Great tasting Domaine Armand Rousseau

Tasting of 4 vintages of the great domaine Armand Rousseau. The tasting was in the cellar of Librije's Zusje(*). After this we had a Chef's table lunch at De Librije(***). All wines were served blind (also at the lunch) except for the mouthwasher. Neither the vintage nor the order of the wines were revealed until afterwards.

  Mouthwasher: very, very fruity. Subtle, mouthwatering. Good length, little sparkle. Nice starter.

• 1928 Chanson Père & Fils Chambertin

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

  Served blind at the Rousseau-tasting at de Librije. A very evolved nose, but surprisingly fresh in the mouth. Even some fruit there. A very, very experienced taster guessed 1978!! A great compliment for this wine for sure.

  A little darker than the Chambertin. Full, a little harsh when just in the mouth. A lot of terroir here. After a while softer. Fine. 18+

  Most purple of the flight, a lot of fruit in the nose, but also a little alcohol, also in the start of the taste. A little less long than the Chambertin, but also a fine finish. 18

  At first a little "salty" nose and a little alcoholic, a little bitter. This was undoubtedly influenced by the previous flight (2007), because that year is só fruity. This is more built on minerality and terroir. After more than an hour this really showed it's worth. Beautiful wine. 18

  Dense, fine nose. A lot of terroir here, rich. A little darker than the Chambertin, more minerality as well. Very broad, but not quite so powerful. This wine also needed a lot of time. After more than an hour, this was at least on the level of the Chambertin 2007, but in fact a more typical wine, more terroir. This still needs time. Great class. 18,5

  Very fruity and mineral nose, a little "warm", ripe fruit. A little lighter structured than the Clos-St-Jacques(!) and Clos-de-Beze. After an hour a little drying out. It could not quite confirm the first impression, but still a fine wine. 18+

  This was the revelation of the tasting. I did not like many 2003 Burgs I had so far, but this is a very, very fine glass. It has good red fruit. A complete wine, greatness in the making? Nevertheless I devaluated it after an hour. My first score was 19,5, but like the Chambertin and Clos-St-Jacques it evolves to a kind of "dryness". I wonder how this will evolve. Some domaines in Bourgogne say 2003 is a year like 1947 that needed decades to really show it's worth. Could be, so far I'm not convinced. 19+

  A little "milky" nose. Quite sour after the near-sweet 2003 flight. But this has very much terroir and length. But a step down from Chambertin and Clos-de-Beze. Nevertheless a very fine wine. 19

  Very full, complex nose. This seems to be the least evolved of the flight. I guess this has an excellent, perhaps great future. The fruit is just excellent and in complete harmony with the minerality. Yes, the balance of this wine is impaccable. Very lovely. 19,5

  Quite evolved nose (surprisingly!). Considerable length, but in the mouth so rich, velvety. Superb wine. Great class. Now as highly rated as the Clos-de-Beze, but I wonder which one has the greater future. As for now, I would guess the Clos-de-Beze, but with these wines you never know. 19,5

  Great wine, near grand-cru level for Raveneau. This means it definitely has grand-cru level at any rate for other winemakers. Great length. Very fine wine.

  At Chef's table at De Librije this was served next to lobster. Hmmm, I'm not sure that was a good idea. It is definitely a fine wine, certainly for 2003. Very transparent style.
