Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2010 Failla Viognier Alban Estate Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

Very strange, but this wine was the first one we drank and pretty much the WOTN. No one could guess what it was. Has a lot of Chard attributes going on with butter on the nose, and some crushed stone in the background. A really great effort and a special white wine. Hard to get, but worth the effort. Should age well over the coming two years.

  • 2006 Adelina Grenache 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Decanted for 2 hours. Drank blind (except me) and there were some zin guesses. There is a hint of paint thiner on the nose, but not strong enough to offend. The fruit was fairly muted on this wine which made it difficult to guess its origin as Australia. An interesting wine. 72 cases made.

  • 2010 Failla Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

This wine was decanted for 3+ hours. It is a pretty dark Pinot and still brooding well after it was released from the bottle. The fruit is straight up in your face. You can smell it and taste it. It would be nice to see the sugar move a little bit into the background on this wine. My only nit pick on the wine is that the sugar is almost too prominent. Looking forward to trying again in a year or two or three.

  • 1989 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Decanted for over 4 hours. You can taste the obvious age. A lot of leather going on the nose. Some earth. A strong wine and seems like it has some additional years ahead of it. A friend drank it last year and said it was almost unapproachable. With a 2+ hour decant, this wine is fine to drink.

  • 2003 Italics Winegrowers Thirteen Appellations 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This wine is in a good spot. Dark as ink and tons of fruit. Not to fruit bomby, but might hit some purists the wrong way. There was not a lot of thought that this wine might be French. It pretty much screams new world wine.

Here are the components - The 2003 Thirteen is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 8% Petite Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The 75% cab is a little surprising as most thought it was heavier on the other components.

  • 2001 Williams Selyem Gewürztraminer Late Harvest Vista Verde Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, San Benito County

This was a great finish to the night. Tons of apricot in this one. The color is wonderful and this wine is singing at this point. Not sure but would guess that it has several years ahead of it. Wish I had more of it.
