Introduction

We hosted an Indonesian Rijstaffel at our home with a group of wine friends. Excellent food, wine, and fun.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Ricard Touraine Pierre à Feu

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine

Wife opened for cooking (inspired choice), then said wow this is really good white wine. She's right. 89-90

  • NV Pierre Moncuit Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Pierre Moncuit-Delos Blanc de Blancs Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

I'm really pleased with this Champagne. I'm scoring on high end of CT range, but this just really seems to hit my sweet spot I guess. Tiny bubbles exploding into a vigorous mousse. Apples, yeasty rolls, quince, touch of lime, and a great minerally core that pulls it together. Pretty dry. Long, fine finish. Delightful and delicious.

I had this a few weeks ago at a sparkling event where I tasted about 60 premium and value sparklers (excluding luxury level), and this was my favorite in direct comparison so I bought a half dozen. On the first full bottle I am more than happy with that purchase. Served as a reception wine for an event with some wine geek friends.

  • 2007 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Gelber Muskateller 89 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

Like someone's comment on the 2004, this is not a sweet wine. This one in fact was approaching muscadet dryness. Extemely floral aromatics set the tone, then it's crisp oyster shell dry.

  • 2008 Andre Scherer Gewurztraminer 88 Points

    France, Alsace

Nice gewurz character. with jasmine and lychees. A bit plump. Lovely fit with our Rijstaffel.

  • 2008 Albert Mann Gewurztraminer 70 Points

    France, Alsace

Another gewurz with our Rijstaffel. Unfortunately this one was quite disappointing. Some floral aromatics, but just did not seem pure or clean. Something a touch bitter on the palate as well. Short, weedy finish. Hmmm, ten people at the event and three times as much left in this bottle as any other.

  • 2007 Damien Laureau Savennières Les Genêts 87 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Not what I was expecting from this having had the (04) La Ouvrage and quite loved it. Nose is pretty restrained, but has some clover flowers and paraffin. Has a medium plus body, then surprises with not delivering much on the palate. Has this kind of non-descript dry, paraffin thing that persists with a relatively long finish. Has some acidic structure and feels young, so this might well settle in and deliver more with time. Had with a group for an Indonesian Rijstaffel - theoretically a great choice, but this bottle didn't perform as hoped.

  • 2003 S.A. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Rusty may have been late to the Rijstaffel party, but his Riesling did it's part to make up for it. Peach, orange blossom, honeysuckle. Round and unctuous, lacking a bit on the acidity, but worked very well with the multitudinous spices. From a most impressive 1.5L. Not inherently remarkable, but gets benefit of the doubt point to cross to 90 just because of the frequent urge to refill the glass - hard to argue with that.

  • 1989 Weingut Johannishof (H.H. Eser) Johannisberger Klaus Riesling Spätlese 88 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

Served with a group we hosted for a Rijstaffel. Deep golden color. Has a very lovely integrated nose of peach, petrol, lime, flowers, and honey. Seemed Mosel-like. Did not live up to its nose on the palate. Light medium body. Has some tart citrus/peach notions, but fruit drops off. Much better on the sniff than the swallow.

  • 2005 Domaine La Garrigue Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Romaine 83 Points

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

Rather a lot of Brett on this, and more tannins than I remember from last having probably two years ago. Hard to figure it being an 05. Anyway, brambly fruit and herbs really struggling to show through, especially the barnyard components, even after decanting. Previous ones have been much better.

  • 2008 Paul Lato Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard 96 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Decanted about and hour then double decanted back into bottle and corked about 5 hours before serving. Color is an almost electric magenta. During decanting, just immensely intense aromas of raspberry liqueur, blueberry, blackberry. These are present on serving, with gorgeous baking spices, camphor, some menthol. Although the barrel sample I had was even better, this shortly after release exhibits such amazing purity and intensity that just etches itself into your palate. Spectacular wine.

  • NV Vincent Carre Champagne Brut Rosé 90 Points

    France, Champagne

From an admirably sabered bottle from Elizabeth. Lots of strawberry, a bit on the green side. Tart, hint of chalkiness. Very nice.
