Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Luvwine1 on 7/22/2022 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly, from a .750 still drinking well. Good fruit, dark color, popped and poured. Smoky, dark fruit-filled finish. My last bottle but exceeded expectations Smoke em if you got ‘em! (625 views)
Tasted by MvL on 2/17/2022 flawed bottle: Magnum! Notwithstanding the size of the bottle, which fed my hopes the wine would excell by now: vinegar! A pity… (823 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 2/3/2019 & rated 93 points: Deep red color. Aromas of black fruits, graphite and wood spices. Ripe, well-balanced fruit in the mouth with excellent depth and length and nicely integrated oak and tannins. Very intense and persistent on the palate. This impressive wine reminded of a very good Chateau Haut Brion. Still in sweet spot of drinking maturity. (2099 views)
Tasted by "Rhône Rider" on 12/22/2018 & rated 92 points: Rubinrød kant, svart kjerne. Parfyrmert, blomster, svarte bær, lakris. Vanvittig syre, men likevel flott balanse. Bra lengde. 1997 Foradori, Granato, Terral dego 91-92 p Dette er dritkult. Fremstår som en ungfole, og nærmer seg pensjonsalderen. (2065 views)
Tasted by CMz on 11/10/2017 & rated 92 points: Deep purple color with no signs of age in the glass. The nose was rich with dark fruit, plums and dried prunes/raisins especially; with a touch of mint. Very well integrated tannins, moderate acidity and a silky smooth mouth-feel with a long dark fruit finish that revealed tar, mint and spices. This wine is still beautiful and not showing any sign of falling off - mature, yes; but definitely still has a window of excellence ahead for bottles properly stored. (2948 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 1/28/2017 & rated 93 points: Texas Wine School, Luxury Wines of Italy Class. Decanted. Bright, medium (+) to deep ruby with some purple hues. Amazing youthful in appearance, The nose is clean, medium in intensity, with intriguing aromas of red fruit, black fruit, dried, medicinal herbs, some tar and black licorice. The nose is still developing. The palate is dry, with medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol at 13% and medium to medium (+), silky tannins. The palate is consistent with the nose, with predominantly bright pomegranate and cranberry flavors. It has a medium body, medium to medium (+) flavor intensity and length. This is a very well balanced and very well made wine, from the Campo Rotaliano area of northern Trentino. It is showing remarkably little signs of aging and is a real testament to Elisabetta Foradori's wine-making skills. (2905 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 2/25/2013 & rated 92 points: Really incredible purple color. The nose is savory with blue fruits and plums as well as granite notes. Still some itchy tannins on the wine. I loved the wine but by hour three the fruit faded a bit. I think its time to drink. (5408 views)
Tasted by PBL on 12/5/2012 & rated 92 points: From a 750ml bottle, cork looks new, only the bottom is stained black. I am surprised, the 1997 Granato is still young, dark ruby almost purple, no real signs of aging. It is clearly better than when tasted in 2005. On the nose it is a mixture of earth and eastern spices, dark fruit and light touch of prunes. Acidity is still high but otherwise all is well integrated. To the taste, more earth, dark chocolate and pan juices from roast beef. The finish is moderately long with a slightly spicey and fall vegetable flavour, hearty winter fare. Serve blind to a group and virtually nobody will identify this wine. (4685 views)
Tasted by Kirk Grant on 11/24/2012: FROM MAGNUM:
Color: Opaque ruby at the core leading to a ruby rim with very minimal bricking
Smell: Earth, dark fruits, blueberries, funk, dried Birch, potpouri, graphite, grilled meats and a hint of gun smoke
Taste: Red fruits, violets, and loganberries, lead into darker fruits, cacao, and chewing tobacco on the palate.
Overall: Outstanding!! An amazing wine that I've loved each time I've had it. I'd gladly search it out again...but wonder how the regular 750ml bottle is doing. This seemed like it could go longer from magnum...but I find myself wondering where the 750ml bottle would be given the more advanced stage this was in. (4719 views)
Tasted by Kirk Grant on 5/19/2011 & rated 95 points: From a 750ml: Cork was long and half-way saturated.
Color: Opaque Ruby
Smell: Granite, char, grilled meats, plum, blueberries, and a vast depth that is difficult to explain
Taste: Red fruit, violets, and the wine begins to trail into an array of blue and dark fruits followed by mineral notes and hints of char, oak, and sweet chewing tobacco.
Overall: One of the most complex wines I've had in awhile...certainly classic and I wish I had more! (5481 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 11/30/2010 & rated 93 points: Drank my second bottle of the six pack and its just as impressive at the first. Deep dark purple color. The nose is plums, anise, blackberry, mace and pine wood. really good length with enough acid to keep it long (5047 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 8/11/2010 & rated 89 points: Dark, purple ruby color and restrained nose of lead, wet earth and tar. Almost bitter at first, but then smoothed out. I agree with those that say that this will last for many years to come - it is dense and powerful. I am just not sure it will have the balance and fruit to be more than an enjoyable, rustic wine. (3014 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 4/18/2010 & rated 92 points: Cork was wet about 2/3 of the way up, giving me a bit of concern on how the wine would perform. This wine was slow O'd only for a couple of hours. It should have been slow O'd for a day. Still dark purple with the beginnings of some reddish tones. Nose of blackberries, leather and a bit of tar. In the mouth this wine is massive, dense and tannic. There is a lot of power here. Plenty of acidity. Big blackberry fruit, leather and tar. This wine will age effortlessly for at least ten more years. (3084 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 2/21/2009 & rated 93 points: Still super dark bright purple. Really bizarre nose with lead pencil, red berrys, pine cones, licorice and green olive. Also maybe some bell pepper but not in bad way. Still some lingering tannins and some fantastic acid that keeps the wine on track. Loved it. Will keep for years. (3190 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 11/29/2008 & rated 94 points: BLACK CHERRIES, LICORICE, AND TERRAGON IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR. NICE COMPLEXITY AND A LONG FINISH. (928 views)
Tasted by Gregory Dal Piaz on 7/14/2008 & rated 87 points: 1997 Tuscans with a pair of interlopers (NYC): While remaining dark this no longer is opaque. This opens with a smoky, gamy nose full of spicy wood tones over roasted raspberry fruit with a green fennel seed edge. Made in a weighty Medium bodied style this feels slick and polished with decent structure supporting the chewy fruit. Offering up bitter, dark berried fruit in the mouth with notes of whiskey cream, earth and stones this gains a bit of elegance and turns to dark currant tones and chocolate milk on the back end leading to a medium length finish with teroldego struggling to break through the wood tones. With dinner this remains smoky with charcoal mineral tones over a base of meaty fruit with the green fennel note gaining in intensity. Precise in the mouth with fine tannins and good acids this turns out to be a touch indistinct with it's monotonous dark fruit. The edgy Teroldego quality is lurking deep inside and blossoms for a few moments here and there but never is fully revealed. I do not think this is the best style for Teroldego but it is a solid wine. Time will tell if the fruit ever truly emerges. 2008- 2015 (4021 views)
Tasted by otisabdul on 10/27/2007 & rated 91 points: WS Wine Experience - '97 Italian Seminar (NYC): Represented on the dais by winemaker Elisabetta Foradori. From gravelly soils in northern Italy. The color is very dark and young-looking. Smoky nose. Rustic, baked blackberries, framed by mushroomy notes. Could use a little more time to smooth out. (4552 views)
Tasted by winefool on 10/27/2007 & rated 92 points: WS NYWE 1997 Italian tasting (Marriott Marquis): Opaque black purple color. Big tight reductive black fruit nose with a lifted note. Nice rich red/black fruit with coffee notes on the finish. (4043 views)
Tasted by Gregory Dal Piaz on 1/9/2007 & rated 89 points: A post Holiday dinner with coworkers (nyc): Day 1 - The nose is a bit restrained with dark, smoky notes, bit of barnyard, almost peaty, gafite and building lead pencil. With time developes notes of smoked meats, pomegranite juice, asphalt, and a nuance of roasting coffee. In the mouth the wine is very loose and unstructured at first, fully resolved tannins and good acidity, feels completely shut down, good core of fruit peaks out on the finish which is dominated by bitter balck spice and minerality, fleshes out a bit with airing, some soft tannins appear growing on the finish which is very short.
Day 2 - Still very smokey, oaky, grilled meats, morefruit but still to black. The nose begins to show some movement with several additional hours, pop goes the pomegranite, then a nuance of pollen and some dandelion greens, so there is hope, at the end of the evening there were notes of insipient blackberry jam and rare meat as well. In the mouth the wine is surprisingly elegant considering every previous experience, finish is still very short and tight with it's hints of sour red and black fruits, a subtle note of mint on the mid-palate offers up a bit of refreshing contrast. At the end of the evening notes of mineral and saffron are jioned by a bit of plummy fruit on the finish. Not a great showing, perhaps this will blossom with time but given the track record I do not expect great improvement. The Sgarzon bottlings have shown to have greater potential for development and maybe some of my hope springs from that pinnacle of Teroldego expression. (4529 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 12/20/2006 & rated 87 points: Almost inky black in color, this is a powerful, brooding wine. A bit harsh and tannic and it still tasted "closed" on the second day. I am not sure if the wine is in a backwards phase and will open in time or if it just lacks the fruit to balance the tannins. I am hoping the former and will wait awhile before the next bottle. (3433 views)
Tasted by RJ Meyer on 9/3/2006: The bottle that we consumed (1999) was almost beyond drinkable. It was tannic beyond belief and horribly disjointed. Tonight's bottle had smoothed out considerably. The tannins have integrated beautifully. The resulting wine is deep in color almost black. Heavy notes of black fruit. Well worth the wait and then some. (3690 views)
Tasted by Eric on 3/23/2006: Seattle offline: Italian wines at UNION (Seattle, WA): Barrique, tar, dusky and stalky. The palate is saturated, loaded with black fruit, an edge of acid, a serious crowd pleaser. (5476 views)

Teroldego

Teroldego A vine of northern Italy’s Trentino-Alto-Adige zone, Teroldego is thought to have arrived there from the area of Verona around the shores of Lake Garda. It was first documented by name in various works of the early 1800s, and has more recently been shown to be genetically related to the Syrah, Marzemino and Lagrein varieties. It is planted almost exclusively in the Campo Rotaliano in the Adige Valley north of Trento, and its sole appellation of origin is Teroldigo Rotaliano D.O.C.

Teroldego takes its name from its traditional method of cultivation, trained on a system of “tirelle” or wire harnesses. A cool-climate vine, it is hardy, vigorous and potentially prolific, and best suited to permeable, well drained soils. It has large, pentagonal, three-lobed leaves and the compact, elongated, pyramidal bunches support medium to small, round, blue black berries with thick, resistant, dusky skins. The fruit is low in tannin but high in aroma, color, extract, acidity, sugar and potential alcohol.

Teroldego is easily overcropped to produce bright, fresh, balanced, fruity wines to be drunk young. Its personality is transformed if yield is restricted, when it offers lush, concentrated dark stone fruit and black cherry flavors and aromas offset by smoke, herb and bitter almond notes. It is marked by a particularly fine acidic balance and complexity, and restrained oak contact rounds out its structure. Alternate names: Tiroldola, Tiraldega.
