Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 49 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kzkpt on 10/9/2022 & rated 88 points: On PnP, dark ruby, medium to full bodied, with quite sweet fruits and very little acid or prominent tannin. Dark fruits with some cassis but bordering on plummy. I suspect this would have been killer 10 years ago, but the va va voom has left the building. Nose consistent with the taste, with some earthy notes. Still tasty, with a decent finish.

Let's see what this is like in an hour. it could go either way, but I suspect it will become even more simple.

Update: 2 hours later, considerable improvements. Tannins and acid now more present, but still dominated by overly sweet fruits.

Next night update. Closed with plastic filter/pourer overnight. So here's all that acid that was AWOL last night, and the oversweet fruits have diminished, in favor of a thinner, more acid-dominant, mature California cab taste and nose. A bit sour on the finish. Overall a much better (but not great) wine than yesterday.

I'm normally not one to consume 2nd day wine, particularly one this old. But this improved it. Who knew? (361 views)
Tasted by nkromberg on 11/30/2019 & rated 91 points: Drank as part of a post holiday event at the house. Great color. Awesome flavor. Held up well for the age. (1124 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 8/15/2019: Napa with friends; 8/15/2019-8/18/2019 (Napa, CA): Fully mature and probably time to drink up. This is tasting very soft and accessible, red fruited with some earth and tea leaves - easy drinking. Not bad but not very complex. No need to wait on these. (1455 views)
Tasted by juicejammer on 4/2/2015 & rated 87 points: The nose presents with muted dried spearmint and bing cherry. The palette confirms the aromatics as the drying tannins provide a grippy finish. Drink now. (2407 views)
Tasted by slobak on 9/13/2014 & rated 93 points: Wow! Spicy up front with tons of dark fruit and hints of chocolate. Finish a little lacking, but otherwise delicious. Surely at the end of its window, but still worth it. (2817 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 5/7/2013 & rated 92 points: Not thrilling, just deep, dark, complex, and gorgeous. Such simple quality. OK--different story day 2! Very dirty funky as some fruit dissipates to reveal the embers underneath. Wonder if that was there, unnoticed, that first night. (3900 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 2/20/2013 & rated 92 points: Cool and settled, like a magical pool in a dark cave. Deep and dense with tobacco, black cherries, and cassis. Right out of 10 years in temperature controlled storage; did not decant; drank over a couple of hours; paired with ribeye. (3700 views)
Tasted by Brenda&John on 12/7/2012 & rated 78 points: Too old - gone bad. Pored down the drain. (3565 views)
Tasted by gavinesq on 10/20/2012 & rated 92 points: Opens with a lot of cedar and tobacco. A lot of the cedar blew off to leave black cherry and ripe plums. Decanting recommended. (2781 views)
Tasted by FPNova on 4/7/2012 & rated 90 points: Aromas of currant, blackberry & tobacco. Still nicely layered dark fruit, black currant and toast flavors with still prominent but nicely integrated tannins. (3299 views)
Tasted by mraabpfg on 1/1/2012 & rated 94 points: awesome wine everything you want in a cab (2202 views)
Tasted by jbehrendt on 11/11/2011 & rated 93 points: This was really a wonderful cab. Paired with steak. Enjoyable experience. Still has some years to go; but this was my last bottle. (2368 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/25/2011 & rated 92 points: 4th Saturday group "uptown" tasting (Joe P's): Aromas of vanilla, red fruit and cassis. Flavors of red fruit with a nice, spicy finish. Guessed Cal cab. (2981 views)
Tasted by mas01950 on 3/24/2011 & rated 83 points: A bit one-dimensional, typical $20 Napa cabernet flavor profile for $50? More structure than fruit, disappointing. (2693 views)
Tasted by tkoby11 on 3/15/2011: Over the hill sow, nice, but rather simple. (2580 views)
Tasted by TinMan on 1/30/2010 & rated 91 points: Great legs, typical CaliCab color (nice), followed by balanced but forward deep red fruit with some earth and subtle spice. This is good juice. (3130 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 5/22/2009 & rated 93 points: very young yet very balanced. should improve with age. got a 93 from WS. (3269 views)
Tasted by lpk22 on 3/13/2009 & rated 91 points: Drinking pretty well right now, but could still benefit for some additional time in the bottle. Chocolaty, oak, and red fruit, good long finish. (3648 views)
Tasted by ejca on 11/30/2008: Very good, what i expected, good solid offering. (3472 views)
Tasted by Rex66 on 10/27/2008 & rated 88 points: Flashes of blackcurrant fruit, but hidden by slightly green tannins. Don't think this will improve much. (3555 views)
Tasted by dmorris on 4/26/2008 & rated 85 points: This bottle was not nearly as good as the one I had last year which was a pop and pour. Unless I had a flawed bottle, this really needs some decant time. Came back to it after about 2 hours and there was significant improvement but still nothing special. May have been slightly corked - since I had to drink an entire bottle to let this breathe in the decanter I may be off the mark here. I think I need to open another bottle soon to see if this one was bad. (3954 views)
Tasted by stevenp22 on 12/26/2007 flawed bottle: Very nice, smooth tannis well put together. Had the last glass two days later and it had deteriorated significantly (3828 views)
Tasted by winetexan on 10/31/2007 & rated 91 points: drank with my son for Hallowine, very balanced wine, enjoyed very much (4037 views)
Tasted by lizjagla@yahoo.com on 8/10/2007 & rated 90 points: Very well balanced - tasted better as it went along. Very much enjoyed this wine. (4078 views)
Tasted by tanglenet on 6/1/2007: Decanted at 5pm and tasted. Finished by 8pm when it was really coming together. At first, sharp fruit on the nose with a lean, tight and dry tannic finish. After awhile it opens up to be a pleasing drinker. Overall impressions: a subtle and refined wine and not a fruit bomb by any means. Good. (3929 views)

2002 Pine Ridge Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville

Per the Wine Club News:
Aromas of mike chocolate, toast, vanilla, bright cherry, boysenberry and a hint of white pepper are revealed on the nose of this medium to full bodied wine. The flavors echo the bouquet with additional notes of psicy tobacco and cranberry.

Second vintage of hte Cabernet from Oakville is well balanced and teeming with luscious cherry and berry flavors. The grapes were hand-harvested in late September 2002 and marcerated on the skins for 31 days before aging 16 months in French Oak barrels. This single vineyard bottling has been lauded by Wine Spectator Weekly, declaring the wine is "deftly balanced and deliciious to drink"

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
