Introduction

I have been wanting to travel to Town House for quite awhile now and finally decided to make it happen for my 30th birthday. Two great friends joined us for the long drive from Chicago. Chefs John and Karen (whom I worked with at Charlie Trotter's) decided to cook for us. The one word that keeps coming to mind is WOW. Definitely one of the best meals I have had anywhere in the world. To anyone reading this that has thought about going, but was put off by the drive to get there, do not let that deter you. Dinner there is absolutely worth whatever travel you need to go through.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

We opted to do wine pairing with the various courses and these bottles were all extras I shipped in for them to use where ever they thought it would fit. While I do not have a list of all the exact pairings they used, they were pretty spot on, including a sake that they infuse in house with yuzu and flowers. Absolutely delicious stuff.

  • 2004 Vincent Dancer Chevalier-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Light yellow color. Aromatic nose of lemon peel, white flowers, vanilla, and a touch of hazelnut. Crushed stone and a touch of fern. Somewhat powerful palate with good extract. Medium weight and finish. Very good.

  • 1996 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Decanted and enjoyed over the course of 4 hours. Dark red/almost black fruits on the nose with a good dollop of wet earth, crushed stone, and brown spice. Palate was a bit firm from the start and needed a couple hours to open up. Dark raspberry and cherry with the same brown spices and earth notes. Leather notes. Firm mineral backbone. Great acidity throughout. Long finish.

  • 2000 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Decanted and consumed over the course of 4 hours. Not as powerful aromatics as I remember from last time. Darker red cherry and berry on the nose with pretty floral and an alluring clove note. Fruit forward, medium bodied palate with a firm mineral backbone. Medium plus finish with great spice throughout. Very nice wine that still has quite a bit of time remaining.

  • 1949 Château Cheval Blanc

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

From half bottle that was recorked 10/10/79. Popped and poured. Dried cherries, cocoa, bits of truffle and smoke on the nose with some crushed stone as well. Many of the same notes on the palate, but slightly leaner than I hoped. Lighter bodied palate with a moderate finish. Enjoyable, but not the best of these 375mls I've had. Acidity was more in check with this particular bottle.

  • 1983 Château Rieussec

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

750ml. Consistent notes with the bottle had in June. Delicious, but I don't see any room for improvement.

Thank you John, Karen, Charlie and the rest of the staff at Town House, along with Deanna, Matt, and Brooklyn. A fantastic weekend and I cannot wait to go back.
