On the nose, it showed bacon fat, black pepper and a touch of animal sweat, beneath which was subtle blackberries. The possible brettanomyces and oak artifacts were quite off-putting, compared to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines just tasted. On the palate, it was full-bodied, very spicy with medium level of grippy youthful tannin and a medium finish. I was guessing a youthful Shiraz from New World, with an incline towards South Africa. It turned out that it was a blend of 46% Grenache, 39% Shiraz and 16% Mourvedre from Barossa Valley, Australia, and the vintage 2007 was the same as the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines! Screw cap closure well-preserved the youthfulness of the wine. (686 views) | | Tasted by Pokkstar on 5/4/2010 & rated 85 points: Good example of new world GSM. Good nose and well balanced fruit. | Kaesler Producer websiteRed Rhone Blend Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.
A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
