit with a touch of mint on the palate, fully integrated tannins with a soft silky mouth feel to a medium long finish, lots of life left in this wine, I can understand why it is a classic, lovely wine. (1692 views)
Tasted by Revro on 8/10/2019 & rated 96 points: Super wine (1568 views)
Tasted by urbanhick on 8/1/2019 & rated 89 points: Still has a ton of fruit and a lovely nose. Colour is dark with slight browning at the edges. Finish is short to medium and doesn't linger as long on the tongue as I would have expected. Still a very nice wine. (1459 views)
Tasted by RobertLA on 3/2/2019 & rated 94 points: Wonderful fruit and great length. The tenants are now fully integrated and it has a very soft gentle finish. Easily will last another 3 to 5 years but well into it’s drinking window now (1628 views)
Tasted by Robbie K on 11/6/2018 & rated 94 points: Has retained plenty of purple to the body, but there is a wateriness now to the rim. Reasonable, but by no means high viscosity.
A ripe, berry dominant nose; both blue and black fruit. Also vanilla, caramel and mixed spices.
The blackcurrant, and cedar palate has a mintiness to it, and is rich and full. The length is superior, with prominent tannin still in tow.
Has the depth of fruit and stuffing to easily see out another decade. (1332 views)
Tasted by ruth3 on 9/2/2017: big, upfront rich dark red fruit with some mint, good length and mouth coating (1718 views)
Tasted by Nostromo99 on 7/8/2017 & rated 89 points: Big, rich Barossa nose. Quite thick in the mouth. Loads of ripe Barossa fruit - dark and rich. Not exactly delicate, but not overpowering either. Quite sweet, but again, not excessively. Very good length thanks to that mouth-coating quality. Tannins well integrated. Doesn't seem to be all that developed, so I suspect it has many years ahead of it. Probably just in the sweet spot right now. I'm not a big fan of big Barossa reds, but this is a nice drop. (1946 views)
Tasted by RobertLA on 5/30/2017 & rated 92 points: Wonderful balance of fruit. Drinking perfectly now (1999 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 10/27/2016 & rated 90 points: Steak wines @ Lurra (Lurra, London): Thick and dense and gloopy syrup. Hard to judge as it's so far from my thing. If you like the style there's nothing wrong with it, but very sweet and seemingly one dimensional. ***1/2 ?? (2801 views)
Tasted by whme on 9/10/2016 & rated 95 points: Kept really well. They really got this blend just right. Very good complexity. No need to rush, many years left. (2264 views)
Tasted by ruth3 on 9/25/2015 & rated 90 points: upfront curranty red fruit, smooth supple tannins with a minty finish. an elegant wine with years ahead of it. (1968 views)
Tasted by Imagnu on 9/24/2015: Past it (2224 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 6/11/2015: red colour still with some purple here
plummy nose, touch of spice no overt oak
very complex nose, touch of herbs, the fruit smells lovely
Very fresh, plenty of tannin but it's smooth
Savoury oaky finish
Intense, harmonious and elegant
Seriously good
Drinking well now but i'd love to try in 5, 10 years. It'll be even better (2047 views)
Tasted by christhewino on 10/19/2013 & rated 90 points: Fantastic nose of bright red fruits, delicious spicy red fruit flavours and a peppery finish. Although it is lovely I would suggest there is another 5+ years in this and it shouldn't be touched just yet. (3419 views)
Tasted by burgburgburg on 2/13/2013 & rated 92 points: allowed three hours bottle breath uncorked; a muscular man in bouquet and a elegant lady in palate; strong, a little bit alcohol indeed, and pronounced black fruits, mint, spicy and vanilla in aroma; powerful but charming; textured but simple palate; dissolved tannin with delicious acidity in finish; a very balanced wine now; can enjoy alone without fruit; good to drink now or cellar for 2-3 more years (3904 views)

Cabernet-Shiraz Blend

A very popular blend in Australia-particularly from South Australia, where the two varietals work well together. The most famous of these would be the Penfolds Bin 389, considered Australia's most cellared wine. In years gone by this was referred to as "Baby Grange" as some of the wine used barrels from the vintage of Grange.

The 2018 Paternus states only McLaren Vale Shiraz (no Cab Sav).
