An epic night at the center of the Burgundy universe. This probably captures 90-95% of what I was poured at the Gala Dinner and Post Party. The generosity and love of Burgundy at the Gala is something to behold.
1985 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill
France, Champagne
Kick off to the La Paulee gala dinner. Gorgeous aged Champagne here. Broad and expansive palate with mature baked apple and loads of yeasty toast. A fine bead and still energetic.

2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Domaine
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
From Jero. Big toasty, smokey nose with rich orchard fruit and minerals. Great richness and sweetness while quite fresh and lively. More smoke with a medley of fruit - peach, pear, apple, white cherry, in the finish. 94-96

2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
A wow experience (one of many tonight). This is a mouthful of big, rich, dense orchard nd stone fruit. With epic amounts of concentration. Just seems so young and needing time in the cellar or time/attention in the glass over a few hours. Alas, tonight isn't the night to ponder a single wine over several hours. Serious upside from here.

2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 98 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
From magnum, and tasted immediately after the '10 Lafon Montrachet. I actually preferred this by a margin right now. This has the stuffing of the Montrachet but shows more expressive and precise today. Amazing depth and richness, with terrific focus. Crazy good.

2001 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Pretty classic Raveneau here with dense, chewy, smokey orchard fruit. Concentrated with plenty of taut acids providing lift and minerality. Terrific.

2009 Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
From magnum poured by Erwan. The nose has dense, rich orchard fruit with a well-integrated matchstick note. Rich, concentrated and chewy on the palate. Well integrated toast, some hazelnut, and plenty of minerality. Dense, delicious, finish.

2008 Hubert Lamy Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
This was tighter and less expressive than some wines before it. Good rich fruit with lots of concentration. Just less nuanced and generous right now.

2011 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis Œil de Perdrix 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
Quite the curveball at the La Paulee Gala dinner amongst our Grand Cru white starters, but this was a real treat. Quite a substantial Rose with good power and freshness. Would love to revisit on a sunny summer day.

2005 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or 99 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
A seriously stunning wine with massive proportion but amazing energy and brightness. Awesome concentration with decadently sweet and round fruit, while still tense and taut from acidity. This is liquid gold.

2009 Pierre Morey Bâtard-Montrachet 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Good richness and density, but this was a bit compact and closed in.

1989 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Rich and luscious fruit with so much youthful freshness for a nearly 30 year old white burg. Maturing white fruit flavors and spice throughout. Delicious.

1991 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Huge nose with layers of black cherry with earth/tar notes and loads of spice. This packed with almost creamy, round fruit with intense spice notes. Big flavor crescendo in the finish.

1973 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche 92 Points

The aromas here are ethereal with aged black fruit and smoked meat. Lighter on the palate but quite elegant with a silky, airy feel.

2007 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Aromatics have some earth and funk. Extremely elegant, smooth and ethereal palate. A wine that commands focus to appreciate it ... and that wasn't the case at Paulee.

2003 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg 96 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
An epic nose of rich, leathery black cherry. Wow, so much rich, concentrated black cherry that is laced throughout with baking spice. Not at all hot or roasted. Likely the best '03 Burg I've tasted.

2000 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg 98 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Preferred this to the '03 & '13 served side-by-side. Packed with so much earthy, leathery black cherry with intense smoke and spice throughout. Rich yet still velvety.

2013 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Kind of a shame to drink this one so young, especially in the same flight as the '03 and '00, you can see how unevolved and primary this '13 is in comparison. Great density and concentration but lacking the roundness and layering of the older wines. 93+ in the future.

Stunning nose that goes on an on. Red cherries, florals and earth. Long, ethereal on the palate. Another wine that requires attention, and didn't get it on this night.

1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 99 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
This is logic defyingly youthful with an exuberant black cherry, earth and spice. Significantly more bright and fresh than the '88 tasted side by side. A wow palate with rich youthful powerful fruit with intense layers of spice. Big, sexy finish.

2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Yeah, no green meanies here. Next to the nearly perfect 90 and terrific 88, this was a bit of a step down. Bright black cherry and spice nose. Good roundness and lovely balance on the palate. Strong Vosne spice in the finish.

1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 100 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
I can't imagine a more complete wine. Even in the Paulee format, this wine has a gravitational pull that got my full attention for a few minutes. Sensational and striking amounts of Vosne spice throughout. Velvety, powerful black cherry. Goes on and on.

2000 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
Tasted around the same time as the 96 and 01 LT. This was good but not at the level of those two wines. Great cherry and spice, just not as dramatically intense. Still a pretty special wine.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
From magnum. Very impressive nose of plums, black cherry, florals and earth tones. Very good concentration and finessed tannin. Shows fairly young. Not at all out of place with the elite CdN Grand Crus.

Another wine where the adjectives just won't provide justice. Sensational and striking nose with intense spice, sweet red and black cherry. Aromas are endless. The palate is so rich and creamy yet lithe. More intense, persistent spice and smoke notes throughout. Wow.

1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 98 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
A wow nose with so much spice, smoke and incense layered into mature cherry and clay. The palate is rich and nearly creamy, which is hard to believe for a 30+ year old wine. Lifted and precise into a long finish.
