Small glass, brief note. Very rich and extremely concentrated. Ripe apple with sweet spice and toasted walnut throughout. Very long, with almost Grand Cru concentration. Much better than a couple of bottles from a different source from a year+ ago.
Small glass, brief note. Apple and candied lemon peel with some floral support. Very good already for its level, with moderate weight and length, but excellent balance.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Rich apple and pear aromas with lots of floral charm. Same orchard fruit flavors supplemented with as much lemon. Excellent minerality and a harmonious balance that makes this almost seem weightless while clearly concentrated.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Black and red fruit come across as very ripe and concentrated, but a bit jammy and backward for right now. Nose particularly seemed closed. I wouldn't open until at least 2020, probably better 2025 or later.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Ripe fruit, fully mature already. Seemed to freshen up slightly after 10-15 minutes in glass, but I'd still think it time to drink up.
Small glass, brief note. Reductive start, particularly on palate. Lots of acid, comes across rather tart from middle to finish. Probably better with more cellar time or more air.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Slightly funky aromatic start, showing age. Fresher palate with very good concentration and plenty of stone fruit. Not the best bottle ever, but I still enjoy this wine a lot.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Slightly reductive start, which quickly dissipated. Cross-section of orchard fruit aromas and flavors with spice and floral notes throughout. Very concentrated, very long. Fantastic.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Ripe orchard fruit on nose and palate with faint mint and spice notes. Moderate weight and length. Slightly more mature than I expect from Ramonet at this age.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
I like that this is very concentrated, which helps balance the intense almost tropical ripeness, but this is also fully mature and has a slight petrol note.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Attention-grabbing floral start with apple, lemon and candied peel. Starts out ripe and slowly seems to transform into a lean, elegant powerhouse with chiseled minerality. Very long, very elegant. This kept changing so much in the 15 minutes I managed to keep this small pour in my glass that I can't say if I think this is a "93 point" or "97 point" wine, but know it is a wine I want to contemplate over a more extended period of time.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Great nose with floral, spice and mature apple nicely combined. Similar flavors, just slightly less exciting. Moderate weight and length. Better than the last bottle I tasted approx six years ago.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Rich and unctuous with some candied apple and a hint of overall sweetness. Good+ nose, VG+ palate. More youthful than I expected.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Open a couple of hours before serving, but not decanted. Controversial tonight, with some loving it and others not. I found it very concentrated and spicy but very backward. I continue to be a huge fan of this wine, but it needs another decade in the cellar or a few hours in a decanter.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Black fruit with mushroom, but somewhat tired. Moderate length and complexity. Much less exciting than another bottle from a year ago, which was actually from the same source.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. I didn't see bottle condition and don't know provenance. This was still alive but fully, fully mature and perhaps a little bit dirty.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Easily the highlight in an otherwise very disappointing 88/90/93/00 vertical. Ripe and mature combination of black and red fruit with lots of spice. Very balanced and charming. Most likely right around its peak drinking window, this should continue to drink well for a while, but I doubt will improve.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
In very disappointing 88/90/93/00 vertical. I brought this tonight and was incredibly disappointed. There was a peculiar celery salt aromas that never went away, and i couldn't get past. Flavors and structure were good, but frankly not what I expected from this great wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Red cherry aromas with good spice. Stems in great balance. Similar flavors also bring out some black cherry. Elegant with very good concentration, good length. Not quite as great as another bottle opened last year from the same case.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Very ripe combination of black and red fruit with more upfront power and less backend balance than I typically adore in Mugnier Musigny. Very enjoyable, but not great. Upside?
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Good density with both black and red fruit. Ripe but well balanced, but slightly less textural elegant than my favorite Freddy wines. No hurry to drink this soon.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Perfumed start with spice and floral notes combine with ripe fruit that is so unmistakably Leroy. More firm finish than I recall from last time opened a few years back, but this still has upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Black and powerful with great spice. While I liked this wine shortly after release, it often seemed to underperform my expectations for almost 15 years. That is all in the past. This is the 3rd or 4th excellent bottle in a row in the past two years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Good+ aromas, great flavors. All black fruit, roast meat, all nicely bright and fresh. Long finish, great balance. Very good now, drink by? 2045?
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. More black vs red fruit, all fully mature with great spice. VG concentration. Probably best to enjoy within the next decade.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Black and red cherry with spice notes and faint signs of earth. Lots of concentration, but also just perfect balance. This keeps getting better.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Ripe red and black cherry with moderate concentration, complexity and length. Wonderful balance. At its peak, but will drink well for another decade.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Meat and black fruit with great spice. Some faint hints of decay that didn't thrill me, but really threw off this wine for a few other people.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. At least as good as another bottle from two months ago. Bold and bright red fruit with so much concentration. A broad array of spices and fresh herbs. As long a finish as I can ever recall from a savory wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Tasty indeed, but simple and lighter styled, which is typically a good sign for most 2004s. Faintest of bitter hints on finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Served double blind. I thought this showed lots of red fruit with Asian five spice and very good density. All this took me to Vosne Grand Cru and its maturity level to approximately 1985-1990. Based on a recent bottle I opened, I thought perhaps Mongeard-Mugneret 1985 Grands-Echezeaux.
Small glass, late night, brief note. Bigger fruit vs the Blanc de Blancs and seemingly less emphasis on bread and yeast. Great balance and power, while nicely finessed.
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points
France, Champagne
Small glass, brief note. Lots of apple and Meyer lemon with toast and yeast, much like the same wine from earlier today.
