Introduction

I organized this Arcadian tasting because they are one of my favorite domestic producers. Sadly, the wines could have showed better. The Pinot noir's were particularly disappointing.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Arcadian Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Decanted 1 hour. This was was surprisingly vibrant with acidity. It also had a lemon, beeswax, minerality thing, with a small amount of oak. I like the balance here. I'm wondering if the higher acidity is due to decanting, which I didn't do for the previous 8 bottles I had.

  • 2010 Arcadian Chardonnay Clos Pepe Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Decanted 1 hour. This chardonnay had the same vibrant acidity as the 2008 Arcadian Sleepy Hollow. It had a little more golden fruit, and a little less complexity. The same lemon and beeswax persist on the finish.

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 2001 Arcadian Pinot Noir Fiddlestix Vineyard 87 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Decanted 2 hours - which was probably a mistake. This wine is quite complex and savory, with mushroom, oak spice and green herbs. Unfortunately, it also tastes rather elderly. The palate is a bit hollow and the mouthfeel seems fragile.

  • 2005 Arcadian Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Decanted 2 hours, which seemed right. Lean, elegant, great balance. Flowers, cranberries, spice and some musk.

  • 2006 Arcadian Pinot Noir Jill's Cuvée 87 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Decanted 1 hour. Cranberry, zippy acidity, and forest floor. This seemed a bit bitter and slightly angular. I didn't mind drinking this, but it wasn't very compelling.

  • 2009 Arcadian Pinot Noir Francesca's Cuvée 89 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Decanted 4 hours. Bright fruit that also manages to be somewhat dark. At this stage it seems heavily oaked, which is slightly enjoyable, but kind of unbalanced. The fruit was pretty and big. I liked this wine, but given the bottling and the price, this was a disappointment. (WINEGLAS : I would not mistake it for Aussie shiraz).

Flight 3 (5 Notes)

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Château Suduiraut 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Mostly sweet and fruity. A little spice and butterscotch, but not much. A good Sauternes for sure but I hope some complexity shows up with age.
