Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.8 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Zweder on 10/7/2013: Weekly tasting group #091; A fully blind test. (@ WW): Chocolate brown color. In the bouquet chocolate and pleasant barnyard, but quite mature. On the palate tea, organic impressions, sweet spices, no fruits and completely integrated and softened tannin. Still pleasant acidity. This bottle is past its peak but it is not representative, because it has been standing upright in a shop for many years. Still a pleasure to drink if you like really mature wine, but no score from me for today. (5240 views)
Tasted by Neurowine1 on 1/22/2013 & rated 86 points: Very nice. Drinking remarkably well at this point. Very typical Pauillac characteristics of black current, toasty oak, pencil lead... There is a bit of greenery here but the character shines through and the class is evident. Tannins are still evident but I think they may outlast the fruit here. Drink up. (5250 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 2/5/2012 & rated 86 points: Fresh leather, wood, underbrush and forest berries. Slightly medicinal and with hints of green capsicums and spicy spiced plums. Actually drinking very flavorfully. Delightful to drink now (6349 views)
Tasted by VinoCasanova on 7/27/2011 & rated 87 points: red fruity nose, some greeness and green herbs, lots of smoky, toasted oak with cigarish characters. Palate- medium bodied, high acid structure, gaining substantial weight with time coming forth with red fruits, blackcurrants, cigarish oak notes, slightly tight with soft fine tannins. Nice reflection of vintage characteristics and a rather well made second wine. (6229 views)
Tasted by oakland.cory on 7/27/2011 & rated 88 points: Our second French '94 of the night. Good dark ruby color with some fine sediment. Nose of evolved Bordeaux, earth, mushroom, and then good sweet fruit on the palate. Still some fine tannins, but this has fully resolved and has fallen apart slightly. An interesting experiment given the recommended cellarability of second wines, but I would have consumed this sooner. (6435 views)
Tasted by sfqwino on 6/19/2011 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured. Tannins fully resolved. Liquorice, earth, graphite with some fruits and some herbs supporting in the background. Rather simple with a short finish but very enjoyable. Did not took the table too long to finish it off. (2952 views)
Tasted by tourette on 2/20/2011 & rated 91 points: Opened a magnum and served with french lentil soup and some hearty bread. It was just singing - I think the perfect provenance and 1.5L form factor helped.

Earth, mushrooms, tobacco, and barnyard. Medium bodied, reddish fruits, very old world. A bit of an odd bitter character and shortish finish, but otherwise far exceeded my expectations. Wish I had more. (2806 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 11/19/2010 & rated 85 points: Smokier and more robust dark tobacco leaves than the 93. Lightly bitter tea leaves lifted black cassis partial sweet fruits. Aged and drinking well. Preferred this a bit more than the 93 as was more masculine and manlier (2710 views)
Tasted by jackarmando on 8/14/2010 & rated 86 points: Past its prime. Has lovely mouthfeel and concentrated fruit flavors, but has lost much of its structure. A bit flabby and one dimensional. (2766 views)
Tasted by pmarsland on 5/13/2010 & rated 87 points: Considering it was a second wine from an indifferent year, and that the bottle may not have been properly stored (found at the bottom of a cupboard in my parents' house), it actually drank pretty well. Dark appearance, with little evidence of any browning around the edges, classic Pauillac nose, just missing a little fruit, a little concentration, and a longer finish. To my tastes, borrowing a phrase from a rather well-known reviewer, a wine to admire rather than one to enjoy perhaps, yet went well with cottage pie and still quite drinkable 24 hours later. (3465 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 6/23/2009: 1994 Bordeaux horizontal (Union Square Cafe, NYC): High toned, bright with searing acidic tannins. Harsh with a long acidic finish. Don't like much.

Tasted by cheval.jam on 2/22/2009 & rated 94 points: I did drink second wines around 300 ( up ) for last year, this year I give to RSC 94 because This 1994 is direct and get to the point,, oaky, toasty and chocolate, fruit is ripe ...smooth and round on the palate

Suitable for kind of magnum size. Perfect mature ..

a bit perfect second wine 1994 = 94 pts. (3140 views)
Tasted by magyarsvensk on 3/29/2008 & rated 87 points: Decent bouquet, lacking in power. (3818 views)
Tasted by Rob MacKay on 3/15/2008: For a second wine from a poor vintage, this was a nice surprise. Great earthy old nose with a nice ruby core color fading slightly to brick at the edges. Still quite a bit of fruit showing mid-palate but the finish is rather abrupt. (3844 views)
Tasted by jhannah27 on 3/15/2008: Nose was of smoked meat and that great old wine barnyard funk. While pushing 15 years old, this wine is still hold a good amount of sweet fruits. In fact the flavor is quite light, with nice cherry and licorice flavors. I would have hoped for a little more earth on the palate considering its age. The age did come through on the finish with flavors of raisins and prunes, almost port-like. I would imagine this wine was probably a big fruit bomb when it was released, but age has been nice to it, and it is drinking really well right now. Not to mention, how many15 year old Bordeauxs do you know of under $50? (3842 views)
Tasted by Mark on 1/13/2007 & rated 87 points: No tasting notes. Most likely past it’s ideal drinking wine. A good Bordeaux but not noteworthy.. (4072 views)
Tasted by elfez on 6/3/2006 & rated 89 points: Much better than the first bottle. A modest amount of fruit. Nicely balanced. Expired completely after only a few hours; was worthless the next morning. (4242 views)
Tasted by Tao on 12/25/2005 & rated 90 points: Barely 90 points! Tasted from a magnum! In it's plateau, don't think it will evolve anyway, but a pleasant wine to drink! Guess the bottle size is well in decline now! (3898 views)
Tasted by crazydervish on 12/2/2005 & rated 87 points: Tobacco And Cigar Box Smell present.
The Finish is long with an aromatic smokey bouquet
Took about half hour to open up but once it did it was well worth it
Thought I whiffed a slight touch of Bacon in there!?
Ready for drinking now and enjoyable. (4675 views)
Tasted by elfez on 11/13/2005 & rated 87 points: Good, but probably past its prime. Traces of black fruit were occasionally detectable. Tobacco and leather. Medium tannic still. Enjoyable, yes. Interesting, yes. Great? No. (4559 views)

This is the second wine of 2. Cru Classé Chateau Pichon Longeville Comtesse de Lalande of Pauillac.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
