Introduction

After Blair and I, along with Drew's help, moved a bunch of our wine from our old storage place to Drew's fantastic new facility (13C Wine Storage), we were all thirsty and decided to rendezvous at my place to have a casual dinner and pull a few corks. When Drew and Blair each showed up with two bottles in hand, I knew it was going to be a good night. Turned out to be a Burgundy dominant evening (par for the course around here), but for me the wine of the night was Drew’s ’98 Clape.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

At first this was shy on the nose not giving up too much but after being opened for around an hour began to sing with classic Chablis notes of lemon, lime, salinity, stones and minerality. In the mouth this was medium bodied with good acidity with a crisp, fresh and sharp framework. Airy and delicate and not the typical succulent /round profile I usually find in Preuses. This is drinking so well right now but it’s clearly still very young and barring premox, this has 5+ years of great drinking ahead of it. Excellent. 92+

  • 2001 Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Medium yellow colour and a bit darker than it probably should be and the nose confirmed what the colour had indicated: this bottle was slightly advanced. Aromas of ripe apple, some honey and tropical notes but no sherry notes. While the nose wasn’t fresh, the palate certainly was with a rich and full mouthfeel backed by vibrant acidity. Blair commented this bottle was more advanced than his previous bottle and wasn’t as good either, but either way, this drink quite nicely and was far from shot. Excellent.

  • 2009 Domaine De Belair Pouilly-Fumé 87 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

Tropical profile with notes of lychee and guava. This doesn’t have the acid that I would expect. Very tasty and enjoyable but just out classed by the previous two whites. Good.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Coche-Dury Auxey-Duresses Rouge 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses

Popped and poured and singing right from the first moment with ripe (but Burgundian) pinot fruit, Asian spice and hints of sous-bois. In the mouth dark cherries dominate with a ripe yet elegant profile, great acidity, fine tannins and a lengthy finish. As good as this is now, its best days are ahead of it. Give this 3-5 years. Punches well above its weight. Excellent. 91+

  • 2003 Domaine des Perdrix Vosne-Romanée 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Very floral and aromatic on the nose with dark cherry and berry notes with traces of spice. Very youthful on the palate, black fruited and rich with average acidity and length. Silky and easygoing, this is recognizable as Burgundy, but it could be from any village and would be very tough to peg as VR. Dark, rich, ripe and very young. Needs a few years. Very good. 88+

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Wow, this nose rocks! Funky, meaty, bell pepper and red fruits jump from the glass with classic Cornas typicity. Entry is smooth and shockingly polished but then firms up and finishes with beautifully rustic and old school structure. Firm tannins with a long red fruited and meaty finish. I love this wine for its purity and transparency. While it’s great to drink now, it has a long and bright future. Excellent. 92+

  • 1997 Joseph Drouhin Côte de Beaune 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune

Nice nose showing ripe fruit, earth and hints of funk. Lighter in the mouth with dark pinot fruit, drying and mainly resolved tannins and adequate acidity. Delicate on the palate yet still showing some ’97 character. This is fully mature. Drink now. Very good.
