Introduction

Just a great Sunday afternoon with 8 friends, each of us throwing 500€ in the bucket and in addition brought 2 bottles out of our own cellars.
We always tasted 2 wines against each other.

Davide Saitta provided his Restaurant for this amazing tasting and Toni Askitis, owner and chef-sommelier from D'Vine Restaurant was the best moderator
i have ever seen.

I'll never forget this great afternoon.

Thanks guys.

Flight 2 - The Whites (3 Notes)

Flight 3 - The Reds (12 Notes)

  • 2014 Gantenbein Pinot Noir 95 Points

    Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Graubünden, Fläsch

My first Gantenbein of my life - so far i was always thinking that this Label must be completly overrated and too pricey. I was wrong, this is really amazing although it is damn young and pretty closed. But it shows great potential and will even be better in the future. Great fresh pepper flavours, young cherries, cassis and some mint.

  • 1991 Gaja Barbaresco 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

A little disappointed here...it is way over its peak and has a weak structure. Drink up as soon as possible.

  • 1974 Château Cheval Blanc 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

The clear winner against the 1979 Pichon Longueville Comtesse. 1974 wasn't a great year but this one is very nice and still has some years to go. Cassis, ripe blueberries and fresh leather. Great structure and smooth tannins. Amazing to see how great producer can handle suboptimal years.

  • 1979 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

At first there was nothing interesting but after some time it developed nice raspberry, ripe blueberries and wet compost flavours - quite interesting and nice. Just let it breath for some time.

  • 1981 Château Mouton Rothschild 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very mature but still approachable with great notes of cassis, black pepper and dried leather. Drink up soon.

  • 1984 Château Lafite Rothschild 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Wow - i never expected this from a 1984 vintage. Bottle must have been stored under perfect conditions. It's a firework in the mout with great fresh red berry flavours and soft tannins. Great overall structure.

  • 1986 Château Latour Grand Vin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Still very closed and youthfull. Needs more time but great flavours of black currant, bleck pepper and anise - a lot of power. Will even be better in a few years.

  • 2001 Château Margaux 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

A lot of power and just in the beginning of its drinking window. Great and full body with a long finish and a meaty texture with notes of black currant and blueberries. Very nice!

  • 2011 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT 95 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

I don't like this wine - I LOVE IT! One of the best wines a had in the last few years. It is fat and bold but without being jammy or something like that. I love drinking young wines but i'm sure that it will get much better in the close future - try again in 5 years. Just superb!

Flight 4 - Bring Something That Nobody Has Drunken Before (8 Notes)

Closing

My favorite wine of the evening was the 1979 Prüm we had in the beginning - i could sip on this forever!
2nd place for the Masseto 11 - i know, it's quite young, but it showed it's potential and is full of power right now.
3rd place for the Chateau Margaux 01, which is in an amazing drinking condition right now.

Good luck and good night

Dennis
