Introduction

Wanted to get down to the event much earlier, but was stuck in Dallas Friday and Saturday morning. Missed the Friday tasting, and the Saturday afternoon tasting, but got there for Saturday night, and really enjoyed it! Great batch of wines!

Flight 1 - Champagne (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Dom Pérignon Champagne 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Crisp, floral, citrus, notes of honeysuckle, lychee, honey, and wildflowers. Smooth, silky, really quite enjoyable. Good acidity that shows this one may have some more maturing to go. Drink now, or hold over the next several years prior to opening. May have a long life ahead of it operating at a high level.

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Sweet, smooth, lots of wildflowers, with honeysuckle, and honey notes. Less acidic and less citrus notes than the 2000. Extremely smooth, approachable, just a hint of yeast and toast. Best Dom tasted out of the '00, '02, and '03 this weekend. Absolutely fantastic effort!

  • 2003 Dom Pérignon Champagne 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Much more yeasty than either the 2000 or the 2002. Yeasty, very dry, but a little buttery / oaky. More notes of Lychee than either the 2000 or the 2002. Muted, with even a little hint of white pepper on the very end of the palate. Still a great wine, but my least favorite out of the lineup of '00, '02, and '03. Just doesn't seem quite as refined as the others.

Flight 2 - Whites (4 Notes)

Flight 3 - Reds (8 Notes)

  • 2007 Littorai Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Somewhat astringent on the front of the palate. A bit sweeter than you would expect. Very fruit forward. Blueberry, and blackberry. Seems like this will drink well and likely improve over the coming few years.

  • 1982 Hanzell Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Exceptionally well balanced. Smooth, full of cigar box, cedar, pepper, and with just the right amount of tannin and fruit for a wine this age. Not hugely fruity (still got some from this tasting though), but exactly what a well-aged Cab should be--powerful, spicy, yet refined and graceful. Will last for several more years, but can certainly drink now.

  • 2003 Château L'Evangile 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Sweet, spicy, tannic, astringent. Blackberry, spicebox, oak, cedar, cigar-box, white pepper. Powerful. Will improve even more with age, and imagine it will become extremely refined in its old age. Has the bones to make it, and become great! Hold.

  • 1996 Château L'Evangile 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Full of almonds, walnuts, black fruits, blackberries, smooth tannic structure. And has the acidity and structure to last for another 15 years. Has not yet plateau'd I don't believe, but will be there in 2-3 years more than likely, and will continue as an excellent drinker for some time thereafter.

  • 1988 Château Meyney 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Enormous amounts of blood, roast beef, iron, mushroom, vegetal, spice and cigar box, and all things old-school, well-aged bordeaux should be. Not a lot of fruit left on this one (if any) but that's perfectly ok. Enjoyable. Drink now.

  • 1998 Château Calon-Ségur 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Nutmeg, roasted meat, white pepper, cedar, lots of carmelized onion and green pepper. But still a nice amount of finesse. Drinking really well, and imagine it will continue to do so for some time in the future. Smooth, and getting to that silky earthiness that well-aged bordeaux exhibits.

  • 1997 Château Léoville Barton 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Notes of meat, white pepper, oak and mushroom. Very tannic and still astringent. But after about 2 1/2 hours of slow oxidation, this has really found its own. Drinking superbly right now. Great meaty and very earthy essence. This will probably improve slightly over the next 2-3 years, and then plateau for quite a while thereafter.

  • 2007 Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Notes of mushroom and forest floor on the nose. Roses, blackberry, and some truffle notes. Smooth, without much tannin. Delicious.

Closing

Was definitely a great event, and was sad I couldn't be involved in the other two tastings. But the dinner we were there for was excellent, with wonderful wines shining all the way around!
