we had it after Keller's Morstein 2009. For me a hint fresher and more precise than the first one. Still a few years ahead. No petrol. 94 (578 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 11/19/2022 & rated 95 points: Glass: Zalto Bordeaux
Popped and poured, drunk over three days. Clear, deep glowing yellow color. Clean, pronounced and developing nose. Smoky, tobacco leaves, Amalfi citrus, ripe fruit. Very deep and complex. Simply beautiful!
On the palate dry with some residual sugar and extract sweetness. Medium+, ripe acidity. Warm, ripe fruit, Amalfi citrus, tobacco leaves, herbs and orange zests. Very salty-mineral. Amazing tension, depth and pressure. Great structure and balance. Very long, complex finish. This bottle is on its peak, but absolutely no hurry. One of the best Wittmann Morstein I had so far. 95+ (926 views)

Tasted by David Meddings on 3/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Medium yellow. Lemon confit bouquet. Round and dense. Like sucking lemon curd across a mouth of gravel. Medium bodied, long honey inflected final.

Very impressive. Balanced and complete. (1544 views)

I guessed Keller Morstein and preferred it narrowly to the keller in the same flight. Generous, rich, powerful but elegant and balanced. For me Top 3 that evening. At least 5-7 years to go. Some flintstones in the finish. 95+ (2027 views)
Tasted by m_arcon on 5/11/2019 & rated 90 points: “Ten Years After” 2009 Dry Riesling Tasting (Private Location): Even riper than the Morstein from Keller. Too ripe imo. Maybe the wine just needs more time to loose it’s fat but I´m not sure. Missing the precision. Not my wine. (1901 views)

*** just some brief notes, no full details, rating in context of the vertical tasting ***
Opened about 10h before, double decanted. Tasted blind.
Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. Very dense and dark aromas mixed with chalky mineral notes.
Dry, medium (-) ripe acidity. On the palate a beautiful mix of ripe pineapple and other stone fruit, some smokiness, lots of mineral notes, a bit of green, phenolic notes. Lots of extract and pressure, very dense and great tension, combined with a beautiful balance. Wonderful length. Seems still quite young. 92-93 (1579 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/20/2019 & rated 94 points: Regular dinner group (@ My place): Full bodied, tropical fruits, pineapple, beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness. Still a youthful wine. 93 - 94 (1423 views)
Tasted by m_arcon on 4/18/2019 & rated 92 points: Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Pre-Easter tasting (Private Location): Typical "Rheinhessen notes" of ripe pineapple, apple, ripe pear and some yellow stone fruit. Also a bit of smoke coming around. Very dense and bold nose, needs air or some more time in the bottle. On the palate also a good amount of extract but also the power of the Morstein but in this case in a bold way (if you drink a Morstein from a cooler vintage it also has the power but with more precision and vibrancy). The mineral core is there but it is rapped into a bit too much sweetness to be a great Morstein. Still on the young side. I doubt he will ever loose his baby fat but who knows. Better let your bottles sleep for another 5-10 years. (1394 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 4/18/2019 & rated 93 points: Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Pre-Easter tasting (@Private location): Tasted blind. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. Very dense and dark aromas mixed with chalky mineral notes. Needs air to develop more fruitiness (ripe pineapple).
Dry, medium+ ripe acidity. Give it 2-3+ more years. 93+ (1297 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 7/21/2018 & rated 92 points: Medium dark yellow, almost gold. Floral, orchard fruit bouquet with a mineral note. Full bodied on entry, wonderfully balanced and long. Ripe orchard fruit, citrus heavy and a strong mineral note on the final that rings out for close to a minute.

Lovely wine and a producer to follow. (1600 views)
Tasted by KCC320 on 11/27/2017 & rated 93 points: opened 3 hrs before
Nose: explosive mineral at first petrol, subtle honey underneath ,grapefruit.
Palate: touch of honey, smooth, rounded, good grapefruit and peach in mid palate, strong mineral backbone and strong acidity come at the end, with dry finished.
My friend said it was quite sweet but I would rather say it's the ripness of the fruit. Very nice dry trocken, can pair well with oyster!!! (2009 views)
Tasted by dmnq on 11/10/2017 & rated 93 points: Bought on release, aged properly. And what a wine. Not sure if I did't open it too soon. Impressive bouquet of primary fruit (tropical, cirtrus), a touch of petrol but no signs yet of tertiairy aroma's. Powerful mouthfeel with a again impressive exotic & cirtrus fruit but balanced by a solid & long mineral structure. Long aftertaste. One of the most powerful rieslings I've ever tasted. Pity that I only bought 2 bottles back in the time. (1951 views)

(1636 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/7/2017 & rated 92 points: Dinner in La Mere Germaine Chateauneuf-du-Pape with winemakers Dominique and Marie.: In the bouquet white fruits, minerals and a touch of petrol. Same impressions on the palate, good balance between acidity and sweetness and a good length. A touch of sweetness in the finish. (1976 views)

Westhofener Morstein

From the winery:
The Westhofener Morstein is a sloped vineyard, facing south. Its soil consists of sandy loam over a limestone base. Its subsoil is strongly influenced by chalky acquiferous layers which act as water veins and turn into wells in very rainy periods. The consequence is a strong humidity in the subsoil, which offers ideal conditions for the rootstock by constantly supplying it with minerals and nutrients. It is this factor which defines the mineral character of the wines from this vineyard. The 2009 Morstein Spätburgunder GG is a wonderful example of this. Dark coloured with brick-red reflexes it portraits vanilla and cherry scents aligned with light notes of spices and roasted bread. On the palate it displays a young, elegant character with hints of peanuts, which bear witness to its 18 month maturation in barriques. This wine has a wonderful creamy textured finish and can be enjoyed on its own with as much pleasure as in combination with meat dishes or strong vegetarian meals.

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)
