Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 129 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jnewman77 on 7/2/2022: Served with smoked ribs; this was tasty; the nose still had a bit of oak, but followed by blackberry jam, a hint of spice, and a bit of herbs. The palate is big and the alcohol is not subtle, but it is still all in a smooth package. Good with the ribs. (691 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 6/5/2020: I don't drink much Zin these days, but this was really quite a nice example of mature zinfandel. The nose shows rich dark fruit, a bit of spice, a hint of leather, and some floral notes. The palate, while big, bold, and rich, doesn't feel too hot (just a hint of heat which I thought would be more) and has reasonable acidity. This paired quite nicely with some smoked ribs and would be a good partner for many things off the grill. (1577 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 4/12/2020: This bottle does not taste like the same bottle as its sisters. Definitely something off on this bottle. At first I thought it was corked, but there was no crescendo of TCA funk building as the wine collected air. But it consistently tasted dull and lacked focus ,,, and yes, had that TCA cardboard and wet fur aspect. The blend consists of 85% Zin, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 3% Petite Sirah and 2% Carignane. A heavy shadow of sediment surrounds the neck of the bottle. We had also pulled a Pagani ‘09 to taste along side this bottle. The ‘09 was a clear winnner. 15% alc. With pork BBQ on Covid-19 lockdown Easter day. No Recommendation due to being an off bottle. (969 views)
Tasted by jschoenau on 5/18/2019 & rated 92 points: Ready to drink (1835 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 3/1/2019 & rated 91 points: Plenty of juicy red fruit. Seems to have plenty of time left. (1972 views)
Tasted by brian przyzycki on 1/15/2019 & rated 91 points: I stand firmly behind my cellar and it's provenance. These are just starting to raisin and prune. Notably worse as the bottle was open. DRINK UP! (1740 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 12/14/2018 & rated 91 points: Splash decanted for 30 minutes and drank over next 2 hours. Huge nose of strawberry while decanting. Great example of a mature Zinfandel. Complex mix of spices and of red and dark fruits. Smooth. (1429 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 5/29/2018 & rated 91 points: Enjoyable zin, but disappointing based on my notes from one year ago (94). Perhaps, there has been some bottle variation in this wine. The fruit seemed to be drying out a bit, and the wine more one dimensional. One more bottle left in the cellar, and I'm drinking it over the next 12 months. (1517 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 3/4/2018: On the second night of the fantastic blackberry Zin short ribs, we pulled the wine actually recommended for this recipe - a Ridge Pagani. This is my first impression of the ‘08 bottling. The blend consists of 85% Zin, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 3% Petite Sirah and 2% Carignane. The rhubarb is not as dominant as I would have thought, but it does present. More bright cherry, plum and brown sugar with a few sprinkles of cinnamon and coffee. The dusty tannins are fully integrated. This is very much ready to drink and enjoy. A shadow of sediment surrounds the neck of the bottle. 15% alc. With (beef) shortribs (with a recipe from Ridge) (We had the 07 Pagani with a G&G recipe!). Recommended. (412 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 1/2/2018: PnP. Opened up quickly, but plenty of life left. No hurray. (1330 views)
Tasted by Alro on 12/27/2017 & rated 92 points: Holy smokes! Zin ages SO well when properly stored (and of course well made) (1223 views)
Tasted by btock on 7/7/2017 & rated 90 points: Fully mature zin. Still plush red fruit but at peak. Nice complexity, bit of bramble and earth, fruit more in the pomegranate and red plum zone. Drink now. (1696 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 5/19/2017 & rated 94 points: Wow, this full bodied zin is showing very well now. Deep, rich fruits, blackberries, black cherries, and hints of licorice. Still deep in color, this is a well balanced wine with a long finish. Impressive! I think this is probably at it's peak, but I'm going to wait a year or two before drinking my next bottle. No doubt that Ridge zinfandels can age... (2134 views)
Tasted by KayS on 1/8/2017 & rated 94 points: Gorgeous. Pagani Ranch has always been my favorite. Rich, smooth, so wish I had more. (2359 views)
Tasted by Bradlundquist on 1/8/2017 & rated 93 points: Finally opened my third, and last bottle of 08 Ridge Pagani Ranch. First bottle we had in 2013. We were afraid that a zin wouldnt hold up much past 5 years, so we opened the second in 2014. The wine was so powerful that I decided that the final bottle should be cellared several years. Fast forward:the wine is showing beautifully, but is at peak. The huge body and spicy, acidity I first tasted has given way to more subtle, aged Bordeaux character, but with an extra Zin kick. The tannins have smoothed, oak is toned down and more balanced. (2148 views)
Tasted by gjv115 on 12/26/2016 & rated 92 points: Pnp. Improved with air. Or I thought so. Table wasn't sure. Very popular wine. Everyone else would have scored it higher. I think it's in a good spot but could have some aging potential. I'm drinking the rest of mine. Fruit, balance, power. Got it all. (2156 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 6/27/2016: Drunk over several nights...this is surprisingly ripe to me....very full and a tad over the top for me (2736 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 4/28/2016 & rated 91 points: Dark translucent pomegranate red. Concentration. Fruity. Evolved notes of smokey cherries and raspberries, roasted coconut, POM juice, dill-garrigue, and cassis -- all of which are very attractive, but there is some weediness as well, so it misses out on a much higher score. Lots of body and an intense rendition of its aromas, quite weighty as in raspberry liqueur rather than raspberry jam, so there was a good base of tannin, and there is a lot of relief and lift to the palate. Liqueur-like length. 5 + 12+ 17 + 7 (2554 views)
Tasted by blanquito on 2/2/2016: Crazy new oak filling up the bouquet, all anise liqueur, char, and toasted coconut. Not my thing. Shame, the palate is terrific, lots of cool, silky fruit with well-judged acid. Actually pretty dry by Ridge standards with a nice tangy finish. The oak could integrate eventually, making this a lip smacking pleasure to drink. Oakphobes need to avoid for a while though. (2586 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 12/20/2015: PNP and pretty tasty and shared at a party so gone in a heartbeat (2583 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 12/6/2014 & rated 92 points: Still a deep dark garnet color. A brambly nose and flavors of blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, along with spice, black and white pepper, oak. Full bodied, rich and intense fruit. Tannins are more resolved now, but still slightly apparent. Good acid and structure. Nice finish. Still has a year or so left for appreciation. Paired nicely with hamburger with roasted mushrooms and onions. Score 92-93. (4028 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 11/20/2014 & rated 91 points: Decanted for an hour and this was best after 2. Dark Fruit and spice with medium tannins make this a really nice bottle. Had this after the 07 Lytton and I got more depth on the Pagani. (3055 views)
Tasted by jmottern on 10/5/2014 & rated 93 points: Great nose that forecast a wonderful sophisticated zinfandel mix. Complicated blueberry/strawberry fruit with a slightly sweet up-tempo finish. WOW what a nice wine!!!! (2973 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 8/21/2014 flawed bottle: Spicy fruit, but bottle was a bit corked (2762 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 8/6/2014 & rated 91 points: Last bottle of the '08 and it was a nice one. Consistent with previous notes. This has loads of red and black fruit combined with some cinnamon and spice notes, and a nice texture. This does veer toward being a bit sweet and jammy, but does not come across as over the top and alcoholic. I pairs well with BBQ. For those who tend to only like savory wines, this probably would not appeal. But very good for the style. (2934 views)

WINE CLUB NOTES: Cherry preserve nose, highlighted by red plum, dried cranberry. Appealing mix of exotic fruit and spice on entry, bright flavors enhanced by firm acidity. Structured, balanced. Very long finish.

Zinfandel

ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-Zinfandel

Pagani Ranch

The old Pagani Ranch on the east side of Sonoma Valley. 100-year-old zinfandel, petite sirah, alicaante, mataro, and carignane vines.

(Fall 2012 Ridge Wine Club notes:)

Since 1991, Ridge has made zinfandel from the old Pagani vineyard on the east-facing side of the Sonoma Valley. All the vines were planted 90 to 115 years ago.

This is a fine example of what we look for in a vineyard: low-yielding old vines, carefully tended by a quality-conscious family who, in this case, have worked the land for four generations.

The climate here is generally cooler than at Lytton Springs.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
