Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2012 Bodegas Merencio Treixadura Ribeiro

    Spain, Galicia, Ribeiro

    (6/30/2015)

Quite sulphurous at first, and never really shook off a slight eggy hint on the nose. But there was a nice apply freshness about this. Mixed impressions on this one.

  • 2014 Telmo Rodríguez Rueda Basa Blanco

    Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda

    (7/2/2015)

Open accessible quaffer with delicate fruit (peach, apricot) and floral notes, and without the slight bitterness that can sometimes mar simple Ruedas. At Eur 7,25, VGV.

  • 2012 Anima Negra ÀN/2 92 Points

Spain, Balearic Islands, Vi de La Tierra Mallorca

    (6/29/2015)

Something quite new and different for me. Lighter and fresher than most Spanish wines (though still medium bodied); somehow more Italian with its dusty, floor polish notes above plum and cherry fruit. Very enjoyable indeed and, at Eur 11,95, VGV.

  • 2011 Celler del Roure Valencia Les Alcusses

    Spain, Valencia

    (6/30/2015)

Impressive wine at this price point. Dark, brooding, extracted, austere. - though perhaps too much so for my palate, not enough going on. Have to say that it's still GV though. 14.5%.

  • 2012 Bodegas Mitarte Rioja Syc de Mitarte

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

    (6/30/2015)

Big, bold, dark toned wine. Atypical for Rioja, more of a Southern feel with its black treacle and violets. Not sure it's for me, though I can see others responding more enthusiastically.

  • 2011 Bodega Mustiguillo El Terrerazo Finca Terrerazo 90 Points

    Spain, Valencia, El Terrerazo

    (7/1/2015)

100% Bobal. Has a refreshing lightness of touch for a wine from so far South. Nice sweet red fruit profile. Not tried under the best of circumstances so worth another look.

  • 2008 Casa Gran del Siurana Priorat Cruor

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (7/2/2015)

Nice, moderately fresh plum and cherry fruit on this, despite its 15.5% ABV. very sweet, and a bit too much icing sugar for me, but quite a crowd pleaser.

  • 2009 Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero 92 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    (7/3/2015)

Charmingly accessible but also complex. Lots of juicy, fresh fruits of the forest, pine and a porcini savouriness. A bit of tomelo too. Good weight in the mouth but not heavy. Some muddy tannins leave their mark on the otherwise sweet and appealing finish. 14%
