Introduction

supper with Charteris and Burn Cottage and the Hughenden. A sit down meal with a couple of Pinot's that, in the past, haven't impressed me that much despite other friends singing their praises highly. Still, it was a freebie and the boys from Wine Ark were there so off I toddled

Flight 1 - On arrival (1 Note)

Flight 2 - house made pork rillettes, piccalilli & grilled Brickfields sourdough (3 Notes)

with the rillettes by themselves the Burn Cottage was the best match but when the piccalilli waded in only the Chardonnay could stand up to it…

  • 2014 Charteris Riesling The Hunt Vineyard

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Slight gun smoke, struck flint, muted citrus, slightly reductive…in the mouth an initial citric tang with lime notes, it's bone dry and a little sharp. Meh.

  • 2014 Burn Cottage Riesling/Gruner Veltliner

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Peach, lime, floral top notes, also medicinal herbs…in the mouth apple and peach fruit, apple skin bitterness, mid-palate burr. Pleasant enough in a fruit driven way but in no way justifies the price tag of $94 AUD.

  • 2013 Charteris Chardonnay Astral

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Hullo old friend; toast, butter, stone fruit tending to lemon, touch of wild ferment funkiness…on the palate it's cool and broad, tangy. Structure and Malo notes dominate fruit a little bit too much for me but it's okay. Possibly a bit of time will sort things out?

Flight 3 - Roast breast and confit leg of duck, parsnip puree & blackberry jus (5 Notes)

The 2012 shines with the food

  • 2013 Charteris Pinot Noir Central Otago

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Earthy aromas, slight sour red currant, some stalks, little cream and sweet spice. Sweet cherry with time and the red currant ripens. In the mouth there is a slight burnt note, spice, warm - alcoholically - over cherry and a slight bitterness. Out of whack.

  • 2013 Charteris Pinot Noir The Winter Vineyard

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

muted cherries and cream, muted spice, strawberry and slight ash. Sour cherry, a little bitter but juicy. Hmm. Bit of alcohol warmth here for me too.

  • 2012 Charteris Pinot Noir The Winter Vineyard

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Pretty sweet red berry & cherry fruit, sweet spice, slight Oregon pinot noir note, controlled stalkiness. Cherry married to peppery spice, some mid-palate burring, quite long and, with time, quite pretty. Nice

  • 2014 Burn Cottage Pinot Noir Moonlight Race

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Cedar, perfumed, straying into the black fruit spectrum, spices, touches of 'that' pinot noir nose, cherries, very slight stalks. In the mouth the wine is dense, thick, again more in the black fruit spectrum with slight liquorice. Hmm. Time required?

  • 2014 Burn Cottage Pinot Noir Burn Cottage Vineyard

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Cedar, perfumed notes again, stalks, minor sandalwood over black fruit and an almost slightly sour note. In the mouth it's dense and thick with drying tannins over blackberry and spice. Hmm, again is time required?

Flight 4 - Cheese (1 Note)

I kept back a few wines to work against this as well…again the Charteris Winter 2012 was my personal favourite

Closing

Well, that was a pleasant enough supper. The Charteris Winter Vineyard 2012 was my WOTN. The burn cottage wines really don't excite me - that big, rambunctious style of pinot noir is not really my thing.
