Introduction

41st Birthday tasting. We'd been trying to do this for awhile. Lots of fun had by everyone. Thanks to Roger and Cale for hosting.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2011 Antica Terra Pinot Noir Rosé Erratica 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Pnp. Tight on opening. Fleshed out after 45 minutes. I've had this wine three times over the last three years and this was the best showing. Absolutely delicious and glad I saved this for a few years.

  • 2005 Clos l'Église (Pomerol) Esprit de L'Église 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Pnp. Beautiful nose of dark red fruits and a little funk. Rich and fruity palate with well integrated tannins and acidity. Super delicious and fun to drink. I could smell this wine all day.

  • 1996 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia 95 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Drank over two hours. Honey, hazelnuts and dried flowers. Loads of acidity in this still. Finish hoes on for 1 minute plus. A pleasure to drink. This would be a great wine to drink with rich seafood or cream sauce. I would drink this wine with food now or wait another 5 years to drink.

  • 1976 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia 95 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

PNP. Drank.over two hours. Very tart and almost sour at first. Really started showing well after 45 minutes. Funky barnyard nose. Rich roasted fruit, orange peel, figs, dried herbs. I was pleasantly surprised how well this held up. Was still drinking great at two hours. So much fun to drink!

  • 2008 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Decanted for one hour. Aromas explode out if the glass. Flowers, tobacco, dried herbs, cherry liquor. Just an amazing wine. So well balanced. My first experience with the Rayas reserve and I understand the hype.

  • 2007 Peter Michael Les Pavots 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

Decanted for one hour. Big rich wine with some oak still showing through. Saved a glass for day two and this still never came together. It was fun to see where it was at, but I won't open my other bottles for at least five years. Sure hope there's a pot of gold at the end because this was not worth the tarrif or the patience...

Closing

Rayas and the Bosconia were the highlights. Les pavots was pretty disappointing. Let's do it again soon!
