  • 2003 Moët & Chandon Champagne Grand Vintage 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    Bottle apparently not cellared under the best conditions. But luckily it turned out good!
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, gold colour. Legs. Weak bubbles.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of savoury nuts, salty minerality, toasted bread, citrus lemon. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12.5%), medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of toast, brioche, savoury nuts, salty minerality, citrus lemon curd. Long finish.
    Very good quality. One sip and I just kept going back to the glass for another. Lovely bouquet on the nose. Drink and enjoy.

  • 2009 Philippe Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées 89 Points

    Pop and poured. Drank over 2.5 hours.
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, yellow lemon colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of salty and flinty minerality. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of fatty citrus lemon, salty minerality, flinty minerality. Long finish.
    Good quality. The fruity citrus lemon takes centre-stage on the palate, and there may be fans of this fruity style. Not for me. Acidity could be better also. Drink over next 2+ years. Does not seem likely to improve much with further ageing.

    Pop and poured. Drank over 1 hour.
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, yellow gold colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of honey and citrus lemon. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of honey, citrus lemon, lemon peel, sweet peach. Medium+ finish.
    Good quality. Yes this is rather enjoyable on the palate, but the honey notes at such a young age have me worried. Not for further ageing for me. Drink up.

  • 1995 Mas de Daumas Gassac 91 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

    Poured into decanter and drank over 2 hours.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of sweet earth, cinnamon spice, blackberries, black cherries, dried blackcurrant, leather and hints of meaty animal. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (12.9%), fine integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, black cherries, dried blackcurrant, earth, cinnamon spice, leather and bits of meaty animal. Some herbaceousness with more air. Long finish.
    Very good quality. It really is quite Bordeaux-like at heart, with some other interesting stuff thrown in. Drink and enjoy now. It does feel like it could last another 5+ years well, if the cork holds up. Unfortunately, the cork on my bottle crumbled.
    Blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% mix of various varietals: Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Tannat, Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Grenache, Tempranillo, Voskehat (Armenia), Kontorni (Armenia), Salte (Syris) and some Georgian varieties.
    Day 2 tasting: Herbaceousness receded. Now chocolate, dark red cherries, spice, umami, soy sauce, earth. Still long finish. Holding up very well.

  • 2006 Château Troplong Mondot 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Drank from bottle over 2.5 hours.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose medium+ intensity, slight barnyard that blows off, revealing aromas of earth, sweet mint, licorice, slight vanillin, black and blue fruits. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of licorice, sweet spices, mint, earth, black cherries, blackberries, blackcurrant. Long finish. Harmonious and balanced.
    Very good quality. I was guessing this was a SuperTuscan Bordeaux blend. Drink and enjoy. Can still develop more over the next 5-8 years.
    Surprised that this is so ripe and nice in an off-vintage.
    90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
    Aged 16 months in 70% new oak barrels.

  • 2008 Château Pape Clément Les Cles de Clement V 91 Points

    Tasted blind. Pop an poured. Drank over 2.5 hours.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of blackcurrant and other ripe dark fruits. Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe blackcurrant, blackberries, graphite, lead, slight earth. Long finish.
    Very good quality. A Bordeaux second wine that is performing to the standard of a first. Lots of ripe fruitiness here. On retrospect, the palate is on the rather plain and simple side. Good effort nonetheless. Drink and enjoy over next 2-3 years.
    58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot.
