Introduction

To celebrate my 30th Birthday two great friends came into town from Washington DC, so we all decided to have a nice dinner out. As I usually do when there, we let the kitchen cook for us. The food was outstanding as always.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • NV Gaston Chiquet Champagne Premier Cru Tradition Brut

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Yeasty, lemony aromatics. Toasty palate with nice citrus notes. Nice Champagne.

  • 2005 Henri Boillot Corton-Charlemagne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Lighter straw color. Aromatics of ripe, juicy lemon, crushed stone, white flowers, oyster shell. Rich, medium bodied palate with lemon custard flavors and a bit of vanilla. Moderate finish. Quite youthful. Very nice wine.

  • 1999 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Opened about a half hour before drinking and served alongside the 1997 Roumier Amoureuses. Less giving on the nose than the Roumier, but with some coaxing aromas of ripe red berries and violets came from the glass. Some crushed stone and earth as well. Palate was more giving than the last time I had this, but it still is not fully open. Firm mineral backbone with beautiful acidity. Long finish with lots of grip. Still has quite a bit of life ahead of it and it is only going to get better. Gorgeous wine.

  • 1997 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Popped and poured. Served alongside the 1999 Mugnier Amoureuses. Spicy, seductive nose of dark berries and flowers. Ripe, yet lean fruit on the medium bodied palate. Lots of spice throughout. Great balance with a long finish. From time to time throughout the course of the evening, the wine seemed to shut down, but then open back up again. Great to follow through the evening, unfortunately I do not have another bottle. I feel this definitely has some life ahead of it, however I don't see it getting much better.

  • 1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Opened about two hours before trying, but I can't remember if it was decanted or not. Powerful, enticing aromatics of ripe dark berries, roasted game and earth. Beautiful spice. Dark berries on the medium plus bodied palate as well. Firm mineral backbone with great acidity. Long, gripping finish. Perfectly balanced. I'm hoping to save my last bottle for at least another 5 years.

  • 2001 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile Vendanges Tardives

    France, Alsace

From 375ml. Petrol notes with orange blossoms and a touch of honey. Same notes on the palate as well. Mineral notes throughout too. Not overly sweet, great balance, medium minus weight on the palate. Lengthy finish. Very nice.
