Introduction

The loose theme was California Cabernet Sauvignon for the reds. We knew there would be one pirate bottle.
We had a wonderful fish salad as an appetizer then great beef cheeks with the reds, to finish with cheese and tea cake.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2001 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese 88 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Quite round and typical Mosel riesling characteristics. Good, but missing extra cut and vivacity to be great. Very nice pairing with fresh ricotta and truffle honey, and good way to start a dinner.

  • 1986 Fiorano (Boncompagni Ludovisi) Sémillon Botte 39 Vino da Tavola 93 Points

    Italy, Latium, Vino da Tavola

The wine has a lot of flurry sediments, causing the wine to have a cloudy orange look even after letting the bottle standing for a day.
A nose a bit smokey, stone, some rubber?. It had a flat strict nose but then start making wave through the end of the bottle, with some white fruit appearing.
The palate starts somehow bitter than does a backflip to show an acidic profile with great finish. This wine is special.

  • 1985 William Hill Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Perfectly mature wine. I have little experience with Cali Cabs, but if I did not know what it was I would not have guessed it was California. The structure profile is not Bordeaux though, and it has some green notes to it that reminds me of some old Chinon. It has a serious and strict aspect to it. The low alcohol makes it very digest and easy to drink. Very good with beef cheeks.

  • 2002 Tertre Rôteboeuf 87 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Ripe fruit nose (C. mentioned shiraz similarities). We knew there might have been one Cab not from California, but I felt this was very new world, quite jammy, with soft tannins, lacking acidity.
It was a surprise to see it as a St Emilion. I can see the interest in the wine but it was so different and opposite of the 85 Napa Cab before, that it did not work much for me.

  • 2007 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Served blind. The wine showed a wonderfull deep dark nose. Tannins were very soft, quite ripe profile with dark fruits meanwhile balanced. I was quite shocked when I learned this was a 100 points bottle. The wine is still a baby. It was opened only 2 hours before drinking and clearly needed more time to open up.
