We were showed the entire production of this small (13 Ha) and young producer located in Central Italy, at a medium altitude of 450 m.
The main features of this area are represented by a very high minerality, due to the kind of marine clay and sand soil; a very high thermal excursion, leading to a nice aromaticity of the wines . Alcohol level between 13 and 14° is another character.
Also if the aerea is vocated to the production od Verdicchio di Matelica, the producer showed also some nice red wines.
Three different styles: Alarico: steel only; Grappoli d'oro passing in part (20%) in second hand barrels and grapes are a bit lately harvested.
Archè is an experimental wine, avoiding chemical products in the vineyard, using organic natural ingredients.
Reds were a nice surprise, especially for the aged Onorio (same blend as the Bosco, but 70% of wine passing second hand barrels)
Contradictory signals coming from the tasting: the structured Verdicchio grappoli d'oro becoming better with a bit of ageing, while the base Alarico did not..
2015 Azienda Maraviglia Verdicchio di Matelica Alarico 82 Points
Italy, Marche, Verdicchio di Matelica
Brilliant light straw yellow.
Intense at nose: clearly mineral at first, almost hydrocarbons, then some herbs: Thymus and sage coming out. Agrumes.
Dry, alcoholic, good acidity and high minerality. Good body.
Alcohol at first, then following a strong persistent mineral note until the end. Fruit in sub-order; almond closing. Unbalanced but typical for the wine.
