Introduction

As the season is rapidly drawing to a close, it was time to watch the Browns and hope for a game. After a dismal first half, it did not look that way, but a strong second half produced a game worth watching that was entertaining at least. We had a chance right down to the final second. The Detert was opened at kickoff. I decided to open something else at the half to change our luck. It seemed to help a bit,if not enough.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

I know this needs some time, but I had never had it, and wanted to see about buying more. It is quite good but needs air or time. The vineyard is surrounded by To Kalon and for years was part of the Mondavi blend. They are know mostly for the Cab Franc it seems but I started with the Cab Sauvignon. Purple in color. The nose has nice cassis, black cherries and slight leather notes. On the palate, cassis, burnt herbs and black cherry notes. With vigorous swirling, a sweeter, riper not emerges that definitely helps. It drinks slightly Bordeauxish before and clearly Californian after the swirling. This is certainly not a fruit bomb. Nice depth. Not as open as most 2012's. I would think it needs 3 to 5 years. If drinking now, give it a long decant IMO.

  • 2007 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 98 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Wow, was this bottle singing. Drunk alongside a Detert Cab, this was much more complex, as well as more ripe. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, black cherries, spices and slight violet notes. Wonderful, lush texture. On the palate, very deep but unwinds in the glass. Black raspberries, lavender and spice. Delicious. Long finish. Really impressive. No hurry, but so good now, worth checking in on.
