  Medium yellow. Lime and brine. Middle weight, some feel, good acidity but lacking intensity.

  Light green. Pungent iodine nose. Green citrus, very earthy base. Brothy and longer than the Petit Chablis. A step up.

• 2016 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

  Medium yellow. Oyster and soil aromas. Light and delicate. Fine, lemony flavors, mouthwatering acidity. Adequate intensity through the mid-palate, but then the finish really picks up and explodes. Excellent and one of my favorites amongst the Premier Crus today.

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

  Light yellow. Riper and less seashore notes than the Vaillons. Rounder, more amplitude. Twist of orange, moderate acidity, terrific feel (especially for unoaked Chablis). This is sort of the converse of the Vaillons insofar as the grip and intensity fall off toward the end.

  Yellow/greenish. Lots of orange and fragrant floral tones. On the lighter side but excellent mouth coverage, stony base, medium acidity. The finish is bursting with lime and soil. Very good.

  Light green-this looks like young Chablis! Quite floral. Delicate, bright citrus, substantial acidity. Saline and long. This could develop into another excellent wine with a few years.

• 2016 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

  Medium yellow. The most forward and complex aromatics with beautiful mixed citrus. Riper, weightier, rounder than any of the others with more glycerine and soil throughout. Even a bit of vanilla that could fool you into thinking that the wine had seen some wood. A cut above the rest as it seems most complete although not a wine for extended aging. Really excellent length.

The good news? All of the wines possessed true Chablis character with citrus, salinity, soil, and at least decent acidity all showing up. Yet, they were pretty tightly clustered in the quality range of very good to excellent, a bit difficult to differentiate, short on the intensity and snap, and lacked the great sugar/acid balance of a year such as 2014. Verdict? Good but hardly great, probably a realistic result given the challenges of the vintage.
