I tasted all wines not blind.
Red fruits, some spices and barnyard in the bouquet. On the palate juicy red and dark berries, sweet spices, earthy and rustic flavors, medium acidity and pleasant, slightly sticky tannin. Elegant wine. Many in the group were not that enthusiastic and disliked the nose. I nevertheless scored it 89 – 90 Completely ready now and no real hurry.

Deep bouquet with dark berries, cherries, coffee and chocolate. On the palate ripe dark and red berries and cherries, some smoke, leather, herbs and spiciness, vanilla, some toast, red bell pepper, firm acidity and also firm, but round tannin. Enormously concentrated wine. Still in its early maturity stage. Until 2018+ if well stored, will be no problem.

Beautiful bouquet with red fruits, sweet spices, vanilla and showing some maturity. On the palate soft red fruits, some autumn impressions, good oak, a firm amount that typical Italian fresh acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Elegant wine with a good concentration. Early maturity now. Might score a bit higher with some more ageing. Around 2018 – 2020? 92 for tonight.

The bouquet is quite funky with minerals and overripe fruits. On the palate a bit reductive with red and dark fruits, metal, sweet licorice, spices, bell pepper and autumn impressions. Slightly sticky tannin. Don't know the history of this bottle, but the wine was a bit past its prime but still drinkable. No score.

Cab. Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah blend. Gets 8 months of French oak. In the bouquet ripe and sweet red and dark forest fruits. On the palate dark and red berries, sweet spices, some autumn impressions, beautiful acidity and round, pleasant tannin with still a soft bite. Very clean and harmonious wine; a great pleasure. Fully mature now, but no real hurry. The score might seem high, but considering the wines around it in this tasting, it really deserves it.

This wine is made of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2 % Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine doesn’t get any new oak. Beautiful bouquet with red and dark forest fruits, sweet spices, lavender, some tobacco and barnyard which blows off. On the palate a good concentration, dark and red forest fruits, some plums, tobacco, beautiful and juicy acidity and healthy, round tannin with a pleasant bite. Good bitterness in the finish. Day 1 an exciting wine. Day 2 it all had mellowed a bit and the wine was even more friendly and beautiful. Early maturity now and it will drink lovely over the next 4 - 5+ years.

A very special bled from South Africa: 52% Sangiovese, 17% Pinot Noir, 15% Nebbiolo, 8% Mourvedre, 6% Syrah and 2% Barbera. The bouquet is quite rustic with red fruits, toast, minerals, laurel, lavender and other flowers. On the palate quite special with minerals, toast and some chocolate. Mild acidity and soft tannin. Something really special and certainly not unpleasant, but nothing which reminds of Italy.

This wine is made of 90% Sangiovese and 10% of different, not specified, varietals. The wine gets 5 months of oak. In the bouquet dark and red forest fruits, a lot of blackberries to be more specific. Also some herbs and spices and in the beginning a bit rustic. On the palate red and dark berries as well. Some spiciness, a firm amount of good acidity, some vanilla and lush, round tannin with a firm bite. Full bodied and intense wine. Day 2 the wine was even more harmonious. Already offers pleasant drinking, but around 2020 I guess it will be even a greater pleasure. 91+

In the bouquet a bit perfumed with dark berries, chocolate, vanilla and coffee. On the palate a bit rustic with dark forest fruits, sweet spices, oak, good acidity and a bit grainy slightly drying tannin. Already approachable and lovely, but give it another 3 – 4+ years of cellaring. For today 91+

2001 Cafaggio Villa Cafaggio San Martino Toscana IGT 89 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
This is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wine nowadays gets 18 months of French oak; 50% new, 50% one year old. I don’t know how this was in 2001. In the bouquet a mature wine with red berries, herbs and spices and vanilla. On the palate mature with still some cherries, earth, herbs, autumn impressions, firm acidity and sticky, slightly drying tannin. Day 2 the tannin was even a bit more drying. Completely ready now and no hurry, but I don’t think the wine will improve. 89 for today.
