Introduction

It's been a while since we've had a good old fashioned boy's night... with roasted pork loin roast, scalloped potatoes, and glazed carrots it felt like the "good old" days for a bit.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2011 Angel Camp Vineyards Pinot Noir 90 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

this wine grew on me as the night went on... very light color... very aromatic with loads of tart raspberry and flowers... not a lot of new oak i could detect. on the palate, very high acidity, a midpalate that got fleshy with air and was always light on its feet, low tannins and alcohol. Very well balanced wine with good length, very good intensity, good complexity. Loads of finesse, very fine texture, great expression of Anderson Valley. Decanting fattened this wine up nicely.

  • 2010 Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir San Andreas Fault 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

I was really impressed with this wine... light color, very aromatic with lots of dark fruits, exotic spices, and flowers. On the palate the wine has high acidity, a fleshy yet light midpalate, moderate tannins, low alcohol. Very well balanced wine with very good length, intensity... ok complexity though its pretty young. Wine has very nice finesse, a fine texture, expresses its new worldness quite well. one of my favorites of the night.

  • 2010 Knez Winery Pinot Noir Demuth Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

cloudy, very light color. aromatically this wine is quite pretty with minerals, flowers, tart raspberry... judiciously oaked. on the palate the wine has high acidity, nice flesh on the midpalate, some tannins, low alcohol. Very well balanced wine with ok to good length, very good intensity and complexity for its age. Loads of finesse, a fine texture, great expression of place. Very similar to the Angel Camp in style... was a bit tighter and I sense there is more there that will show up with time.

  • 2007 Dehlinger Pinot Noir Estate 86 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Like the Lioco, this wine felt hot in comparison to the other pinot's present... moderate depth of color, very aromatic with lots of that pretty RRV cherry... nicely integrated spices from oak. On the palate moderate acidity, broad midpalate, moderate tannins, noticeable alcohol. Ok balance (alcohol better balanced that Lioco), good length, great intensity, ok complexity. Not a lot of finesse, a fine, but full texture, very good expression of place.

  • 2006 Lioco Pinot Noir Michaud 84 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Chalone

I suppose I'm a descenting opinion on this wine... dark color, very aromatic with lots of cola and baking spices. On the palate the wine has moderate acidity, a broad and rich midpalate, moderate oak tannins, high alcohol. Wine is a bit out of balance from the high alcohol, good length, great intensity, ok complexity. Not a lot of finesse, texture impaired by alcohol and oak tannins, ok expression of place. In the bottom three of the night.

  • 2004 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

deep color. aromatically shows it cru-ness quite well with that pitty cherry/kirsch aromas with plenty of earth/minerality and well integrated new oak. on the palate high acidity, great depth on the midpalate, firm tannins, low alcohol. Very well balanced wine, great length, good intensity, most complexity of any wine of the night. Loads of finesse, great texture, classic expression of place. this was drinking really well.

Closing

Decent wines tonight... the lighter styled California wines were really nice and stood in distinct contrast to the "warmer" bottles. The lone Burgundy, while not a stunner, showed its pedigre bringing a level of depth and complexity even the best Californian wines didn't really have.
