Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 137 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by asheio on 4/26/2024 & rated 90 points: Nice bottle with good fruit and complexity. (448 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 3/29/2024 & rated 89 points: This started out so promisingly; cedar, cassis, tobacco and leather seasoned with spice and underpinned with pleasing tannins. Savoury but with a subtle sweetness induced by barrique ageing this developed a satisfying mocha finish. In spite of its maturity the wine also retained an uplifting freshness, but the entire construct was marred by Brett which once detected became ever more dominant with each successive mouthful, and accordingly my initial high score in the low 90s, fell to an 89. CHP 89 pts (513 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 3/27/2024 & rated 92 points: Once again, much improvement from the 08, which has defied my initial expectations. It won't quite hit the heights of the 01, I think, but it's better than the 02, 04 or 06 and arguably better than the 03. It has taken on depth and body over the years, which is weird, but above all a certain Pauillac-like gravitas, with cassis and cedar notes on the nose and a moderate dose of cassis in the mouth, whilst remaining true to the SM tradition of a slight mintiness to the finish.

Still readily accessible, this is well worth trying. (780 views)
Tasted by cdeco001 on 1/27/2024 & rated 94 points: great wine, good drinking now or in a 2 to 3 years (820 views)
Tasted by WojteG on 11/8/2023 & rated 93 points: 10 months ago I had a 2001 vintage - 92 points. Let's see if this younger one is also a better one. 2 hours in the decanter
⏰🕙🕐
The story of this Chateau could be great for a movie.
Very shortly - it was established in 1633! In 1969 Chateau in very poor condition was bought by negociant Jean Gautreau. Now - many critics agree that it belongs to the 5th Growth Class category. People like it or hate it because Chateau doesn't green harvest or de leaf in the summer like most estates.
It is rustic, full of herbs.
Let's see
It's soft, it's balanced, it's polished. Silky texture. Perfect ripe, grippy tannins and vivid acidity. Herbs? Yes they are here, but also red cherries, blackberries, minerals, tobacco ( really nice and visual) and spice. Long, long finish with spice.
Nice smell of ripe red cherry, forest, cedar.
I don't know if it's good or bad, but me and my wife emptied this bottle in about an hour. 😱😃

Tasted by GAET on 10/29/2023 & rated 89 points: C'est bon, plutôt sur la longueur que la largeur. Mais pas transcendant. (1233 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 7/28/2023 & rated 92 points: A delicious combination of cassis, pencils and tobacco supported by ripe tannins and spice, and rounding off with a generous lick of black chocolate. Just a fraction short on the finish, it’s savoury, refined, elegant and perfectly poised, in fact everything you could ever ask for in a glass of good claret. CHP 92 pts (1489 views)
Tasted by Oliverl1 on 7/15/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 12 hours, and like most vintages from Sociando Mallet, it needed it! Good complexity, very concentrated but still rather tannic and on the young side. Can be had now provided you give it a 10+ hour decant. Try again in 5 years. 2008 was not a great vintage in the Médoc, by SM got it right! (1367 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 5/8/2023 & rated 91 points: Interesting comparison with a Bordeaux blend from South Africa (Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2008). Sociando rowing at same speed, with typical violet, roast and liquorice present in the early development phase of a SM. Overll well structured, but don't expect much more to happen over the next 5-10 year. Suggest to drink your 2008s while waiting for the promising 2005 or 2009. (1290 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 8/1/2022 & rated 91 points: decanted 30mins and consumed over an hour at Blacklock Covent Garden. No formal notes taken but presented itself nicely as a correct bottle of claret showing notes of cassis & pencil shavings and smooth, fine tannins.
went well with roast dinner (2891 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 5/20/2022 & rated 92 points: This is coming on nicely, very nicely in fact. Much the same sensations as the last bottle in October 21, so cedar, violet and blackcurrant aromas, followed by quite a soft, silky mouthful of blackcurrant and plum, with this time the dark cherry on the finish. Very lithe and youthful still, but drinking very well. I'm not sure this will reach the heights of the 2001, but it's a lot better than most 00s, for example, for a lot less.
It's a good bet while waiting for the 05, 09 and 10 to come around. (3078 views)
Tasted by jviz on 4/24/2022 & rated 92 points: PnP, followed over 3 hours. Medium garnet in color, the 08 Sociando is in a nice place right now. It has a lovely pen ink note, some green pepper and black currant. Classic and fresh, if a little short on the finish. Structurally still a bit coiled but it is just the essence of classic left bank BDX in so many senses. (2958 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 4/16/2022 & rated 91 points: Fresh and smoky with lively ruffled tannins. On the palate the fruit flavours comprise ripe plums and blackcurrant with a hint of mint, but the finish is surprisingly dry and all the better for it. There’s spice too. The flavours persist in a lingering finale. Beautifully proportioned and balanced this performs at the top level from uncorking the bottle to the very last drop. The flavours and complexity gently unfold so the imbiber never loses interest. Eminently digestible, I savoured every mouthful. CHP 91 pts (2820 views)
Tasted by asheio on 2/7/2022 & rated 91 points: More mature and expressive fruit than previous bottle. Actually very good. (3174 views)
Tasted by Wadham Cellar on 2/6/2022 & rated 91 points: Have had a few bottles over last two years. This the best by some distance. Classic maturing Bordeaux nose and profile. Lacks the stuffing to be great but this is elegant, classic left bank. (2049 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 2/3/2022 & rated 89 points: There are some Bordeaux Chateaus on this planet,
if I did find them on a wine list in a restaurant PRE CO..., normally choosed a bottle of them, if not hooked by maybe a Bourgogne, Rioja or?

These three are Montrose, high class Cru and very food friendly, the other two are Poujeaux and this one Sociando M.,

Luckily always find some of these in my personal wine lists,

so pnp this one immediately,
a fine smell of cassis, barnyard, cedar, tobacco emerges,
the palate clean, the tannin a little rough but clearly resolved,
fine black fruit, a mineral core with pencil lead, fine cuban tobacco, all this with grip, mid bodied , VERY food friendly paired with gulash, south europe spicy style, long convincing finish, a very good bottle really,
not one of the very best vintages from Sociando, like 82, 90, 96, 2000 or 2005, but quite satisfying doing a good job!

Last third of this bottle 24hours later:
somehow very grany tannin now, a little unbalanced though, rough mouthfeel (2387 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Bright, crisp, chunky red fruits, chewy tannins, and loads of herbs, cedar and tobacco leaf on the nose and palate, which finishes with chewy tannins attached to the sweet and quite fresh, peppery red berries, green forest leaf and herbs. A few more years in the cellar could add more softness to the wine. (3363 views)
Tasted by WineTimeFineTime on 12/8/2021 & rated 91 points: Very enjoyable. Dust, plum, persipan, with a lift of sweetness at the end. (2054 views)
Tasted by yeastyboy on 10/24/2021 & rated 92 points: Medium red, cassis, cedar, spices. Full mouth, still a lot of tannins. Cassis, sweet finish. (2117 views)
Tasted by Mr Coone on 10/23/2021: Didn't really take notes, but wine was over abundant in primary flavours. Prune, cherry, blueberries, pepper,...

Served it with a grilled steak (1973 views)
Tasted by Eric Becker on 10/23/2021 & rated 91 points: Dark slightly translucent ruby. On the nose still primary with precise flavours of cassis, herbs and a deft touch of oak, not the sweet vanilla style, instead woody and slightly charred. In the mouth this is only medium-bodied, but really quite intense and persistent. While the fruit feels ripe without prominent bellpepper, the overall impression is about serious dryness and robust tannic structure. The wine is approachable now, however it is classically proportioned claret and should evolve positively for another decade. Vintage 2008 yielded some beautiful Medocs of old times, this is one of them. (2000 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 10/18/2021 & rated 90 points: Still a little young but much better than the first bottle I tried, four years ago, which I clearly misjudged. Aromas of cedar, fresh blackcurrant and violet, then quite a crisp, fresh mouthful of blackcurrant, with a wave of plum and dark cherry midpalate and a decent finish. This will probably be worth a couple more points in a few years from now. (2092 views)
Tasted by Edouard84 on 10/12/2021 & rated 91 points: Lovely elegance and freshness on this vintage. (1915 views)
Tasted by Dj6544 on 9/25/2021 & rated 91 points: This is really nice, loads of chunky blackcurrant and cedar with tons of savoury notes balancing out this full, satisfying and enjoyable claret. A tinge of secondary notes there now, would feel very good about the next 10/15 years if I owned a case. (1702 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 9/19/2021 & rated 91 points: C: Garnet.
N: Graphite & cedar - classic claret.
T : Graphite and cedar with a little more red fruit in addition to the black. Fresh, vibrant with distinctive tannins. Fine balance and lovely finish.
I: A really classy and well balanced claret. 91 points (1718 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

Read more about Haut Medoc and its wines Long-standing fame The legally created division into Médoc and Haut-Médoc dates from 1935. But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
