Tasted by ckilpatrick on 11/11/2016 flawed bottle: Forest floor meets wet band-aid (2602 views)
Tasted by surfcityvino on 8/5/2015: Nose: Slight oak characteristic
Palate: Surprisingly fruit forward for an Italian wine. More New World characteristic. Surprising for a "Super-Tuscan". In combination with a lack of backbone -- OK but nothing special -- even at this price point. (3396 views)
Tasted by dsjutah on 7/6/2013 & rated 85 points: I've liked this wine more in the past - may have held on to this one a bit longer than I should.

Begins with aromas of black cherry. Leather and earth on the palate, a bit more bitter on the back end than I remember. Decent finish.

I still think this is a very decent wine for the price point generally, but it's not one to cellar. Drink it early. (5307 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 3/10/2013 & rated 85 points: Didn't dig this bottle as much as the last -- seemed too smooth, creamy, and oaky. Maybe I was just in a bad mood. (5706 views)
Tasted by dsjutah on 2/11/2013 & rated 88 points: Begins with a very aromatic fruit and floral bouquet. This wine has wonderful intense aromas of black and red cherry, lavender, violet and even a hint of banana. The medium-bodied wine tastes of dark fruit flavors like blackberry and plum plus a bit of spice. Tart fruit flavors come to the forefront on the medium-long finish. Very easy to drink and even easier to enjoy. (5538 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 2/2/2013 & rated 88 points: Nice, new-worldish Tuscan. It's got good balancing acidity and some leather and iron notes to let you know its Italian roots. (3422 views)
Tasted by fatchihuahua on 10/26/2012 & rated 84 points: Simple but enjoyable nose of strawberries and plums. Quite a sweet and medium bodied but works quite well if paired correctly. We had it at the end of a meal with brie and I can see that the sweetness would perfectly complement pink duck breast. (3615 views)
Tasted by jellisaa on 10/5/2012 & rated 80 points: Decent nose with ripe fruit, plum and subtle oak. Palate is thin, texture medium-bodied, smooth tannins. Not very balanced. (2108 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 10/5/2012 & rated 80 points: Clear dark cherry red. Aromas of cherry, sour cherry, ripe red fruit, some toasty oak and a hint of clove. Smooth, round and medium-bodied palate with a touch of residual sugar trying to fill in the midpalate. Flavors of sweet ripe cherry, sour cherry and juicy blackcurrant, with toasty oak and vanilla staying in the background. Smooth, light finish with flavors of sour cherry, earth, some bitter spice and a little sweet oak.

Soft, smooth and easy red from the unsurprising, boring end of spectrum. Starts off more boring, but opens up to some depth of fruit and a bit of structure. A bit awkward and hollow on its own; needs to be paired with something to work. Too generic and vague red wine, not recommended at 11,99€. (342 views)
Tasted by Delli on 9/2/2012 & rated 87 points: I'd agree with BAM_MAN's tasting note. Not much structure here so I'd drink this now to avoid an unpleasant 'surprise' in the not so distant future. Unlikely to revisit. 5+11+14+7=87 (2071 views)
Tasted by Bam_Man on 8/4/2012 & rated 87 points: Year after year, Banfi delivers excellent value with this Tuscan. Has a very nice nose of berries, leather and hints of Sangiovese funkiness. This is medium-bodied, but nicely balanced and quite satisfying - especially if paired with anything containing red tomato sauce. The fresh finish is moderately long and fruity. Drinks like a good Chianti, with the Cabernet Sauvignon adding just a bit of structure. Very hard to beat QPR-wise when on sale for less than $9.

Tasted by rdriver on 6/25/2012 & rated 88 points: opened up very nicely over 2 days. (2231 views)
Tasted by avp on 6/6/2012: Fruity nose with fresh plum to cherry notes, baking spice and liquorice.
Medium bodied fruit driven palate with mid-level acidity and some welcomed grip. Liquorice allsorts, baking spice and a trace of some metallic herbaceousness. A bit thin from mid-palate on with sugar trying to fill it out. Mid-length.
Barely ok and definitely a bit anonymous. The perceivable sugar is a turn-off here. Serve chilled a bit. (2030 views)
Tasted by Henman on 6/2/2012 & rated 88 points: Dark fruit and hints of spices on the nose. Medium bodied, rather supple, showing nice crunchy dark fruit/berries with some hints of liquorice and spice.Smooth acidity and firm tannic grip with a slightly dusty finish.Delicious. This is solid stuff. (2052 views)
Tasted by jlangley on 4/23/2012 & rated 89 points: Good everyday wine. Great pairing for burgers. (2157 views)
Tasted by Pebsmini on 3/7/2012: Oooh, very nice (2275 views)
Tasted by paulrossi99 on 3/1/2012: Good nose nice mouth rate 88 (2424 views)
Tasted by slubgob on 2/15/2012 & rated 85 points: Color: Purple, able to see through at the edges of the glass.

Nose: Slight hint of alcohol, dark fruit of plums and prunes.

Taste: Dark fruit comes to the fore with the plums and fruits carrying through. There's a moderate tannins in the middle, which doesn't seem to impact the finish much as it lingers longer than expected. Perhaps a bit of pepper or spice?

Finish: Lingers pleasantly, although it does get into a slight argument with the tannins. Seems like this might benefit from a bit of time in the cellar, but overall quite enjoyable as is.

We paired this with rice and turkey-meatball stuffed red peppers. The wine was a bit too bold and assertive for that dish, but fared better with a bittersweet and a bitter chocolate, both about 70% cacao. The bittersweet was fruity, and brought out a bit of bitterness in the wine; the bitter was, well, more bitter and while that helped to tame the tanins it also flattened the wine out a bit too much.  Tasted by pizzasomm on 2/5/2012 & rated 83 points: nose: red berries, strawberry
taste: rich with ripe red fruit flavors, smooth drinking tannins, good length, herbal mid-palate (2315 views)
Tasted by larsrog on 10/9/2011 & rated 82 points: Dark red.
Heavyly oaked, but also some fine fruit underneath.
Drinkable and quite structured. Spicy. (2866 views)
Tasted by Tyler_at_WWD on 7/6/2011 & rated 88 points: This wine’s aroma is earthy and dusty with notes of dried cherry, dried currant, and leather showing through. A spin in the glass reveals a little more complexity and brings out aromas of black currant bush and tea box.

The palate is defined by dried black currant leaves and dried blackcurrants. There is some leather and a faint dustiness to it as well. This wine is nicely composed with good balance, certainly a food friendly option.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
