  • 2012 Achával-Ferrer Quimera 85 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo

Inky purple in the glass, opaque. Earthy, brambly nose, with that weirdly green Malbec grapey chemical weedy thing. Not sure how to describe this, but it smells like Malbec. Also violets, sage, underbrush, and dried flowers.
Dry, full-bodied, with elevated alcohol 14.5%? (correct). Hints of new oak on the palate - baking spices - but holding it well. Elevated acid - it really sticks out, as if acidified. A harsh tartness on the finish. Moderate minus tannins. Some bitter chocolate and purple grape on the finish. I’m not a fan but it’s clearly ripe fruit. Persistent.
