Nicolas's

A gathering at Nicolas's for our Wine & Dine session, the theme of the night was Nuits Saint Georges. Very nice cooking (the truffle pearls with egg were amazing, as well as the sous vide pork), and great hospitality as usual.
It was very interesting to compare the same vintage from 2 great producers (2007 Cheviillon and Mugnier), further asserting that 2007 is ready, and not overly complex.
It was also my first encounter with Chevillon, and I really like the style and looking forward to drink more of the wines of this producer.
2001 J.M. Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasted blind.
Nice rich nose, with some integrated wood, and some lemon, plus a bit of animal character ( slight reduction?) - or something similar that I could not exactly pinpoint.
Quite rich and broad, slightly troubled golden color, and I could detect some not well integrated alcohol. Very well made, and quality material, but somehow does not speak to me.
K. detected an aged Burgundy, I thought it was much younger from a ripe vintage (like 2009).

2007 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Similar to previous notes. Elegant and feminine. I really like this wine. It would just need the complexity to be turned up a notch to be a top wine. Delicate, perfumy. To drink now.

2007 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
So different from Clos de la Marechale 07 drank side by side. Here the nose is much more masculine, with some leather and musc, with pretty dark fruit.
The palate is much more restrained and does not match entirely the expectation of the masculine nose. Such a lovely style, round, very good, with a wonderful wrapping acidity.

2002 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Wow, this is the 2007 with greater intensity. Add a bit more pruney smell to it, but all the same components of the 2007's Vaucrains nose are there.
Very interesting to compare side by side. The 2007 was more linear in terms of intensity, but the 2002 was more like an explosion followed by a soft decline.

2002 Domaine Rion Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillières 86 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Mmm it suffered the comparison with the Chevillon 02 Vaucrains that was before. It seemed a bit disjoint and did not seemed well balanced. Might have been OK by itself.

2006 Bouchard Père et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 87 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Fruity good, no sign of tertiary notes here. More Beaune than Nuits. Not very complex, and definitely on the fruit side right now
