Austrian Riesling 2010

Introduction

I recently bought a bunch of Austrian Rieslings from the 2010 vintage (all very highly rated by Falstaff magazine - with the exception of one unrated wine (from Kroiss) added later - and well-priced at around Euro 15 to 20 per bottle), and thought I'd drink them over a concentrated period of time so as to compare and contrast. (And to stock up on my favourites amongst them.) I'll add to the event list as I taste them.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2010 Weingut Stadt Krems Riesling Grillenparz 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

    (9/14/2011)

Quite golden in colour for such a young wine (but pale gold). Ripe but delicate nose with exotic fruits (pineapple, hint of lychee) and floral notes; some clove and mace spice too. Flavoursome, with a nice lemony finish, but (as yet) rather open-knit and lacking a bit in definition. Hopefully will develop some extra dimensions in time.

  • 2010 Buchegger Riesling Tiefenthal 86 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

    (9/15/2011)

Bright pale gold, green tinged. Ripe but yet delicate aroma profile, with lime, apricot and papaya. A bit dilute on the palate, lacking a bit of assertiveness, but nice lime notes on a lively and reasonably lengthy finish. Nice enough, but not one to rush back to.

  • 2010 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Reserve Gaisberg 89 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

    (9/18/2011)

Pale golden, a bit of fizz at first, but soon cleared up. Crisp, fresh lime and apples on the nose, with a background of almonds and marzipan. Powerful and clean-cut in the mouth, with some zingy acidity. Tasty, but more admirable than lovable as yet.

  • 2010 Kroiss Riesling Hackenberg 88 Points

    Austria, Wien

    (9/28/2011)

Aromatic, crisp and fruity, with pronounced lime, green apples and a nice underlying minerality. Forward and attractive in the mouth, with a good bit of zing. Very nice for the price point (c Eur 11). May not be for the long term, but very nice to drink now.

  • 2010 Nigl Riesling Senftenberger Piri 92 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

    (10/2/2011)

Pale white gold; bright. Gorgeous nose of zingy lime, lemon sherbet, sweet tropical fruits (pineapple, mango) and a bit of steeliness and minerality too. Nicely balanced and very more-ish on the palate. Long finish.

  • 2010 Stift Göttweig Riesling Reserve Silberbichl Kremstal 90 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

    (10/19/2011)

Pale yellow gold. Thickly textured aromatic profile, freshening up with some time, with banana, green apples, mango and papaya. Ripe and flavoursome on the palate, with a yeasty undertow, balanced with some zingy acidity. Impressive and pleasing (though not as beguiling as some).

  • 2010 Jurtschitsch Riesling Loiserberg 91 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

    (10/22/2011)

Exuberantly fruity wine on the nose, with sweet red apples, peaches and pears. A nice lightness of touch on the palate, and good balance between fruit and acidity, with a persistent, gently fading finish. Very pale gold in colour. Exceptionally nice wine to drink now, but does it have the stuffing for the long haul?

  • 2010 Nikolaihof Riesling Federspiel Vom Stein 91 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (11/17/2011)

Nicely perfumed, floral, with a lovely Chablis-like steeliness and minerality. Good grip on the palate, honeyed, with lemon and lime, and a pleasing austerity. Good finish. Clean and bright pale-gold appearance.

  • 2010 Mayer am Pfarrplatz Riesling Nußberg 85 Points

    Austria, Wien

    (11/22/2011)

Steely on the nose, with some intruiging floral and white peach notes developing in the couple of days after opening. A little bit nondescript on the palate, with mildly mouthpuckering acidity, and something of a sugar water finish. Overall, not bad, but not one to rush back to.
