Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 116 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by WizardNeedsFood on 2/13/2024 & rated 92 points: This one is on the other side of the perfect window now. Short decant. Lack of structure vs other years and is going hard toward raisins and stewed plums. Fruit is gone. (331 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 7/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Good pull on cork which has held up wonderfully. Ready out of the gate. Nice fruit and balanced great. Love the fruit at 16 years. Thickness to this but just a density of extract and its not fruit forward at this stage, but has held a decent amount since bottled, or for me, last sampled in 2016. Evolved might be a better description, the way one hopes a good wine will do.
Bouquet of earth and meat and fungus or mushroom, an earthy feel. Age has done this well. Some white border or perhaps bricking in glass at rim. Legs ran medium. Looking forward to each sip. Dirty burgundy. Slightly tart on finish which last over 30 seconds. 2007 wines are real deal. (868 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 4/8/2023 & rated 92 points: With age this is quite round. Still clearly new world but with some level of finesse. (979 views)
Tasted by Drinkslogger on 2/25/2023 & rated 94 points: 30 minutes decant

Same owner as Harlan.

Nose of cherry interwoven with wood, cedar, like when you put your nose in the sound chamber of a guitar, peppercorn, flower, juniper, blackberry, blueberry, well integrated nose, nothing obtrusive. Beautiful, sweet and captivating aroma.

Cherry, licorice, thick, bright, sweet strawberry, blueberry, minerals, well structured. In a good place and ready for enjoyment. With that said, this wine still has the structure to continue to develop and improve for the next 5 - 10 years but it is already beautiful now. I wished I have more of this. (114 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 10/2/2022 & rated 91 points: There were aspects of this wine that I liked, but it did not provide much overall drinking pleasure. Earthy, plummy mature fruit, a complexity on the nose and palate. Noticeable tannins and acid and seemed slightly out of balance to me. Like perhaps it needed more time, but I am not sure the fruit would hold up. (2580 views)
Tasted by Mo Maher on 6/16/2022 & rated 96 points: Very powerful yet refined and complex with layers upon layers of primary and secondary notes on the palate. (blackberry, chocolate, cassis, pepper, and licorice)

The nose is elegant with a touch of honey, vanilla, and cedar.

It kept evolving and dancing throughout the night. (1305 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 3/19/2022 & rated 93 points: Decanted for one hour. Nose of violet, blackberry, blueberry, currant, cedar, spice and forest floor. Black and blue fruit, cocoa, licorice, cedar and spice on the palate. Very long finish. Good depth. Full bodied. Served with grilled ribeyes with a blue cheese, black truffle compound butter. (1292 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 1/9/2021 & rated 91 points: Decanted for approximately an hour...deep purple hue with slight bricking on the rim. Baked blueberries on the nose with hints of leather and perhaps a touch of cedar with medium intensity at best. On the palate the wine is bright, acidic, with medium to full body and medium fruit. The tannins are polished and well integrated. It seemed slightly out of balance between fruit and acid. This is well made wine but far from a stunner. Perhaps could have been way better earlier on or in another 3-5 years. I tend to go with the former rather than the latter. (2235 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 12/26/2020 & rated 90 points: I found this a bit faded since my previous bottle 18 months ago. My opinion was not shared by everyone in our group. Medium garnet in color with some bricking at the rim. An earthy, bordeaux like nose, consistent with my prior experience. On the palate, I found less fruit than before, rich plum, cassis and blackberry, and more leather, tobacco and a bit of cedar. Full bodied with a medium, earthy finish. (1794 views)
Tasted by Rhone Rick on 3/21/2020 & rated 91 points: I would give it another 5-10+. Better on day2 but not jump out of the glass appeal as it should. Lots of potential, aged fruit, tannins, tobacco & smoke but not ready for prime time. (2364 views)
Tasted by msuwine on 2/5/2020 & rated 93 points: This rich and layered Cabernet is settling into a more mature drinking profile, but it's at a delicious and rewarding place right now. Dark red in color; full in body; nose of baked blueberry pie, cocoa powder, wet gravel, and eucalyptus. Tastes of boysenberry, espresso grounds, prune, anise, and mulberry, with a layered and lingering finish that carries rustic tannins. 93+ for now, though it may get a second wind in another year or so. 14.5% alcohol. (3876 views)
Tasted by vpoms on 11/16/2019 & rated 93 points: Amazingly satisfying, complex with layer upon layer of amazing aromas and flavors: brumble, raisins, eucalyptus, coconut, leather, meat. Full body, high alcohol, silky smooth medium tannins. Finish is medium. Very good wine, in its prime now. Can be aged for 5-plus more years (2219 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 6/17/2019 & rated 90 points: Consistent with prior bottles, but older. Cedar, camphor, leather and earth predominated. Not much of the fruit is left. Enjoyable, but huge. Make sure to decant/let breathe for at least 30 minutes. (1803 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 6/1/2019 & rated 94 points: Rich, dark, jammy, plum, chocolate and coffee on the palate. Full bodied with a real coat your tongue feel. Long, lingering finish with well integrated but grippy tannins. A classic Bordeaux, layered feel but much richer. (1602 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 4/19/2019 & rated 92 points: 4 Reds, One Pinot Noir and three Cabernet Sauvignons. (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Nose of black berry, black cherry, and oak, same on the palate, big body, lovely floral nose did not follow through on the palate which was disappointing to me, lovely fruit with lots of soft tannins present, rich fruit, subdued fruit, and a long finish. (1642 views)
Tasted by AusTxJim on 2/14/2019 & rated 95 points: Drinking wonderfully, smooth with notes of coco and tobacco (1355 views)
Tasted by ravbik on 12/2/2018 & rated 97 points: Complex, full bodied Cabernet. Even better than few years ago . More secondary flavors and nuances coming out. (1365 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 10/7/2018 & rated 93 points: big californian; cherry fruit; some hints of anise and black licorice; smooth and long finish (1329 views)
Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 8/30/2018 & rated 92 points: Kleur: Diep robijnrood Aroma / bouquet: Een explosie van donker fruit, vooral cassis en bramen. Indrukwekkend lange afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: Grootse wijn met toekomst. Vraagt nog om enkele jaren geduld. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 17 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 92/100

Google Translate:

Color: Deep ruby red Aroma / bouquet: An explosion of dark fruit, especially cassis and blackberries. Taste / Finish: Robust and - even after 11 years still - surprisingly youthful powerhouse with a beautiful balance. Refreshing acidity, ripe but powerful tannins, concentrated. Strikingly sophisticated wood use and thus more classic than American in character. Impressively long aftertaste. General / potential: Great wine with a future. Requests patience for several years. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Taste / Finish: 17 + General / potential: 8 = 92/100 (1441 views)
Tasted by dpolzien on 7/5/2018 & rated 93 points: My first Matriarch, and really enjoyed. Agree with Quiet Lion's review from almost the same day ... will be seeking out more of these. (1622 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 7/5/2018 & rated 94 points: Pop and pour with cheese. The strength of this beauty is in its long finish of sweet acid and black cherry. With air a hint of chocolate appeared. On the palate broad shoulders with medium fruit. Aptly named for its combination of masculine and feminine. (1587 views)
Tasted by miker02 on 4/21/2018 & rated 91 points: Aired in the bottle for two hours, then decanted and aired for another hour. Reddish purple in color. Powerful fruit punch. Slightly sweet and a smooth finish. Very good! (1577 views)
Tasted by spineguy on 4/1/2018 & rated 93 points: Great structure. I am now always a huge Cali fruit forward fan but this is the reason to enjoy their wines. Drinking really well now! Perhaps 5-8 more years? (1475 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 3/2/2018 & rated 91 points: Inky purple/red. Rich, nose -- raspberries, sandalwood, cedar, chocolate. The rich mouthfeel that is a hallmark of the Harlan complex of wines. Nice long finish. (1617 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 12/26/2017 & rated 93 points: Aerated with a Vinturi and decanted for one hour. Nose of blackberry, currant, chocolate, tobacco leaf, licorice and spice. Black and red fruit, tobacco, baker’s chocolate, spice and ripe tannins on the palate. Leads to a long finish. Full bodied. BdX like. Served with a Swedish buffet. (1215 views)

BOND: A portfolio of wines that are diverse in their geographic representation and 'Grand Cru' in quality, all under the umbrella of one philosophy, one team, one mark.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
