Introduction

Larry Stone hosted a tasting of the 2016 Lingua Franca vineyard wines for mailing list members at La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels in New York.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2016 Lingua Franca Chardonnay Bunker Hill 94 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Apple and lemon nose. Flinty, lemony flavors. Mineral texture. Light bodied and low alcohol. Tremendous lift at the end. The Bunker Hill is such a joy to drink at this point that there is no need to age.

  • 2016 Lingua Franca Chardonnay Sisters Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

A nose of lemon confit. Feels very precise on the palate with lemon-lime flavors. Light bodied. Good length on the finish. This is likely to improve with another 2-3 years of aging.

  • 2016 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir Estate 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

A perfumed nose of lavender and black fruits. At this point, the wine reminds me most of the Rhys Alpine Vineyard with its dark and brooding nose. The 2016 Lingua Franca Estate is much lighter on its feet though. Lengthy finish. Great things are coming for this wine but you are going to need at least another 4-6 years.

  • 2016 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir The Plow 94 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Perfumed nose from red fruits, bacon, and spices. Soft and round on the palate. Finishes strong with firm tannins on a long finish. Unsure of its age worthiness, but Plow could not be drinking any better today. Bravo!

  • 2016 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir Hope Well Vineyard 89 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

The 2016 Hope Well is shutdown at the moment with little of note on nose. 40% whole clusters (and you can taste it). Green and stemy. There is a nice lift at the end with a long finish. I want to love this more because it has such solid underlying material, but I have my doubts it will ever come together.

  • 2016 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir Mimi's Mind 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Subdued nose that opened up with a little air. Juicy red fruits. Tremendous structure backed by grainy tannins that will need time to resolve. Wine of the night for most of the group (and Larry Stone’s favorite). There is a ton of potential here, but this needs 5-10 years in the cellar to come into its own.
