Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 33 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BHRH on 7/24/2019 & rated 89 points: Day 1 - This wine seemed upon opening like it has turned into an old lady. Deep gold color with slight orangish edge. Lots of orange peel, madrization on the nose and palate initially. Opened up later (1+ hours) to reveal some of the peach, quince and lime that you'd expect. Some bright acid on the very slightly sweet finish. If you have any of this left - urge you to decant and drink up soonest!
Day 2 - Who'd have thought that oxidation helped this immensely! Gassed and refrigerated overnight. It has turned into a somewhat racy, alsatian-representative style with plenty of acidity to offset the stone fruit and citrus. Moral of the story - decant >2 hours prior to serving. 87-90 (950 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 6/21/2017 & rated 91 points: Golden yellow. Light petrol on nose. Juicy apricot and peach flavors- this still possesses plenty of fruity qualities. This finishes with impressive levels of acidity- it needs to paired with food to be most enjoyable. (1430 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 11/26/2015 & rated 91 points: Light yellow. Hints of smoky petrol on the nose. This bone dry riesling still reads as quite young- the minerality and acidity are only just becoming better integrated with the peach and apricot toned fruit. (2080 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 7/29/2015 & rated 88 points: At an interesting stage. Very dry, with hints of petrol and apple. Mineral city. Citrusy, lengthy. The interesting thing is the notion of richness, almost a caramel note I picked up at first. But mostly dry and lean and citrus. (2174 views)
Tasted by gzim on 3/9/2014 & rated 88 points: Better showing than last bottle. Slight nose of Quince and petrol.
nice crisp finish, not a big wine, but good QPR (2844 views)
Tasted by gzim on 8/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured. nice amber tone, great nose with a touch of petrol, some quince and peach. At first the acidity was almost too much. too zingy, which blew off after 20 minutes and the fruit came front and center.
Re-bottled the 2nd half to see where it will go .. 1st of a 6 pack, but I see lots of time here. (2861 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 7/28/2013 & rated 91 points: A touch less rich and balanced than the 10/24/10 bottle. (2456 views)
Tasted by kuumies on 9/11/2012: Really rich yellow color with notable spritz right after opening. Some obvious sulfur on the nose at first, but disappeared a while after double decanting.

Day 1: Opulent and ripe, leading to a bone - in fact almost painfully - dry, acidic finish. Pike perch in a butter-white wine sauce did it best to soften the attack but still I found the wine to be extremely young and tight.

Day 2: Dry, fresh nose of citrus, mirabelle and honey. There is also still something clearly non-fruity on the nose, but instead of sulfur it's closer to petrol. On the palate rich and round with a still a bit harsh but manageable tart finish. Really clean with no extra fat, I'm thinking green apples, grapefruit, stone fruit and saline. This clearly represents an extreme style of Riesling: completely dry in a take no prisoners manner while also being very ripe. Of course, the dryness really makes the high acidity seem exponentially higher than it is. Gladly this seems like a very well crafted wine that should (and could) not be enjoyed without food, unless one is a bit masochistic when it comes to wine. (2810 views)
Tasted by paulst on 2/27/2012 & rated 87 points: Acidic and light; crusty honeyed apricot. (2765 views)
Tasted by paulst on 11/28/2011 & rated 89 points: Green apple; acidic and stoney; tart but with honey looming. (2684 views)
Tasted by paulst on 11/13/2011 & rated 92 points: Precise and intense; brackish with lots of acidity; spicy; limestone and terrior present; light layers of complex fuit - pineapple, lemon and some honey notes at times. (2279 views)
Tasted by Cappie on 10/31/2011: This one from Zind Humbrecht is definitely dry. Great acidity, smoky nose, beautiful balance. I need to buy more of these - great value at 20 dollars. (2128 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 7/16/2011 & rated 90 points: Simple, tasty classic riesling. Indice 1, so a crisply dry ZH. Plenty of zingy pear and peach flavors. (2305 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 7/2/2011 & rated 92 points: SUNSET CORNERS - It's Riesling Time!: Sunset Corners @$19.99 I like it, dry with crisp acidity. Prefer it to the 05 Turckheim. (2492 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 5/28/2011 & rated 90 points: Solid with minerals, tropical fruit and floral notes. Good concentration and medium finish. A good wine year in and year out. (2229 views)
Tasted by rjm_va on 4/24/2011 & rated 91 points: Yummy, went well with Easter ham, asparagus and even some sweet potatoes. Normally not big riesling fan but would definitely repeat this one (2361 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 11/28/2010: good stuff (2804 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 11/27/2010: Loved this wine. Great fruit and acid with a dry finish. Awesome with food. (2800 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 11/6/2010 & rated 89 points: Finishing up the remnants from the bottle opened two weeks earlier. Subtle petrol note, along with apple, pear and mineral tones. Still quite expressive. Not quite as vibrant on the palate though- nice apple and mineral tones. (2901 views)
Tasted by InternationalWineReport on 10/24/2010 & rated 90 points: There's just a subtle hint of sweetness to the luscious glazed apricot, peach and pear flavors in this elegant white. Polished, with an impressive array of zest and slate, which extend on the finish. (2943 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 10/24/2010 & rated 90 points: Pear, tropical fruit and mineral nuances. Long finish. (2994 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 10/24/2010 & rated 92 points: Light yellow color. Aromas of white flowers, beeswax, minerals and a touch of kerosine. Ripe but highly focused and structured fruit in the mouth with excellent intensity and a refreshing core of acidity. Surprisingly dry. It takes a few sips before the brain adjusts to the lack of sweetness and then the wine really begins to shine. It has probably been 7 or 8 years since I have had a ZH non-vineyard designated Riesling and that was my loss. This wine is beautifully crafted, delicious and an excellent value. (2865 views)
Tasted by gjv115 on 9/21/2010 & rated 88 points: Very dry and crisp wine. improved with some air. Nice, light fruit. Very good. (3030 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 8/6/2010 & rated 90 points: Dry; mineral, stone and apple qualities. (3302 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.
