Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Canadales on 12/3/2023: Just not that into this wine - lots of canteloupe, a bit of ginger, but not enough acidity to keep me interested. Overly sweet for my taste, prefer other sweet wines like Madeira with some backbone. (893 views)
Tasted by gparker777 on 5/27/2023 & rated 93 points: Deep golden yellow colour. Nose of pineapple, ginger, honey, apricot, marmalade. Vibrant, fresh front palate that swarms the mouth with honey, peach and pineapple. Creme brulee swirled with some tannins into a very long finish with balanced sweetness. (1764 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 8/24/2022 & rated 89 points: Sweet (2598 views)
Tasted by MrOctoberfest on 5/10/2022: Similar to the other notes here, but I think that coconut is the main note on the palate. Nice wine, not earth shattering. (2382 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 4/14/2022 & rated 92 points: WTSO Recent Wines; 3/1/2022-4/16/2022: Day 1: Just got this shipment on Wednesday and wanted to try a bottle before the sale ends on WTSO. This is a solid Sauternes for the money. Nothing off the charts but $24.99 worth a three pack. Apricots, honey suckles, minerals, sour apple and melon. Good acidity and love the half bottle as most of my off lines by design are six or less. 92 points (2752 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 2/13/2022 & rated 90 points: Medium golden colour. Peach, canned apricot, pineapple, orange peel, wild honey, Earl Grey tea, burned sugar/caramel, spice, and ethereal notes, with medium(+) acidity and very good persistence. Nice, smooth, syrupy texture. Very persistent. Other vintages are fresher, but this is hedonistic in a positive way. Full, spicy, integrated and quite seductive from day two. Almost ready; drink from 2023+. 90(+) (2495 views)
Tasted by Philbeagles on 2/5/2022 & rated 90 points: Enjoyed, but there is better out there. QPR is decent. (1674 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 11/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Medium gold. Peach, ripe pineapple, orange marmalade, almond, honey, and botrytis spice, with fresh acidity and very good persistence. Medium- to full-bodied, and medium complex, with a creamy, syrupy texture. Lightly ethereal from day four. Still needs some time. Start drinking from 2023. 90+(?) (1935 views)
Tasted by Marc F on 12/28/2018 & rated 91 points: Oog: Kristalhelder, intens, geel goud, grote viscositeit, veel tranen.
(3135 views)
Tasted by Eclipse1 on 11/12/2016 & rated 90 points: Excellent value wine, really impressed with the fruit layers and classy finish. Elegant, refined, delicate and sophisticated . (3854 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 1/7/2015 & rated 89 points: Sauternes and Stirfry: Floral, toast and lemon notes. Shows plenty of weight from the fruit but the acidity cleanses nicely. Very good. (4658 views)
Tasted by 54ver on 11/22/2014 & rated 90 points: Tasted it at winery. It was served quite cold. Full bodied, golden color, very sweet. Hadn't had a sauterne in 30 years. Pleasantly comparable to an ice wine.
Surprised to find a 1/2 bottle at an LCBO. (4236 views)
Tasted by ColinR on 9/4/2014 & rated 91 points: Deep gold; white raisins, apricots, pineapples, oranges; semi-sweet, honey, melon, pear, apple, citrus, medium body, decent acidity, lingering finish.
A variety of dried, candied and tropical fruits on the nose and palate. Slightly cloying but yummy with a toasty, lip-smacking finish. Went well with camembert. (4224 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/16/2014 & rated 92 points: With a floral, candied orange rind, vanilla and honey coated, tropical fruit nose, the wine has lift, sweetness and a delicious finish. (4041 views)
Tasted by bdlalonde on 11/3/2013 & rated 85 points: An average wine, nothing in it to make it jump out as special. Notes of toast, honey, and peach. Very acidic on the back end. (3025 views)
Tasted by mimik on 6/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Decent but not very concentrated for a Sauternes and a little light on its feet onthe finish. Good acidity and not cloying at all. Sweet Tropical aromas on the nose and palate. (2594 views)
Tasted by FastTrack on 2/2/2013 & rated 87 points: nose of toast and honey. Very sweet indeed, missing freshness, ripe botrytis evident, long but does fall of a tiny bit towards the end. (2252 views)

Château d'Arche

Producer website - Read more about Chateau d’Arche

The Château d'Arche vineyard expands over the hillsides surrounding the Sauternes village. This unique location close to the Ciron river, allows the vines to benefit from a particularly favorable micro-climate. In Autum, thick morning mists cover the Sauternes valley and are then dispersed by the afternoon sun.

Covering over 40 hectares, the Château d'Arche vineyard is planted on a variety of soils composed of 70% gravel, 20% clay and 10 % limestone. Each soil type expresses itself differently contributing to the harmonious balance of Château d'Arche wines. The gravel soil provides structure and strength while the clay-limestone soils help develop delicate aromas. The North-South plantation axis of the vineyard ensures the grapes a maximum amount of sunshine throughout the day.

A lesser-known, but equally important, fact about the renowned 1855 Classification of Bordeaux is that Sauternes and Barsac were included. Twenty-six producers were named in the Grand Cru Classé “promotion.” Château d’Yquem earned its own Premier Cru Supérieur category, 11 other châteaux were ranked as Premier Crus, and 14 more as Deuxièmes Cru. Château d’Arche lies in the latter, and their prestige is well-deserved. Founded by Henry d’Arche in 1580 and later acquired by the Counts of Arche in 1733, these wines were treasured and considered among the best in the region long before the 1855 Classification was in existence! Today, the estate has grown to 27 hectares and the historic charm still thrives with a 17th-century manor serving as the main attraction.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
