Community Tasting Notes (average 88.4 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 37 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by studleytrey on 7/28/2015 & rated 88 points: Deep ruby coloring. Aromas of dark fruits, earth, pencil lead, jalapeño pepper, and dried spices. Medium to full body, medium acid, and medium+ finish, with flavors of dark fruits galore (the syrah does shine through as others have mentioned), along with some dried dark fruits and some mineral and spices. Worked well with my steak sandwich for lunch. (2414 views)
Tasted by fredfromny on 6/8/2015 & rated 90 points: This wine has aged very nicely and has good balance with a nectar-like finish. Probably at it's peak. (2221 views)
Tasted by fredfromny on 10/15/2012 & rated 90 points: A year ago this was a rather wild ride from the 25% syrah. Things have balanced out nicely. This should improve in the next 3-5 years. (4307 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 4/20/2012 & rated 88 points: A nose of dark fruit and spice, dark garnet in color. A medium to full bodied Cab, with currants, blackberries, with a pepper and spice finish, nothing special, decent. (4670 views)
Tasted by Castle Peak on 10/31/2011 & rated 84 points: Not great. Tight, crisp, and tannic. Fruit was muted and barely detectable. Plenty of structure there, just no harmony. Maybe needs more time in the bottle or extended decanting to open up. (5317 views)
Tasted by dacomovi on 10/23/2011 & rated 88 points: For the price as a follow up to a bottle of Pahlmeyer it was ok (3614 views)
Tasted by shiel on 6/26/2011 & rated 90 points: Dark deep Napa fruit. Great value. (4112 views)
Tasted by markcic on 5/30/2011 & rated 90 points: Aerated and decanted for two hours. Deep purple color, lots of fruit on the nose, the syrah really shows. good structure and finish. An extremely enjoyable wine. (2634 views)
Tasted by NJ BIG CHRIS on 4/2/2011 & rated 90 points: chocolate, black fruit, chalkiness (3129 views)
Tasted by ClubTerry on 3/3/2011 & rated 89 points: Wine improved after being open for a night. (3238 views)
Tasted by BrandrB on 2/25/2011 & rated 86 points: A nice Napa blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah. Dark purple color. Black fruit nose. Medium-full bodied palate with blackberries, tobacco. and spice. Medium length finish. Good structure throughout. Decent QPR when priced below $20. Ready to drink now. (3130 views)
Tasted by NJ BIG CHRIS on 1/15/2011 & rated 90 points: Opened bottle and drank over the course of 2 hours. Really good stuff. Drastically improves after about an hour of air time. The fruit really started to shine then. The Syrah shows through with lots of dark jammy fruits. Nice spiciness on the finish. Some people might complain about the tannins here But for me this drinking great now. I didn't get any heat here. Definately a steak wine tho. Its a very strongly flavored wine (3269 views)
Tasted by Vinacull on 1/7/2011 & rated 85 points: {ST} Decanted about 25 min. Color red with fairly dense purple and black hues, medium body. Bouquet has some sweetness of Paulaner blackberry all fruit, some dark currants. Fruit forward on the palate with same ripe dark fruits, along with some tobacco notes, spice and earth. Medium acid, substantial tannins are youthful but don't get in the way of enjoyment. Seems a little thin in the mid, and the finish is short and showing some alcohol. Pro review says this really over-delivers for $20-25, but for me in this tasting it wasn't particularly memorable, tending toward jammy and simple. I would have favored it more if it had shown some more savory characteristics in the nose and taste (e.g., meat, pepper, etc.) from the 25% Syrah in the blend. Fruity as it is, others will likely score it higher. (3328 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
