Tasted by G_H on 2/28/2024 & rated 95 points: Three decades of Screaming Eagle: I tend to be a sceptic of 2002 Napa, given the issue with overripness, but this showed quite beautifully. Ripe but a decent distance away from overripe. Herbs, creme de cassis, good length and body. (340 views)
Tasted by BellevuePhil on 9/2/2023 & rated 95 points: In the dimly lit parlors of an age-old mansion, where history whispered through every creaking floorboard, I found myself in a predicament both thrilling and guilt-ridden. As a member of upper society, I had grown accustomed to the luxuries that life had bestowed upon me, but tonight's adventure would challenge the very essence of my existence. It was a moonlit evening, and I stood at the crossroads of privilege and recklessness, holding a bottle of the 2002 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon – a treasure of the vineyards, a relic of opulence, and a portal to better times.

The 2002 Screaming Eagle, a wine that had long been revered among connoisseurs, had come into my possession through an unlikely twist of fate. As an adventurer, I had embarked on many a journey, but this one was different. It was a journey through the labyrinth of my own desires, where a single sip could unearth memories of opulent banquets and romantic escapades, while the guilt of my actions lingered in the background.

The moment I uncorked the bottle, the room was bathed in a cascade of aromas. The bouquet was an exquisite dance of dark berries, blackcurrant, and a hint of cedar. As I poured the ruby elixir into a crystal glass, its opulent hue shimmered in the candlelight. The first sip was a revelation. The wine embraced my palate with velvety textures, a symphony of black cherry, plum, and subtle hints of mocha. Its tannins were supple, like a lover's caress, and it left an indelible mark on my soul.

As an adventurer, I had traversed distant lands and faced the unknown with fearless determination. Yet, with each sip of this exceptional vintage, I was transported back in time to a world where luxury knew no bounds. It was as if I had stepped into a grand ballroom, adorned in the finest attire, waltzing through life with an unquenchable thirst for adventure. The wine became a time machine, and I was the hopeless romantic yearning for the past.

With every glass, the guilt intensified. I knew that this bottle was far beyond my means, a treasure of the elite. I felt the weight of my actions, the burden of indulgence, but I also felt alive in a way I hadn't in years. The wine was a seductive temptress, luring me deeper into a world of opulence and extravagance, a world I had only glimpsed from the periphery.

The 2002 Screaming Eagle was more than a wine; it was an experience, a journey through time and taste. Its complexity unfolded with each passing minute, revealing new layers of flavor and emotion. The mid-palate was an explosion of dark chocolate and blackberry, followed by a long, lingering finish that whispered promises of romance and adventure.

As a hopeless romantic, I couldn't help but draw parallels between the wine and my own life. It reminded me of the times when I had pursued love with the same fervor that I now pursued this forbidden elixir. The wine's depth and complexity mirrored the intricate dance of relationships, where every moment held the potential for discovery and passion.

I closed my eyes and let the memories wash over me. I recalled a night under the starry skies of Paris, where I had stolen a kiss from a stranger on the banks of the Seine. The wine brought back the scent of blooming roses in a Tuscan garden, where I had confessed my love to a woman whose name I could no longer remember. It was as if the 2002 Screaming Eagle had become a vessel for my own nostalgia, a conduit to a past filled with unbridled romance and daring adventures.

As the bottle dwindled, so did my reservations. I had crossed a threshold into a world I had only dreamed of, and there was no turning back. The guilt that had initially weighed on my conscience had transformed into a sense of liberation. I was no longer bound by the constraints of society or the limitations of my own means. I was a traveler through time and taste, a hopeless romantic in search of the next exhilarating chapter.

In the dying embers of the evening, I raised my glass to the moon, its silvery glow casting a soft, ethereal light upon my reflection. The 2002 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon had been both my downfall and my salvation. It had reminded me of the intoxicating allure of the past, the thrill of adventure, and the power of love. I may have been guilty of indulging in its splendor, but in that moment, I was unapologetically alive.

In the end, the 2002 Screaming Eagle was not just a wine; it was a mirror to my soul, reflecting the complexities of my desires and the depths of my passions. It had transported me to a world of opulence and extravagance, where I had danced with the ghosts of my past and embraced the reckless abandon of a hopeless romantic. As the final drop of this exquisite vintage touched my lips, I knew that I had embarked on a journey that would forever shape my destiny – a journey through time and taste, guided by the whispers of history and the echoes of love. And without a doubt, it was the best wine I had ever had. (769 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 1/16/2022 & rated 98 points: read Jeff Leve's note. Not more to say, Great! (2066 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/6/2021 & rated 98 points: Powerful, full-bodied, concentrated, rich, and intense, the nose kicked off with roasted Espresso beans, blackberry, smoke, and licorice with hints of dark red and blue fruits. Huge, yet poised, balanced, long, clean, and fresh, there was a touch of heat in the finish, yet the heat seemed lost in the wealth of all that ripe fruit. (2944 views)
Tasted by BenSlivka on 12/31/2020 flawed bottle: We bought this wine at release from the winery. Delivered in 2005. Opened it to celebrate New Year's Eve, and...it was corked. Strong TCA notes on the cork, and in the glass. We paid $300 (on the mailing list), auction price is ~$2,500. Tragedy. (2939 views)
Tasted by KoalaHK on 10/12/2019: Drink at Giandos Hong Kong - Hype doesn't do wine any favours and opening a Screaming Eagle unfortunately is always going to suffer from a large dose of it. Having said that this was a big rich wine that is Premier Division Napa Cab. If anything this bottle was a bit muted, but serving it after at least a dozen wines also probably didn't help.  Tasted by tcosgriff on 9/12/2019 & rated 98 points: Deep garnet color with a wonderful bouquet and flavor of cassis and eucalyptus with some tobacco notes in the ending. Screaming Eagle is a wine that defines balance, achieving a sense of purity and a caressing mouthfeel. Great depth with a very long finish. The perfect wine for my wife's birthday on Florida's Emerald Coast. It was only outdone by the Bryant Family 2009. (3358 views)

Tasted by fcxj on 6/17/2018 & rated 96 points: Deep purple hue. Lifted, clean, ripe fruit aromas, though some vanilla hints remain. Subtle flavors and really soft, integrated tannins. Medium length. (3643 views)
Tasted by Mike V on 4/26/2016 & rated 96 points: At Spruce with an amazing duck breast. Great nose. An amazing balanced wine ready to go but will last years (5861 views)
Tasted by Bachus Maling on 11/11/2015 & rated 100 points: Opened on my 50th birthday. Paired with a Bone In Chicago style Rib Eye. It was liquid velvet. Pure and amazing. Memorable experience. (5554 views)
Tasted by jclary on 7/13/2015 & rated 99 points: Screaming Eagle to me has always been the standard bearer for balance, and this bottle had it in spades. Perfectly open and ready to drink, but with many years ahead of it. I wish I could try it in 10 years, but this was the last of my three bottle allocation. A truly outstanding wine that can stand up to anything in the world. (6273 views)
Tasted by Rosengoo on 12/20/2014 & rated 99 points: This was drank at a local restaurant after 1 hour of decanting. It was poured alongside a 1989 Haut Brion. The wine was ruby red in colour and clear. I've said it before that Screaming Eagle is the most Bordeaux like of any California Cabernet that I have ever had and tonight was no different. Although there were tons of red cherries and vanilla in the glass, nothing is in your face about this wine. Everything is just softer on the palate and in a wonderful balance. The tannins and acidity were there but quite light and I would never have guessed the high level of alcohol in this bottle. The finish was quite long as well. In conclusion, I wish some California wines like this were readily available at a reasonable price. (5853 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 12/16/2014 & rated 93 points: It was a very good napa cab with big fruits and lots of power. It is drinkable now. To me, this wine should not cost more than $400USD, but I paid $1k usd for it. In fact, it is selling for $3k usd in the market. Too much hype in the wine...poor value for money..Lucky that I only own 1 bottle. (5557 views)
Tasted by Didman on 12/10/2014 & rated 94 points: Certainly one of the finer California Cabs, possibly worth the $300 release price when you include the prestige value. This was my last bottle of this vintage and I have had the same opinion and rating with my prior bottles. Just a very nice Cabernet Sauvignon. (3137 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 12/2/2014 & rated 96 points: Imagine a single pieced, stealth like entry into the mouth via flawless balance...Followed by a decimation of tiny nuances of spice and brilliant fruit jubilee...Pretty cool wine, but hefty tag. (3220 views)
Tasted by gondrik on 5/15/2014 & rated 96 points: The most balanced wine we have ever had
Abundant and gorgeous fruit
No tar and cigar, no barnyard and creosote, no pencil lead, but soft herbal nuances
Lots of life remaining
Not to be compared as another Bordeaux or Cali Cab challenger (3345 views)
Tasted by GA on 11/11/2013 & rated 96 points: 11/13 Black cherry and fine firm tannins - extend drinking window to at least 2025 - excellent wine and, of course, only worth the price if one absolutely positively MUST have a Screagle. 96 pts. (3368 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 3/31/2013 & rated 94 points: Varied bottles of interest: Layered aromas of graphite, kirsch, cassis, dark chocolate and tobacco. I was not at all expecting how refined and nuanced this was going to be on the palate, in fact I found it to be quite compellingly balanced. The fruit is beautiful and has real depth to it as well as plenty of character. I'd love to see it in another decade or so, but realistically probably won't get the chance to do so! This was not the wine that I was really expecting, but found it seriously great anyway. (4679 views)
Tasted by Didman on 9/14/2012 & rated 94 points: Rich cab aroma and flavors, but could not quite stand up to a 1995 Lafite opened at the same time. Never-the-less, a really delicious mouthfull with lots of life left. (4921 views)
Tasted by LarryF on 12/23/2011 & rated 95 points: lush (6774 views)
Tasted by Ed Chen on 12/18/2011 & rated 94 points: Holiday Tastings; 12/16/2011-12/20/2011 (Redlands): Intense cherry nose with nut oil overtones, big black fruit with cocoa and figs, with air, violets emerge, this is 1990 Margaux-like on the nose with a touch higher alcohol at 14.5%, this is almost balanced for a Cali cult; 94 (4000 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 9/27/2011 & rated 94 points: Started off poorly - overextracted, plummy and very alcoholic. It opened on the palate while the nose did not improve - the palate meanwhile became very interesting, great complexity and good nuanced red fruits that were more than a big fruit bomb but actually had some character and interest. I wish I had a cyrstal ball to see what this will be like in 20 years! (5314 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 6/22/2010: Celebration Dinner (Inovasi, Lake Bluff, IL): Very dark red/black fruits on both the nose and palate. Some cedar and vanilla notes as well. Fine tannins on the gripping finish. Good balance. Very nice wine. (5551 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/22/2010 & rated 93 points: Birthday Dinner (Inovasi - Lake Bluff IL): Very good black fruit aromas with lingering new oak spice helping provide good perfume. Ripe flavors of black cherry and plum with vanilla and dark chocolate, then good spice emerging on moderately long finish. Less exciting and intense than I recall when tried a few years back, so I doubt this is getting any better. (5519 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
