Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 4/7/2011 & rated 93 points: Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Retrospective: 1978-1987 (eVe Restaurant, Berkeley, California): Light yellow color; grapefruit, smoky, cat pea nose; rich, medium-plus bodied, tart grapefruit, tart gooseberry, smoke, lime palate with good balance and acidity; medium-plus finish (95% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillon; 10 mos. in French oak, 25% new; 14.6% alcohol) (4121 views)
Tasted by Benj on 12/28/2010 & rated 91 points: Ooh, divine! I've been on the lemon verbena recently and definitely got that here, as well as some other citrusy things and some decent minerality. A really surprisingly good SB and actually not *too* alcoholic - the most balanced SB I've had from California so far. There's some decent weight here - I'm not sure the 5% Semillon has that much influence but it can't hurt! Probably available for $30 and a stonking wine. Almost bought a bottle, which says a lot. Very highly recommended. (4579 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 9/22/2010 & rated 91 points: Constellation and SWS Cabernet Dinner (Gibson's Steakhouse - Chicago): Excellent way to start off the evening. Ripe apples, green fruit - incredible body.
Striking minerality with some light nutty notes. Really nice acidity. Balanced finish. Great wine with a tart but enjoyable finish. (4936 views)

Varietal Character

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
